it fucks me up that tolkien only died in 1973. dude has the vibe of a victorian scholar who wrote all his manuscripts by candlelight but then you look him up and realise that he knew what color tv was. what the fuck.

I submit to you that the most iconic feature of any animal is either unlikely or impossible to fossilize.
If all we had of wolves were their bones we would never guess that they howl.
If all we had of elephants were fossils with no living related species, we might infer some kind of proboscis but we’d never come up with those ears.
If all we had of chickens were bones, we wouldn’t know about their combs and wattles, or that roosters crow.
We wouldn’t know that lions have manes, or that zebras have stripes, or that peacocks have trains, that howler monkeys yell, that cats purr, that deer shed the velvet from their antlers, that caterpillars become butterflies, that spiders make webs, that chickadees say their name, that Canada geese are assholes, that orangutans are ginger, that dolphins echolocate, or that squid even existed.
My point here is that we don’t know anything about dinosaurs. If we saw one we would not recognize it. As my evidence I submit the above, along with the fact that it took us two centuries to realize they’d been all around us the whole time.

Meet the Mona Lisa of the Prado, the earliest known copy of Da Vinci’s best portrait. Similarity in the undersketch of the painting indicates that this was very likely painted concurrently with the original Mona Lisa, by a student of Da Vinci.
There is much controversy in the art world over the question of whether or not to clean the fragile Mona Lisa, but her sister has been restored and some fairly odd later alterations removed to show the original vibrant colors and lighting. Some details, such as the sheerness of her shawl and the pattern on the neckline of her dress, have become utterly obscured in the original, but in the restored copy they’re perfectly clear.
It blows my mind a little bit to look at these two sisters side-by-side and imagine how much vivid detail could be hiding in the Mona Lisa under 500 years of rotten varnish.

Star Swirl the Bearded in my MLP Exileverse AU! She (yes she) was teacher to Celestia and Luna, eventually leading them to revolt against their tyrannical father. Eccentric but kind, she once possessed the Element of Magic.
Star Swirl was always leagues above her peers in terms of intelligence and magical prowess, but a magical experiment with a new spell in her youth went awry and she was paralyzed from the neck down. Nevertheless, she continued to study magic, eventually being hired by the Storm King to tutor his daughters, Luna and Celestia.
Never one to hide her true feelings, she taught the sisters about the Storm King’s tyranny and soon, the sisters began to plot with their teacher for a way to overthrow him.
It was Star Swirl who aided the sisters in creating a spell that detected those who would be able to help them best: the Loudest of Laughter, the most Selfless of Generosity, the Truest of Honesty, the most Steadfast of Loyalty, and the Greatest of Kindness. Together, they brought harmony to the land—but not before Star Swirl sealed them and their Elements away in order to restrain the Storm King.
Until someone or something breaks the seal…
based a lot of her design on Beldaruit from WHA because I love him🤭! I thought the idea of a magically-charged mobility aid was really cool.
