African Wonder Woman
I saw these kids, 2 sisters, having a play fight. While striking their favorite Power Ranger poses, one of them declared:
“You can’t touch me! I have super powers!!”
“What super powers?” Asked the other.
“I’m Wonder Woman!!
Unfazed, the other replied:
“Well…I’m an AFRICAN Wonder Woman so you can’t beat me!”
I was Floored. Never in my life had I seen such a powerful assertion, spoken so matter of factly, from a child no less. To see such pride taken in her people, to see African-ness wielded like a weapon superior to any Superman, Batman or Wonderwoman cemented within me our responsibility to teach our children a profound love and reverence for our culture, for African-ness. What also resonated with me was this child’s understanding that this reverence for our culture serves as a power source to strengthen us and is key in our fight for liberation. She understood that African-ness is something to be revered as well as weaponized and used to fuel out struggle. She understood that African-ness is a super power and she is our African Wonderwoman. Kudos to their parents because these babies are a shining example of a conscious subversion of the white supremacist ideals our children are bombarded with the moment they enter the world. This is what we need to foster in our children, an unshakeable pride in their skin. It starts in the household. Ofcourse, before we can nurture it in our children, we have to nurture it in ourselves. African-ess is a grounding, self-affirming energy to imbue within our selves and a weapon to wield against our oppressors. Its a reminder of our African, radical tradition of struggle and perseverance. It’s an evocation of the enduring strength of our ancestors, an inextinguishable spirit that burns within us today. We all have this superpower; we just need to activate it.

A second thing people might not know about me is that seeing this Ruth Orkin series in my college years really moved me.  I have always loved being around children and observing how they interact.  It is not so different from watching animals in their natural habitats.  I am a firm believer that what you felt and which games you pursued in your childhood, makes us the people we are today.

💛🐝 ways to help the bees! 🐝💛
Tumblr media
hello, all~!
I just wanted to share a few things you can do to help our little friends! bees are so important, and they need our love. 💛
🏠build a bee hotel🏠
Tumblr media
you can use recycled materials you have on hand to create them. ( hollowed bamboo sticks, toilet paper rolls, planks of wood, etc. ) it’s also a good craft for the kiddos. get creative & have fun with it!~
hang your bee hotel on a tree, or a high up spot where nothing can disturb it.
💧make a watering station💧
Tumblr media
it’s super duper easy to do, and all you need is a shallow dish and some pretty stones! bees get thirsty, and you’ll be helping them out. especially when it gets real hot out!
🌱plant flowers and herbs🌱
Tumblr media
not only is gardening fun & therapeutic for you, but the bees appreciate it too. also, you can use the flowers & herbs grown for your craft! bonus!!
here are just a few of their favorite plants:
basil
mint/catmint
rosemary
sage
yarrow
lavender
sunflowers
poppies
asters
zinnias
salvias
marigolds
cosmos
…and there’s waaay more! garden to your heart’s content, and watch the magic happen~
🚫don’t use pesticides or harmful chemicals on your lawn or garden🚫
Tumblr media
this one is pretty self explanatory. if you want a safe environment for your bee friends, try not to use any harsh chemicals on your plants. if you have issues with destructive bugs, use organic methods to shoo the pests away.
here are a few organic alternatives to using pesticide!:
eggshells
hot peppers
tumeric
banana and orange peels
here’s a great site if you’d like to read more about it!:

✨sponsor a hive✨
Tumblr media
last but not least, help out & sponsor a hive! this helps beekeepers, helps teach others about bees, and so much more!
here’s a site if you’re interested and would like to read up on it.:

thank you all for reading! let’s do our best to help these precious babies.
with love,
🐝💛
