The resilient Exhibition Industry takes a stand.
Tumblr media
The resilient Exhibition Industry takes a stand. In the wake of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) resulting in a series of trade show cancellations worldwide, UFI, the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, and SISO, The Society of Independent Show Organizers, have launched a new campaign, “This Show Is Open”. With the intention to support exhibition and event organizers around the world, this campaign has been launched. As the exhibition and event organizers put the industry’s full experience to the task of keeping events going wherever possible, UFI ad SISO stands firmly with them. All exhibitions and events are being held in line with the guidance of health authorities and the interests of their customers.
Tumblr media
Exhibitions and events are especially important in times of disruption. We stand to fulfill our obligation to maintain opportunities for people to meet wherever possible Greg Topalian, SISO Chair He added, “As part of the exhibitions industry, we are committed to keep our exhibitions and events going around the world wherever we can do so." The campaign launches as the global outbreak of COVID-19 is challenging societies around the world. As health systems and governments deal with the outbreak, exhibitions and events globally are being postponed or canceled where deemed necessary. Exhibitions and events are one of the core elements of the industries and economies. They are both among the most responsive and resilient economical tools.
Tumblr media
Exhibitions and events are essential to millions of businesses around the world. They exist to provide platforms for people and industries to meet, to trade, and to collaborate - Mary Larkin, UFI President The “This Show is Open” campaign consists of material that UFI and SISO are making available to their respective memberships – covering all the global leading companies in exhibition management as well as regional and national heavyweights. They can add the visuals and text material to their ongoing communications around upcoming exhibitions – highlighting the fact that, while numerous exhibitions around the world are being postponed or canceled due to CIVID19, many shows are taking place successfully around the world. Canceling Exhibitions and Events due to Coronavirus, 'Damaging Recovery' - UFI & SISO
Tumblr media
Joint UFI/SISO statement on the Coronavirus and the global exhibitions and events industry A statement was issued by the joint Spokesperson for both the associations in light of the current crisis in the industry due to the spread of Coronavirus. The statement in verbatim: Around the world, societies and businesses are dealing with the consequences of the current outbreak of COVID-19. Our sympathies lie with everyone dealing with symptoms of this new type of virus, and we wish them a speedy recovery. We are sorry for the loss in families where individuals have died from the virus. At the same time, we are encouraged to see that ever more people are reportedly leaving hospitals in China again, having overcome the infection, and are leaving quarantine in China and elsewhere. Health concerns have to come first in times like this, and successful health support is embedded into the functions of economies. We are all well-advised to keep this fact in mind. As societies as well as businesses, we will overcome this outbreak more easily if we stay rational and focused. As leaders of the exhibitions and events industry, we strive to do just that. This is why we support our colleagues in China, where venues are closed to contain the outbreak, in any suitable way we can. And this is why we keep exhibitions and events going around the world, implementing advice from global health authorities like the World Health Organisation as well as the national and local authorities. Based on their assessments, canceling exhibitions in Europe, in the Americas, in the Middle East and in major parts of Asia is currently premature. Clear guidance is given on health measures before, during, and after events take place. Canceling exhibitions right now actually damages the path to recovery after this outbreak, and it inflicts additional harm: Exhibitions and events are essential to millions of businesses around the world. Taking them away will cause severe economic impacts to these customers and regions. It is every company’s decision whether or not they wish to exhibit at events right now, and we call on the organisers of events to be accommodating to companies who decide not to exhibit just now. But it is just as well every company’s decision to come to the show floor, to seek to meet with industry peers, to drive the exchange about how and to what degree their respective industries are impacted by COVID-19, and to secure the successful future for their businesses. We stand with them, and with their communities. Jointly, we will overcome this outbreak. And then, we will do our part to support the exhibition industry in China and beyond as they bounce back from this difficult time.

Story of Exhibition Stall Builders
Tumblr media
Story of Exhibition Stall Builders Author: Mr. Aanand Kharbanda, an industry stalwart with experience of more than 30 years. An Exhibition plays a vital role in boosting the economy. An Exhibition is attended by all the key players, thus making it an ideal platform for a company to exhibit. In a span of 2 – 3 days one can assess competition, meet suppliers and strike a deal with prospective buyers. It is a delight to be in an industry that caters to the ever-expanding Exhibition Industry. An Exhibition Stall Builder is an unseen force working behind the scenes in the Exhibition Industry. It has been a privilege to get an opportunity to work with the finest and most ingenious group of people. We can create mesmerizingly beautiful and jaw-droppingly complicated structures in a matter of days. It is our creation which makes the Exhibitions appear impressive and noteworthy. The business of Stall Building is very exciting and innovative but it is fraught with many vices. Lack of Understanding
Tumblr media
Clients and the General public are confused about what we do! As an industry, I believe we have been lacking in conveying to our clients and other stakeholders, WHAT WE DO! I have met many clients who would say – ‘Wall hi to khari karni hai’! Many clients will come up with last-minute demands at the venue and expect them to be fulfilled. As they say, there are good and bad in every field. You will find good and informed clients, who will have a structured approach to their requirements. They treat us as their partners and not as mere service providers. But, More often than not we encounter clients that do not treat Exhibition Stall Builders as their partners. They are more prone to equate our fraternity with Carpenters! With this mindset, we cannot expect to see any DIGNITY OF LABOUR in our industry. All of us who have executed projects abroad are aware of the difference in the professionalism of Clients as well as Stall Builders. We should strive to achieve an equilibrium between Professionalism and our set ways of working. Lack of Entry Barrier
Tumblr media
Exhibition Stall Builders Community has an open door policy! We welcome all! Anyone can enter the industry and flourish. It is a very open Industry and is always on the lookout for young and fresh talent. Exhibition Stall Builder seems to be a very easy job profile. In reality, it is just the opposite and requires a great deal of expertise to run a successful business in this field. Since it is not a Capital dependent business there are many young boys and girls who test the waters from time to time. What these youngsters do not understand is that it requires a level of commitment and standing to cater to the varied needs of the client. To stay on the business one also requires an appetite for loss and a certain degree of risk-taking. Competition, is healthy is good for the industry but in order to book orders, these Fly-by-Night operators give an unrealistic price for a stall. They incur losses and spoil the market price as well. We also face the issue of over-smart / dishonest employees that try to run their own side business by stealing our clients! The customer also falls prey to cheap rates given by them and in the end suffers from poor execution issues. Work Schedule of Exhibition Stall Builders
Tumblr media
Hard Work is the bed-rock of Success Exhibition Stall Builders hire the most hard-working professionals one can find. Exhibition Stall Builder needs to work round the clock to meet the deadline. The organisers of exhibitions have adopted international standards of safety and working conditions. The same needs to percolate down to the Exhibition Stall Builders as well. In the course of adopting international standards what went missing is the need to provide adequate time for execution the task of Stall Fabrication. To meet the deadline, we usually get 48 hours. It is sometimes too little a time and the work-force needs to work non-stop. This brings the response time of workers and makes them prone to mistakes and accidents. We should strive as a community to regulate the working hours. This will ensure better work standards and in turn, provide better work quality. Swatch Bharat – A Reality far away! Even after a massive push given to the Swachh Bharat Mission by the government, some of the venues have yet to catch up. Pragati Maidan of the past had some major issues in this regard. The washrooms in the halls were always closed during setup days. The washrooms outside the halls, that were kept open, were not very hygienic and used to be locked after 8:00 pm. I hope that the new avatar of Pragati Maidan has taken cognizance of these issues. Relatively newer venues like IEML have ready infrastructure to cater to such needs. The Way Forward

Collaboration between EXHIBITION STALL BUILDER, ORGANISER and VENUE OWNERS is need of the hour! This industry has given me everything and now I see my future in giving back to the industry and society at large. To better the existing awesome industry we should strive for the following: 1. A better understanding, among clients, of what we do and how important it is! 2. Reasonable price with justified profits. Stop underquoting! 3. Reference check before hiring Employees. Weed out the dishonest. 4. The dignity of Labour. Better working conditions for employees and labor. 5. Insist on Hygienic working conditions at venues. Talk to Organisers and Venue owners. 6. Sensitize the Hall managers and Security staff towards the dignity of the Exhibition Stall Builder. This is my first attempt in penning my thoughts, will look forward to constructive criticism and comments. Sourced from our associate portal: www.buildmystall.com Read the full article

Pope Francis says “exhibitions showcase the beauty of culture”
Tumblr media
Pope Francis says “exhibitions showcase the beauty of culture” Pope Francis spoke to delegates from UFI’s CEO Summit in Rome, saying that tradefairs can “showcase to the wider world the rich diversity and beauty of local cultures.” The Pope invited the one hundred delegates of the event to a private audience in the Sala Clementina inside the Vatican. He stressed that their work “should promote inclusion, care for our common home, and the integral development of individuals and peoples.” He added: “Exhibitions that help the local economy, engage its labour force, give value and prominence to its culture and reverently respect its human and natural ecology will ultimately be more successful and memorable. They will have an impact and appeal both locally and worldwide.” UFI presented His Holiness with a sapling of an olive tree – a symbol of the passion for peaceful dialogue and sustainable development created through exhibitions and events. UFI President Mary Larkin (President of Diversified Communications, USA), led the delegation into the meeting with Pope Frances I. She said: “It is a great honour and privilege for us that Pope Frances invited us to this exchange. Often, in our everyday work life, we focus very much on delivering the next event. Today carried a powerful message that the social and cultural dimension of our work deserves just as much attention.” Read the full article

WEE AFFAIRS speaks to Mr. Sunil More, Chief Promoter - FairAct, President - IESA
Tumblr media
WEE speaks to Mr. Sunil More, Chief Promoter - FairAct, President - IESA It is our honor to bring to our readers the very 1st interview of 2020 with Mr. More, President IESA. WEE AFFAIRS Spoke to Mr. Sunil More on a wide spectrum of topics. The interview will give you an insight into the personal and professional life of this very experienced and ever learning Grand Master of the Exhibition & Conference industry. It will also inform you about the path taken by IESA, under his leadership as President. Read on to get to know, THE PERSON, THE LEADER, and his views on Industry & Economy. THE PERSON WEE: Tell our readers about yourself, what drives you, what are your hobbies, what excites you as a person? SM: The first question itself is a rather difficult one! Though nowadays it is a common practice to speak about oneself, I am rather a misfit! I am not sure if others agree to this, but I can say that I am a modest, down to earth, humble person! What drives me most? Well, the announcement of an event and subsequent preparations for the same are presently the most important activities of my business life. I have a number of hobbies. Some unfulfilled and some unusual. The top of unfulfilled hobbies is painting followed by enjoying peaceful evenings at my ancestral village home. The unusual hobbies include collecting figurines from different parts of the world of which I have a collection of more than 100 from about 50 countries where I have traveled during the past two decades. I am also a collector of coins and matchboxes! WEE: That's interesting! Do give the readers a little peek into your family life as well. SM: I am married to Mrs. Anagha, who is a homemaker. We have a son, Nikhil, who lives in the US with his wife, Kiran. THE LEADER WEE: Tell our readers a little bit about your journey into the field of Exhibitions, Conferences, and Events. SM: An electrical engineering graduate with post-graduation in management, I have landed accidentally in the Exhibitions and Conferences field. After a stint as an engineer in an electrical manufacturing industry for 7 years, I joined an association representing electrical manufacturers. Apart from the usual Association work like resolving member queries, representing to the Government, etc., we started organizing technical conferences on various electrical subjects in the year 1980 followed by organizing our maiden exhibition of electrical equipment, where I was associated in various capacities since 1980 finally heading the Event since 1996 till I retire from the services of the Association in the year 2012. The exhibition grew from 250 companies and 12,500 sqm of gross area in 1990 to 900 exhibitors and 90,000 sqm of gross exhibition area in 2012. Today, it is even bigger than in 2012! Having gained experience in handling operations of such a large event apart from conferences, we three partners started our own company, FairAct (FairAct Exhibitions and Events LLP) extending exhibition management services to exhibition organizers across India. FairAct today is proud to be associated with a large number of events organized by industry Associations as well as exhibition organizers. WEE: How did FAIRACT EXHIBITIONS & EVENTS LLP come into existence? SM: As mentioned above, we felt there was a need for a company that could provide operational support to the Organisers and hence, FAirAct was born. WEE: Do share a few achievements of FAIR ACT EXHIBITIONS & EVENTS LLP with our readers. SM: Today, FairAct offers turnkey solutions as well as management consultancy to a number of exhibition organizers. We are associated with very large exhibitions like ITME India, PLASTIVISION and bcINDIA apart from working with organizations like Indian Dental Association, Nurnberg Messe, FIEO, EEPC, etc. The unique feature of our short existence of 7 years is that almost all of our clients give us the opportunity of working with them, event after event. Our Chennai Chapter is the most enthusiastic and progressive amongst all over regions having taken lead in organizing its own local exhibition and now a Conclave. - Mr. Sunil More, President IESA WEE: How did your association with IESA start and how has your journey been so far? SM: Having worked in an Association for more than 30 years, I understand the need for a common forum for the industry to collectively express its issues and difficulties as also to help each other in promoting individual’s businesses. So, FairAct was amongst the first few companies to join IESA formed to further the interests of the industry. The journey with IESA has been satisfactory so far and we at FairAct look forward to more initiatives from IESA for promoting the industry. WEE: IESA, recently celebrated the completion of 5 years of its existence. Please share the key milestones in this short but eventful journey of IESA. SM: IESA is still in its nascent stage of existence and is learning to improve its services and grow further. In this short span of 5 years, IESA has grown to a membership of 350 with an immediate target to reach 500 members. The annual Show, Exhibition Expo Shop is a successful exhibition of the industry where players meet in one place to explore business possibilities. We are also working on safety standards - a guide, which is expected to be released shortly. WEE: Give us a brief overview of the work done by IESA for the Service Provider Fraternity. SM: As explained above, bringing members on one platform is a major activity. We have now 5 regions, where regular meetings are held to discuss industry problems and also help each other for their requirements. WEE: Do you see a change in perception in the minds of organizers towards the Service Industry? SM: 5 years is not sufficient time to change perceptions as the first 2/3 years were spent in consolidating the Association and its activities. We are now gearing up to having a structured dialogue to help each other.

WEE: Is the Indian Service Industry at par with the Global counterparts? SM: I am afraid, though Indian Service Industry follows a lot of good business practices, certain constraints do hamper reaching global standards. The constraints are both internal as well as external. While external constraints include working environment, time availability, lowest bidder strategies, unskilled workforce, etc., internal constraints include mindset issues, ignorance of safety norms, undercutting. Globally, the Organisers follow certain standards, which are adhered to religiously, whereas, in India, many deviations take place knowingly or unknowingly. I must add here that some progressive exhibition organizers have started specifying safety norms for service providers while working on sites. WEE: What, according to you, are the 5 key aspects that the Service Industry needs to work on? SM: I feel our Industry must look seriously at the safety of equipment and workforce, training manpower, standard terms of conditions – both commercial and operational, improving business dialogue amongst member companies and benchmarking itself with best business practices followed world over. WEE: Are there any programs that IESA is currently running to impart and improve the knowledge and information of the people working in the Services Industry? SM: We have carried out some programs for educating the people working in our industry. These include taxation programs, safety guidelines, etc. However, a structured program has not been developed so far. WEE: IESA organizes the INDIA EXPO SHOP every year. How would you describe the response of the visitors and the enthusiasm of the participants? SM: We will be organizing the 5th INDIA EXPO SHOP this year. The exhibition has certainly helped vendors of our industry to touch-base with their clients so as to improve their business prospects. We plan to make the Expo more inclusive to help all participants and have some ideas which are presently under discussion stage. WEE: Recently EEMA & IESA, CHENNAI CHAPTER, organized the EVENTS TODAY CONCLAVE 2019 for the first time. How was the experience and tell us a little about the thought behind the concept? SM: Our Chennai Chapter is the most enthusiastic and progressive amongst all over regions having taken lead in organizing its own local exhibition and now a Conclave. The Conclave was a success with a lot of ‘Take Home Value’ to it. Participants at the Conclave, not only learnt from experts but also from the fellow members who shared their ideas and experiences.

WEE: Safety of the workers and visitors to any Exhibition, Conference or Event is paramount. Is IESA conducting any training programs for the safety issues? SM: Yes. The subject of Safety is on top of the IESA Agenda. We have already worked on safety norms for our industry and are in a final stage publishing a booklet containing ‘Guidelines’ while working on the site. We have conducted training porgrammes on fire safety in the past. WEE: Do elaborate a little on the collaborations with International Associations and the benefits received. SM: The benefits can be manifold. We can learn from each others’ experiences, better business practices, the new and innovative ideas being implemented by them and so on. The list can be unending! WEE: Please elaborate on the CSR initiatives taken up by IESA. SM: IESA has taken up CSR initiatives during the past 3 years. We organized blood donation camps in Mumbai and New Delhi; collected funds for the Kerala flood victims and helped an NGO working for the upliftment of the Tribals living in remote areas about 100 kms from Mumbai. We intend to continue these efforts in the future too. THE ECONOMY WEE: What is the current market size of the Exhibitions, Conference, and Events Service Industry and where do you see it in the next 5 years? SM: It is estimated that the Indian Exhibition industry size is estimated at Rs 65,000 crore with over 700 major exhibitions taking place every year and we are experiencing a growth of between 10 and 12% year on year from now on. WEE: $ 5 Billion target and the contribution of the Exhibitions, Conference and Events Service Industry. Please share your thoughts on the matter. SM: We believe that the exhibition industry creates a big impact on the economy. It boosts trade and motivates innovation. It is a driver for sectoral growth and has a great impact on travel, tourism, hotel reservations, etc. It helps in generating revenue for the Government through taxes and levies. Finally, it helps our own industry to grow and prosper. WEE: What do you think is stopping the Exhibitions, Conference and Events Service Industry getting a formal ‘INDUSTRY’ recognition from the Government? SM: I must say that as an Industry, we have not been successful in convincing the Government about the benefits it brings on the table. It is necessary for us to explain to the Government in one voice with substantial reliable data for the Government to consider our request for Industry Status. WEE: What support do you think this industry needs from the Government? SM: Development of infrastructure, simplification of procedures and processes, incentivizing the industry for its effort are amongst the few initiatives the Government can take to support the industry.
