Dev had well and truly destroyed his sleep schedule. He wasnât surprised by any measure- he could sleep nearly any time he wanted, and he often did want. But life had always kept him on some sort of schedule, with school or work. Now he had responsibilities as a camper, but his brother was using every spare second to nap, and it was difficult to turn him down. So for once, Dev wasnât that tired. He was strolling through camp, enjoying the cool air and dim light from the cabin.
He didnât have much in the way of night vision. He also wasnât expecting anyone huddled under a shadowy tree. So when the person rustled the grass suddenly he jumped, and then froze. Reminding himself that monsters couldnât get inside (and that he could knock out just about anything), he inched closer. He whispered softly, âYou havenât got any shoes on.â
The Khione cabin wasnât the best place to wake up from a nightmare. Cold and empty, desolate to the pair of blue eyes that examined each corner out of a preconceived notion of terror. Kole scrambled out of his bed and barely had the presence of mind to grab his hoodie before he bolted, shoes forgotten forlornly next to the door.
He needed out of the cabin, away from the silence that just made everything so much more painful. He paid little attention to the surroundings until he tripped and sprawled in the dirt. He gave up then and pushed himself up just enough to scoot against the tree, burying his face in his knees and caring little for who might see him.
@Dev

Sunny blushed, shuffling, would it be weird to appologze another time? she wondered if he wanted that. maybe she should just drop it. she honestly had no idea what to do in this situtation. darn homeschool and lack of social skills.
âI⌠uh⌠sorry okay hi dev.â she mushed about 3 different responses into one, hoping he would just pick whichever fit best and continue.
âItâs fine. Be more careful next time,â he said not unkindly, suddenly feeling deja vu for the countless times heâd told his brother the same thing. He scratched his head and looked around, more awake now.
âI should probably get going. Maybe Iâll grab lunch... what time even is it?â

Navin moved to shimmy away from Dev but he still wasnât used to having the size of the cabin beds and in a rather ungraceful moment, he fell off the bed. With a solid oof he hit the ground face first still tangled up in his sheets.Â
âOkay, okay, Iâm up!â He declared as he shot up, voice still a little mushy from drowsiness but it was a start. Disoriented and a little confused at his sudden drop, he gave Dev a squinty-eyed look that was more general tiredness and annoyance than anything else. âWhat time is it? I swore I didnât sleep late enough to warrant this.â He huffed but even though he complained, he would never do anything to prevent his brother from eating, especially in a place where food was never-ending. There was a childish pout on his features and his face was still trapped in the laxness of sleep but hey, he was awake right?
Dev jumped when Navin tumbled to the floor, wincing. He inched closer, running an anxious hand through his hair. âAre you okay? Iâm sorry. Did you hurt yourself?â
Seeing from the pout that he clearly wasnât fatally injured, Dev glanced at his watch and said, âItâs one in the afternoon. Which might not be âlate enoughâ for you, but some of us like to provide ourselves sustenance,â he said, hypocritically, as heâd only woken up about half an hour earlier himself. âIâm starving to death. Seriously. Just wasting away. Iâm afraid if I donât magic myself a heaping plate of vege nachos in the next ten minutes, I might just disappear entirely.âÂ

she blushed, and looked down, before saying âI was just trying to helpâŚâ she said, scooting back. âIâm sorry i called you dirty. and old. and grabbed your neck. it was probably super scary, huh? i wouldnt want to get woke up like that.â
holding out a hand, she said âIâm sunny.â
âWell, yeah, for one, it was scary,â Dev said, shaking his head. His expression was a little amused, but mostly exasperated. âBut seriously. Do you have any idea how dangerous that was? I can knock people unconscious with my brain and I wouldnât have done that.â
He shook her tiny hand. âIâm Dev.â

âMothers are like that.â He missed his mother with a fierceness that hadnât dulled much, even nearly ten years later. His mother had been a wonderful woman, and he didnât even have a picture of her anymore. It upset him a little, so he refused to acknowledge it.
Theios looked at the other camper and laughed softly, having no intention of stopping him. âYouâre welcome.â He hesitated after and then just gave a small smile. âI wouldnât want to bother the two of you.â He really wouldnât. That was 95% of the reason he hadnât yet gone to bother Jamie about the nightmares. Until he literally couldnât function on his own, he was going to pretend that he was fine.
âNo, please, do bother us,â Dev said, pausing for a moment. He shook his head and grinned. âWe donât do hardly anything. Way too much sleeping. Youâd be doing us a favour.â
As if on cue, he yawned again. He walked away with a, âAnyway. Check in sometime. Iâll see you later, Theios!â

It was tough work getting Navin up. He didnât always use his magic to put himself to sleep- it was a struggle for him to stay awake at all, so it wasnât necessary. The trickiest part was waking up Navin without losing him to purposeful sleep. Because that meant thereâd be no waking him up, save leaving for a couple days. Dev sighed down at his twin as he grumbled.
âCome on, brother. Iâm hungry.â Sometimes the trick was to bug him until he gave in- other times he wanted to be gently coaxed awake. Dev personally felt like it was more of a âpoke until he bruisesâ kind of day. He found a vaguely shoulder shaped lump and gave him a few shoves. âCome with me!â
@wedreamofgodzzz
Navin gave a very discontented grunt as he felt his brother shake him. He knew it was late and he knew he should be getting up but the bed was just so warm. Instead of responding to the shaking, he burrowed further into the sheets to escape the chilly temperature of the cabin. He wasnât getting up and that was final. Yes, he could just knock himself out again but that was kinda hard when he was actively being moved around. He uttered something into a pillow and while the first part was unintentionally muffled, the second part came out loud enough to be heard: ââŚâm getting up later.â

Navin gave a light shrug and a couldnât quite meet Devâs eyes, as if somehow the bad dreams were his fault, as if he should have had better control over what runs through his mind in the night time. âYou did, you did, believe me, but itâs all a bit much,â Navin said, his tone reassuring if only a little sad at the edges.
Still, a small smile spreads across his features. He doesnât want to make his brother worry. Heâll get over this with time and then itâll all go back to normal, right? âNo, they arenât. Iâm too tall, theyâd be going for my ankles at that point. Donât worry, Dev, Iâve done pretty well so far!â Itâs an attempt to lighten the mood and Navin canât help but chuckle at his brotherâs protectiveness. Not that he minded though. There were times where it had either saved his butt or got him out of situations that he hadnât wanted to be in in the first place. âHere, come on, letâs go eat. Iâm sure Iâll feel better once I got a full stomach to think with.â Shaking his head and grinning as Dev tousled his hair, he reached out and pulled his brother into a warm hug. It had been a long day and the familiar gestures that they had done since they were kids eased his mind. It was nice to have an oasis in this strange desert of people.
âYeah, I get that,â Dev murmured with a nod. The whole situation was a bit much. Being the son of a god that heâd never met and only gave him powers concerning sleep? That was easy to deal with. Hell, even meeting other demigods would have been doable. But shoving all these kids and young adults together, facing monsters, training, being away from home and mom... Dev didnât like the change. But he knew that he and Navin would do just fine. âIt hasnât been easy for me either. But weâll get through, as we always do. And weâll talk about it later.â
He pulled his brother against him tightly, grinning at the rush of power that came from contact with the other half of his godly gift. He was also just plain happy- glad to see his brother after his short time away. Dev pulled away and started them walking again.
âYeah, letâs go. Iâll cook you up something special- just like mama used to make,â Dev said, laughing at himself already as they walked and bumped shoulder. âWith my mind.â

Navin gave a sheepish grin as he remembered just how little he had been conscious for that time. âMan, I donât know how you dealt with me. At least when you sleep like the dead, you eat like them too.âÂ
âYeah, thatâd be nice!â He nodded happily as he was pulled in. âOh, you know, the usual.â Itâs a vague statement but itâs the best thing to describe what was happening. You see, the problem was that while some people were so stressed they couldnât sleep, Navin had the exact opposite problem: his stress followed him into his dreams. It tainted and warped them at the edges, not quite enough to destroy the peacefulness of sleep but just enough to leave a bitter taste in his mouth when he woke up. Normally, the stress only came before tests or exams or even the occasional date he had managed to land but recently, it had come creeping back with a vengeance. Usually, the presence of his brother alleviated it but now, it still lingered even when he was close to Dev. The separation from his mother, from his old lifestyle, into a world filled with unfamiliar people and unfamiliar powers was too much for him. On top of that, there was the whole deal with his deadbeat father that he had to accept (which he wasnât going to, the old man could suck it) and it was all pilling up. His train of thought must show on his face because he has to tell himself to relax the frown that had fallen onto his lip. âItâs just, you know how it is sometimes. Letâs focus on the food and getting some meat on us.â
Devâs face fell a little. He retracted his arm and let Navin stand to full height again, giving him a little push. He stared at his brother for a long moment, and then muttered, âI tried to leave you with positive dreams. Did they not stay?â
Dream manipulation was tricky. He didnât have the ability to change their exact content- he couldnât even tell what they were about. But he was pretty good at guessing the general mood, and he could influence them on a very basic positive-to-negative scale. Usually just sharing a bed, as they always had, was enough to give Navin pleasant dreams. Using his powers was a gift for Navin more than anything. But sometimes the particularly nasty ones broke through his influence if he left. He ran his fingers through his unruly hair as he thought.
Then he cracked a small smile, ruffled Navinâs unruly hair, and said, âHey, are those satyr boys picking on you? Donât lie to me, Iâll kick their furry asses.â

Theios gave a crooked smile. His Greek heritage had that effect sometimes and it was always nice to see, as opposed to people questioning why he hadnât died young. Well, younger. He still might die young. âThatâs interesting.â He wondered how she had managed to balance her faith. It really was interesting. Heâd never considered demigods whoâd grown up with different faiths handled this. Personally, heâd never had a use for religion after his motherâs death and even now, he really only believed because he had proof. âShe must be quite strong- to keep her own faith when presented with proof of another.â He admired her for it, despite having never met her.
He laughed. âThanks?â That was the first time heâd been wished such a thing, but as far as wishes went, it wasnât bad, he supposed. âI wish you luck on yourâŚnapping? Iâd offer to teach you how to sleep in trees, but mattresses are comfier, so.â
âShe is very strong. My mother is my hero,â Dev said genuinely, smile proud. And it was true- where his brother sometimes seemed to love her blindly just on the reason of being amazing, Dev often spent his waking moments thinking about how much he appreciated just how much she had done for them.
He grinned at him and nodded, inching in the direction of his cabin. âThank you, Theios. If you ever need me, come by Hypnos. Iâll probably be there napping with Navin.â

âYeah, Iâve had it done to me once or twice. Itâs not so bad until you realize they used magic to keep it there longer than usual.â Blue had multiple experiences when he was new, but when he threatened not to bake cookies for the Hermes cabin, they stopped. âThey think itâs funny, find it amusing. Or probably just to make fun of you, really. Do they ever really need a reason, though?â
Dev nodded solemnly. He and his brother had been the target of bullies for more reason than one- but he didnât think the guys who ran camp would consider putting a whole crowd of godly cousins to sleep a reasonable way to avoid getting dicks doodled on his face.
âThey donât sound like the kindest group of people. Maybe Iâll go against past advice and steer clear of those guys... theyâd just want to use my powers for evil,â he joked softly. He gestured at his dish and asked, âWhere are you going?â

âListen, itâs my fault I need to sleep so long to look this good.â He teases but thereâs a familiar twinge of irritation at the mention of their father. Itâs quickly replaced by sheepish grin as he thinks about his mom. âMan, I still feel bad that took up the couch so much. You remember when I used to just pass out as soon as I got home and it got really bad when I went through that growth spurt? Donât get me wrong, I like being tall but I donât know if the 18 hours of sleep I was getting was worth it.â While he hadnât minded sleeping, he knows it had affected his family more than they had cared to admit and in the summer of his sophomore year, the strain of his growing body had placed him in an almost comatose state. He had basically transformed into a portable heater, unnecessary in summer, and generally just a very tall and lanky nuisance. After that, he had made an effort to go out more, be more diligent with his jobs, to stay awake more. He had even had plans to fully repay back his mother before they came here.Â
At the chance to talk about his mom and especially food, he perked up, âI would love a second lunch. And, once weâre full we can ask around for those, what was it, drachmas? Itâll be simple. Sheâll be so happy to see weâre doing okay.â Previous sleepiness temporarily banished, he looked down at his brother expectantly, ready to head off as soon as he was ready.Â
âPfft, Iâd say itâs the other way around. All that sleep looked glorious. As much as mom hated you wearing out the springs on our craigslist couches, I think the sleep was worth having to grow so much.â Dev was just as tall as Navin, but he hadnât hibernated his entire sixteenth year of life to get there. Sure, heâd probably eaten an even more enormous pile of food every day than Navin had because of it, but that meant he could work. Bless their motherâs heart, she was as understanding as she could be about Navinâs sleep. With a narcoleptic diagnosis and her love affair with a god of sleep, she could hardly blame her son for it. So Maya and Dev worked double shifts, and they sent Navin out the door for as long as he could physically stand. And they survived.
âMaybe weâll find someone there that could trade us one. And explain how it even works,â Dev grinned, struggling to his feet. He started walking towards the mess hall, tossed an arm over Navinâs shoulders, and put him in the closest thing to a headlock one could achieve without using any force or having a height advantage. âHave any sweet dreams, brother?â

âNot a bother at all! Itâs better than being outside, after all.â She smiles reassuringly. âOr I could let you sleep and put a blanket over you? I dont like to use violence.â
âYouâre already much too kind to me, Miss Crystal,â Dev grinned. He would have liked to say the understanding reminded him of his mother, but even she had a limited patience concerning his and Navinâs naps. She was concerned when they were young, but by the time theyâd fully developed their powers, Dev was used to being woken by a magazine swatted at his hip (his brother didnât get the same treatment, but that was only because it would have no affect on him half the time).
Dev ran a hand through his hair and said, âBut I think this is an offer too good to refuse.â

âYou best should know that falling asleep in public will end up disastrous because the Hermes kids will get you.â Blue pointed out immediately when he saw the camper looking like he was about to fall asleep. The son of Hebe was on his way to the Big House, bringing cookies for both Chiron and Mr. D. But they could definitely wait if it meant avoiding any disaster that included these campers. âYou might end up with a dick drawn on your face.â
Dev shook himself awake, clearing his throat roughly. He blinked up at the stranger, and nodded. He rubbed the sleep from his eyes and gave him a small smile. âThanks for the advice. Wouldnât be the worst thing thatâs been done to me while I slept. Or drawn on me.â
He ran a hand through his hair and struggled to his feet. âHermes kids... why are they such fans of phallic symbols? I thought that god was... Priapus? One of the few I managed to memorize in middle school.â

He probably forgot to tell his boyfriend where he was again at this time, but Ian was a good seeker⌠but so was Noah as a hider. Looking at his brother, he shrugged. âWill you shut up? Iâm going to sleep. We can talk in my dreams if you can catch up.â
âDamn, alright,â Dev mumbled, settling back against the tree. He let his eyelids fall again, and shoved his hands deep into his pockets. He was entirely ready to drift off when he peeked out one eye and asked, âCan you do that? I donât do that.â

Navin grinned back at her. He didnât bother trying to hide how lovely that sounded. âThatâs very nice of you to offer, Crystal. Are you sure I wouldnât be a bother?â
He rubbed at an eye and shook himself. âBut if I go, you have to promise to hit me if I nod off. No holds barred. One free attack.â
âOh, I get it.â She smiles at the sorta explanation of his sleep schedule. âItâs fine, hon. I donât want you out here all by your lonesome. But we can go to my cabin? I have a comfy couch and leftover Halloween candy.â

Theios looked at him and shrugged. âI know a lot of them. Most than most people outside this camp, I suspect.â He flicked his eyes up towards the sky hidden by the leaves and back. âIâm Greek, and my mother believed in the old gods. The Greek gods. She made sure I learned about them inside and out before I even learned arithmetic.â He chuckled softly. âI think I knew the names of the Olympians before I could even spell my own name.â
He nodded after. âFeel free. I live in the Nyx cabin.â He did wander around a lot, but he at least checked in and attempted to sleep every night, so he wasnât really that hard to find. He shifted after, exhaling. It wasnât a bad offer. He could feel himself running ragged, but at this point, he was a little afraid of what heâd see in his dreams. Devâs offer was nice, but Theios wasnât exactly sure that he believed that the other camper could stop his nightmares. He hadnât really believed Jamie could, either. âMaybe Iâll take you up on that after dark. But I make no promises about not sleeping in trees. They can be quite nice, and Iâve never fallen out of one due to falling asleep.â
âOh, thatâs really cool, man,â Dev nodded, enthusiastic by his standards. âThatâs awesome. My mom has her own gods- youâd probably guess. It was weird growing up as a demigod with a Hindu mother. She was taught it was the only way, the original religion with no founders to find fault in... but the only godly proof she had was- my brother and I.â He shook his head. âAnyway. It got pretty deep. She taught us about her religion, but she told us not to anger the gods that gave us life.â
Running a hand through his hair, he yawned. âThatâs fair. I wish you luck on... not falling out of trees.â
