MDZS transmigration matchmaking game

imagine the following: one day, your soul/consciousness is transmigrated into the world of MDZS exactly 1 week after the death of jin guangyao at the guanyin temple. you will inhabit the body of one character for 5 years; during this time, your objective is to get two specific characters together for at least 1 year.

spin the above wheel thrice.

the result of your first spin is the character whose body your soul has been transmigrated into. you will have full access to all of this character's abilities. until you depart, this character's consciousness will be dormant.

the results of your next two spins are the two characters you must successfully matchmake, in a romantic sense. in order for your matchmaking to be considered successful, the two characters involved must consciously and mutually decide to begin a romantic relationship together, and subsequently stay together for at least 1 year.

for repeats:

if, across 3 spins, you only get 2 unique characters (ie. meaning that 1 of the characters was repeated), then that means that you yourself, in the body of the first character you got, must get together with the second character you got for at least 1 year.

if, across 3 spins, you only get 1 unique character (ie. meaning that you got the same character 3 times), then spin the wheel until you get another character. then follow the above bullet point about getting 2 unique characters.

at the end of your 5 years, your soul will be returned to your original body in the real world, in which no time has passed at all; the consciousness of the character whose body you inhabited will regain full control of their body.

if you successfully matchmade your two assigned characters, then you will receive your local currency's equivalent of 5 million dollars, tax-free. if you did not successfully matchmake your two assigned characters as explained above, then you get nothing.

concerning pre-existing relationships:

if you are assigned to matchmake characters A and B, but A and B are already in a relationship, then all you have to do in order to succeed is ensure A and B stay together for at least 1 year.

if you are assigned to matchmake characters A and B, but A and another character C are already in a relationship, then all of the following count as successes:

breaking up A and C, and then getting A and B together, and then ensuring A and B stay together for at least 1 year.

adding B to the relationship between A and C as a third, and getting this arrangement to last for at least 1 year.

having A simultaneously date C and B, whether through consensual polyamory or through cheating, and getting this arrangement to last for at least 1 year.

wei wuxian likes jiang cheng. wei wuxian likes jiang cheng a lot. one day, in what can only be called a pure failure of impulse control, wei wuxian kisses jiang cheng. however, jiang cheng only stares at him dumbly and does not even respond, so wei wuxian quickly plays it off as a joke.

afterwards, wei wuxian does not try to kiss jiang cheng again. in fact, the two just never bring it up. this is the correct response, wei wuxian tells himself. jiang cheng is the heir to lotus pier; wei wuxian is only the son of a servant. it is jiang cheng's duty to forever and always put yunmeng jiang first, above everything else. above wei wuxian.

however, wei wuxian's feelings do not change.

the cloud recesses lectures begin. jiang cheng is befriended by nie huaisang, who enjoys teasing him and pulling oversized reactions out of him. wei wuxian does not like this. to take his mind off matters, wei wuxian starts entertaining himself by bothering lan wangji. a small part of wei wuxian wonders if jiang cheng will get jealous; however, as far as wei wuxian can tell, jiang cheng is fully occupied by his new friendship with nie huaisang.

events proceed as they do in canon: wei wuxian's expulsion, the burning of the cloud recesses, the wen indoctrination camp. when wei wuxian hears that jiang cheng shortened a 10-day-minimum round trip to just 7 days just to save him, wei wuxian is incredibly happy.

lotus pier falls. wei wuxian is horrified; this is all his fault. thus, when yu ziyuan and jiang fengmian entreat him to protect jiang cheng, wei wuxian promises to do so. he does not need them to tell him to do so.

jiang cheng strangles wei wuxian. jiang cheng blames wei wuxian. this is deserved. however, some small part of wei wuxian cannot help but start to resent jiang cheng - when you say that your family is now gone, that doesn't include me, does it?

wei wuxian tells jiang cheng to stay put while wei wuxian goes out to buy food. when wei wuxian returns, jiang cheng is gone. in this moment, the first thing wei wuxian thinks is: of course. he went back for the bodies. in the end, yu ziyuan was right. he will always put everything jiang and everything actually tied to him above me.

wei wuxian gives his golden core to jiang cheng. this is natural, the least he can do to repay his debt. and yet, some part of him cannot help but say: the only reason why i have to lose everything, why i have to suffer for 3 days straight, is because you left me.

wei wuxian is thrown into the burial mounds. wei wuxian survives, pioneers demonic cultivation, and returns. wei wuxian is reunited with jiang cheng. together, the two of them torture wen chao and wen zhuliu to death.

jiang cheng is warm, but wei wuxian is cold. and who's fault is it that wei wuxian is cold? jiang cheng wants wei wuxian to carry his sword. wei wuxian cannot carry his sword. wei wuxian cannot explain to jiang cheng why he cannot carry his sword? why? because he doesn't want the truth to come out. why? because the truth would make jiang cheng sad?

or because jiang cheng will put yunmeng jiang above wei wuxian? because, right now wei wuxian's demonic cultivation is useful no matter how much it hurts, so wei wuxian can stay - but if jiang cheng finds out the truth, then jiang cheng will have reason to throw wei wuxian away, once the demonic cultivation is no longer needed?

the war ends. wei wuxian's demonic cultivation turns from a strategic asset to a political liability: everywhere, people criticize yunmeng jiang for allowing his heterodox cultivation to continue. surely jiang cheng will throw wei wuxian away now, put yunmeng jiang above wei wuxian. after all, he did so once already. and yet, even when wei wuxian cannot explain his inactivity, jiang cheng allows wei wuxian to stay.

wei wuxian meets wen qing. wei wuxian must protect the wen remnants; his debt to them is infinite. surely, jiang cheng will understand. surely, jiang cheng will choose him.

jiang cheng chooses yunmeng jiang. wei wuxian and jiang cheng part ways.

wei wuxian's stab wound hurts. the burial mounds are loud. the burial mounds are painful. the burial mounds are scary. wei wuxian is here again, stuck taking care of a group of people to whom he is irreversibly beholden, because of jiang cheng. if only jiang cheng had chosen to protect them. if only jiang cheng had chosen to protect him. if only jiang cheng had not went back for the bodies all those years ago, then this debt would not exist and wei wuxian would not be here.

jiang cheng and jiang yanli visit wei wuxian. so they have not forgotten him after all. wei wuxian is happy to see them, happy to hear of his shijie's coming marriage, happy to joke around with jiang cheng again, even though the stab wound he got from jiang cheng still has not healed.

wei wuxian is invited to jin ling's one-month celebration.

wei wuxian kills jin zixuan. it was an accident. then, wen qing and wen ning are turning themselves in. then, wen qing and wen ning are dead. then, everyone is calling for wei wuxian's blood at nightless city.

wei wuxian looks down and sees that jiang cheng is there.

the dead rise and begin to kill. wei wuxian doesn't care anymore; as far as he is concerned, all these ungrateful pieces of shit can just go die.

then shijie is dead.

wei wuxian gets back to the burial mounds, somehow. someone is passing him qi, telling him that he has to live, telling him that they love him. wei wuxian looks up. this person is not jiang cheng. of course this person is not jiang cheng. wei wuxian all but killed shijie; jiang cheng will never forgive him now. wei wuxian tells this person to fuck off.

the burial mounds are cold. now wei wuxian is alone. everyone he tried to protect is gone, either dead already or marked for death. all of his ideals have turned to ash, all of his righteousness has dissolved to nothing. wei wuxian is distantly aware that there are some other surviving wens, mainly because they keep trying to talk to him about something having to do with releasing the wards around the burial mounds so they can escape, but wei wuxian doesn't care anymore.

because, really, whose fault is it that everything went to shit? whose fault is it that everyone wei wuxian tried to protect is now dead? whose fault is it that shijie is dead, that jin zixuan is dead, that over 1000 people died at nightless city - whose fault is it that wen ning went berserk? whose fault is it that wei wuxian was forced to use demonic cultivation? does he think that wei wuxian likes demonic cultivation? that wei wuxian ditched his sword just for the sake of it? that wei wuxian left the well-lit path, went down the single-plank bridge into the darkness, suffered the entire world calling him a heretic and a monster, and now has the entire world baying for his blood - what, just because he could? as if wei wuxian could stop whenever he wanted to, return to the righteous path with his golden core blazing - as if this is all some choice, as if wei wuxian doesn't owe the wen remnants anything, as if wen ning and wen qing never helped wei wuxian give him a golden core again? as if he hadn't gotten himself captured, thus ensuring wei wuxian's eternal debt to wen qing and wen ning? as if he hadn't gone back for the fucking bodies? as if he hadn't taken wei wuxian's golden core?

if it weren't for him, none of this would have happened.

of course, he and his forces show up to end wei wuxian. it is too late to release the wards around the burial mounds to allow the surviving wen remnants to escape safely, so it looks like he will get to kill everyone wei wuxian had tried to protect today. perhaps some small part of wei wuxian had wished to see a different face, a stranger's face, leading the army at his doorstep, but by now wei wuxian knows it is foolish to expect anything else of him.

wei wuxian looks into his eyes. he hates wei wuxian; wei wuxian can tell. and yet, when it comes time for his sword to bear down upon wei wuxian, he hesitates.

too late for him. for the past three months, wei wuxian had done everything he could to dismantle the yin tiger tally; now, the backlash from this has already built up within wei wuxian's body to an irreversible degree. now, wei wuxian feels this backlash tearing him apart. in his last moments, wei wuxian laughs, looks into his eyes, and says - "if only i had never met you."

there are many attempts to summon wei wuxian's soul. many of them come from him. but wei wuxian knows that, if he returns, he'll only be facing those cold ungrateful eyes again. so wei wuxian ignores all these summons.

wei wuxian is resurrected! wei wuxian immediately stumbles into a mystery, involving a severed arm, a handful of lan juniors, and lan wangji.

initially, wei wuxian considers not going with them. but then the rumors reach him: sect leader jiang, for the last 13 years, hunting down every single demonic cultivator he could find. sect leader jiang, torturing and killing all of these suspected demonic cultivators, just for the slim chance of killing wei wuxian again - just like he did at the siege of the burial mounds 13 years ago.

wei wuxian goes with lan wangji.

lan wangji is nice. lan wangji is fun to talk to. lan wangji doesn't get upset with wei wuxian or blame him unfairly or act ungrateful to wei wuxian's contributions or ask wei wuxian uncomfortable questions that wei wuxian cannot answer. when wei wuxian provokes lan wangji, lan wangji just accepts it. wei wuxian has never directly harmed lan wangji in the past. wei wuxian gets the feeling that, no matter what he does, lan wangji will always forgive him.

so wei wuxian goes with lan wangji.

the truth of the golden core is revealed, thanks to wen ning. at the guanyin temple, that man has the temerity to cry and demand wei wuxian explain why. wei wuxian thinks with some disgust that he cannot count all the times he has wiped this man's tears already. it is a good question, though - why had he given this man his golden core?

there is, of course, a blatant truth. yet wei wuxian does not wish to acknowledge this blatant truth. even thinking about it humiliates him, hurts him - after all, what is the use of love if it is only returned with ingratitude, disloyalty, and finally hatred? what is the use of loving someone who has never once put him first? what is the use of loving someone who - despite wei wuxian begging him not to leave, despite wei wuxian having just promised jiang fengmian and yu ziyuan to protect him - went back for a pair of dead bodies, and in doing so abandoned wei wuxian and forced him to give up everything?

so wei wuxian gives the one answer he can bear to say, the one answer he can speak without resentment. it was my duty to the jiang. let's leave it all in the past.

jin guangyao is killed. wei wuxian returns to the cloud recesses with lan wangji.

no one in the cloud recesses really likes wei wuxian, aside from a handful of juniors, but that's okay. lan wangji likes wei wuxian. lan wangji will forgive wei wuxian for anything. lan wangji will never blame wei wuxian for anything, so it's okay. never once does that man try to communicate anything with wei wuxian, but that's okay too.

and then, one day, a conversation with lan wangji. a quirk of chance, a fluke, really. lan wangji reveals in passing that he fully believes that wei wuxian was framed for the murder of jin zixuan. either that wei wuxian was not even at qiongqi pass, or that someone else seized control of wen ning from wei wuxian and forced wen ning to kill jin zixuan.

why do you think this? asks wei wuxian. in response, lan wangji says that he knows this to be true because he knows that wei wuxian is a good person. that wei wuxian loved his shijie and would not do anything to bring her pain. that, no matter what the rest of the world says, lan wangji has full faith in wei wuxian's moral character - therefore, he can assert with full confidence that wei wuxian did not actually kill jin zixuan.

wei wuxian did in fact kill jin zixuan. suddenly, the fact that lan wangji will never blame wei wuxian for anything becomes much less tolerable.

wei wuxian leaves the cloud recesses.

wei wuxian wanders around for a while, living the life of a rogue cultivator. he had always romanticized this life, after hearing stories about his parents, but somehow the reality is different. perhaps it is because he has no one to travel with him. perhaps it is because he remembers what it is like to call a place home.

wei wuxian visits lotus pier. or rather, wei wuxian tries to visit lotus pier. that man's irritating second-in-command does not let wei wuxian into the compound. but wei wuxian knows at this point to expect as much, so he leaves without fuss.

bored, wei wuxian searches the nearby area for anything he can hunt. and then the rumors reach him: a nest of incubi. sect leader jiang, who had gone with a party of jiang disciples to take care of the problem. all of the jiang disciples had returned just barely alive, and had disappeared into lotus pier. sect leader jiang had not returned.

wei wuxian hunts down the nest of incubi. inside, he finds that man. all of the incubi are dead save one, which currently holds that man, who is heavily injured, in its thrall.

the surviving incubus has transformed itself into a carbon copy of wei wuxian.

as wei wuxian watches, stunned, that man - jiang cheng - reaches out his hand to stroke the incubus's face. "a-xian, i didn't go back for the bodies back then," says jiang cheng, blood bubbling between his lips. "you were just down the street and there was a wen patrol heading towards you. they would have seen you. so i ran out from my hiding spot and lured them away."
