Many many many people pointed it out already, but the fact that posts like these about Musk seig heil-ing get almost 100k notes in 2 days while any other post about the rise of antisemitism and/or antisemitic incidents and attacks barely breaks the jumblr ceiling is very telling about tumblr's virtue signaling.

I think a lot of Americans have a hard time grasping the idea of Jewish indigeneity because they dont know where their own ancestors came from. Maybe they'll have vague ideas like German, Italian, or Irish, but what they know has very little bearing on their day-to-day lives. They don't dress any different, they don't speak the language their great grandparents spoke, they don't hold regular ceremonies and rituals that harken back to the old days.

The idea of an ethnic group maintaining a constant identity over thousands of years is patently absurd to them. "You're telling me you're still mourning something the ancient Romans did? That's ridiculous! Clearly you've fallen for modern Israeli propaganda, otherwise you're deliberately arguing in bad faith in order to justify land theft and genocide!"

It's very frustrating, because when I say these things I do not say them in bad faith. My friend once said "it's a very American thing not to understand large timescales", and I think she was right on the money. The process of American assimilation has cut peoples ties to their ancestors to such a degree that they can no longer comprehend a continuous identity spanning millennia.

So I'm going to say this in the clearest language I can:

There is a genuine, historically provable, continuous connection from ancient Israelites to modern Jews. By the laws and customs of those ancient Israelites I am one of them. Let me reiterate. I am an Israelite, a hebrew, like from the Bible, and the fact that my identity has been so mythologized and talked about as if it's a thing of the past will never change that.

It shouldn't be surprising at this point but the virtue signalling bullshit surrounding Neil Gaiman is already getting fucking old. Yes, he's a deplorable, despicable, genuinely evil person and he deserves every single bit of what's coming to him and worse. Yes, people will have to re-examine their relationships with his work, which has perhaps impacted them or their personhood on a personal level. Yes, these opinions can coexist.

I know that on the holier-than-thou hellsite it's really easy to post something to the effect of "if you ever cared about Neil Gaiman or his work you're a piece of shit and need to immediately denounce it and also apologize a million times to internet strangers so we can deem you morally worthy of being seen as a good person." I get it. but there are people who have connected to this art on a deep emotional level for literal decades, who had no clue the person creating these stories that made them feel safe and understood was actually a perpetrator of abuse. And that's a confusing, shitty feeling. And voicing that you feel confused and shitty doesn't make you a bad person or someone who doesn't care about these victims. What does, however, is co-opting the brutalization of women to make yourself seem like a morally superior saint amongst a bunch of idiot plebeians who could never understand right and wrong like you do. Not only is it annoying and wrong, it's also disgusting, because you're proving that you don't give a shit about these women or their trauma. Instead, you care about pointing at people you can't even see to jeer that "I'm in the right because I would never make the idiot mistake of having a nuanced connection with art prior to finding out the person who created that art was a fucking monster." Genuinely who cares. Genuinely. Yes, obviously people should stop giving Neil any sort of money. God knows I will. But maybe instead of hunting people down to ostracize them for not using the right buzzwords, we instead focus on uplifting the voices of those affected, continuing to push the importance of believing women, and keep examining our relationship with art and the dangers of parasocial worship of celebrities. Using this unspeakable narrative of abuse to push your own agenda of moral superiority is disgusting and selfish, and it's these people who continuously revel in their self-proclaimed "goodness" who're doing fuck-all to actually uplift the voices of SA victims. It's gross.
