Some vague thoughts on Martin:

(I'm going to put aside my issues with his portrayal in season five and pursue a concrete line of thought here.)

His mother hates him because of his resemblance to his father. Here, the (absent) paternal figure is established as an obstacle to his mother's love; if he were to attempt to achieve it, he'd have to compete with the image of his father, to be seen instead of him.

Jon mistreats and berates him much like we can imagine his mother did; the difference is that Jon's love proves attainable. He serves as a projection of his feelings for his mother. He's his boss.

Martin only admits that he is glad of his mother's death, lets go of the idea of loving her, after he's replaced her with Jon, who pulled him out of the Lonely.

(While I don't like the idea that he is a wayward Jon's only tether to humanity, this is about Martin's psyche, and he very well may view it that way.) Yet, he must compete with yet another paternal figure: Elias, and his impact on Jon. Let me explain myself.

If Martin views himself as in direct opposition to Elias with regard to Jon's affections and alignment, this places him as the father he must compete against for his mother. Elias, who made Jon birth the new world in a shared act of creation, who put his words in Jon's mouth.

Elias is the father (and he would seek to place himself on the level of God, who is associated with paternity; Elias associates creation with control), perhaps even a mythological projection of the father Martin resembles: Elias deliberately draws a parallel between himself and Martin when he says Martin also loves manipulating people, and he, like Martin's actual father, has been known to desert people.

To reiterate: This is an attempted analysis of Martin's psyche, not of the actual themes and symbolism.

Mr Bossman, how do you feel about the fact that Michael D. Stortion is such a popular and beloved character in the Magnus Archives fandom? Was that the intention when he was being created? Because I certainly do love the Hand Man

Honestly? It was 100% intentional. I told Jonny that we needed a semi-sympathetic monster for the structure of the story and referenced Greed from the original FullMetal Alchemist anime as an example. Someone that people would like as an edgy friend only to be confronted with the reality of their station and flaws and ultimately doubt if they were ever friendly at all. Jonny took that brief and then took Michael (who was already on the cards) and then added the extra elements needed to fit that role for the narrative. I'd love to claim ownership of such a fun character to write and direct for but that's definitely Jonny. it's actually a really good example of how we used to write together. Often I would just deal with stuff at a big-picture base principals kind of way spotting patterns and that and then I would trust Jonny to come up with the most captivating and upsetting way to meet that brief. I find he works best within specific bounds rather than just given a tabula rasa to work with.

Hey archival assistants, avatars, and everyone in between!

We are proud to be hosting our fourth annual ArchiveCon - a fan-run online con for 18+ fans of the Rusty Quill horror podcast, The Magnus Archives (and now Protocol!)

Whether you're an old fan, a new fan, a deeply-rooted fandom denizen, or looking to make your first connections in our fan community, we hope you’ll join us. ArchiveCon may be online-only, but we’ve got all the energy and features of a traditional offline convention - everything from panels and special guests (voice actors, writers, and industry professionals!), to cosplay and games, streaming and discussion, and even an Artist’s Alley.  

Here’s the rundown:

- June 27 to 29, 2025 (Friday to Sunday!), from 4 PM to 6 PM, EST.

- Adults only! Most areas of the con will be SFW, but you still must be 18+ to attend.

- FREE TO ATTEND! (Registration is required and must be done so before the convention starts; you can register here!)

- All events are scheduled in EST, but international fans are welcome and most panels (at the discretion of individual panelists) will be recorded for post-convention, on-demand viewing.  

- Primarily focused on The Magnus Archives/Protocol, but fans of all things horror, podcasting, and transformative works will find something to love. The Plain Old Curious are always welcome, too - we have to feed The Eye somehow, right? ;)
