I know this is going to be a messy rant, but just finished watching Arcane and need to scream this out into the void. No worries, no spoilers.

I’m split in two, in one hand I seriously loved this series. I love the artistic choices, the narrative (even if I spent half the time screaming or crying), the design… I wish they had had more time, to explore more some of the themes. But still, amazing.

On the other hand, I’m so absolutely angry at the state of the entertainment industry, specially animation. Because I know a series like this has been deemed “unprofitable”. That projects with this level of love, of attention to detail, with this talent are “too expensive”. And the industry instead is choosing to fire the artists that make this shows hit like they do, and are trying to find shortcuts. Save costs.

Art, storytelling in particular is not a mass produced product. Is not something you can create with a plugin, a generative model. It requires intent, meaning, decisions. And a LOT of sweat, tears, doing and redoing, killing your darlings, listening to feedback from people that share your passion.

Because of all this, and the current shitty mentality the entire industry has… I know it won’t be another series like this for quite some time. We’ll see a lot of low effort copycats, paid by investors that want “something like Arcane, but quick and cheaper”, never understanding what make this series hit like it hit. Because maki something this powerful requires taking the time, hiring the talent, letting the artist dictate instead of the investor. And we won’t see this again for a long time.

So, TL;DR: Arcane was amazing, kudos to everyone involved in making it, you absolutely legends. Fuck the industry for making projects of this quality a rare unicorn instead of something we get to see more often.

one of my favorite things about arcane is that caitlyn and vi are both main characters who are undoubtedly and unapologetically lesbian. it’s treated so beautifully and almost casually in a way and that makes me soso happy <3 so often lesbian characters in shows will be written oddly or have strange plots with men, but not here. it just seems normal and i adore that, their love isn’t made out to be different than others. also!! the way vi’s butchness is portrayed is very important to me, even when she’s younger. it’s lovely to see <3
