13. Detective AU 48. Fake Dating - Rey(a) and Hael go
See here: some of my favorite aus ever (which isn’t saying much since i love them all but). Seeing as that I ALREADY have this AU sort of in the process of writing, adding Fake Dating……..definitely would be to lure a criminal out of hiding. Maybe they target certain couples or people? Or Rey(a) and Hael have to go an exhibition/show/party, where they need to blend in and get information subtly.
On a less dramatic note: someone else is crushing hard on one of them at work, so they ask the other to pretend to be their partner so the other person can fuck off. It leads to a staff party where people bring their significant others, so they go with each other and thus everyone thinks they’re dating. I love it.

Quote
When we hold each other, in the darkness, it doesn’t make the darkness go away. The bad things are still out there. The nightmares still walking. When we hold each other we feel not safe, but better. ‘It’s all right,’ we whisper, ‘I’m here, I love you.’ and we lie: ‘I’ll never leave you.’ For just a moment or two the darkness doesn’t seem so bad.
Neil Gaiman

The War’s End
The portal closes and Reya stumbles, feet hitting cold metal and stone. His chest burns. Gritting his teeth, he pushes forward, sprinting as if the hounds of the Legion snap at his heels. Every step rings and echoes, a tolling bell in the light-less hall.
Click, click, click--Eyes upon him and watching. Something waiting at the far end.
Reya clenches his jaw. There’s a prayer at the back of his head and a lingering promise breaking.
Dear King. Grant him this. He may not be Rey. Or Wraith. But he’s no fool. No matter what the Blade thinks. No matter what the Forsaken think.
He’s no pawn.
He’s a Knight.
Reya skids to a stop. Glittering ice meets his gaze. He’s running out of time. There’s a hound on his heels made of Light and he has no weapon but the dog’s own. The icy wall stands impassive to his plight, no remorse, no mercy.
Dear King. He knows you’ve been calling through dreams and echoes in sewers. He knows that when Rey walked to his first interrogation, it was you that whispered steps and ice. He knows that there’s only one reason he’s here, that the portal still works, that he can run these halls without dying.
Dear King. He knows the loyalty demanded. He knows what Rey will give. He knows who holds their heart. He knows the hands that feed him.
Dear King.
Please.
Reya sets his hand against the ice. Cold. Nothing.
All at once the wall shatters. Shards cut his cheeks, blood trickling like tears down his face. Beyond more void lies and he falls.
The portal closes and wind strikes at Reya’s blood-stained face. Snow buries his boots to the knee and twenty paces to his left, he knows there’s an outcropping buried. Fifty paces head, he knows a pitfall would trip his unwary feet.
He knows if he looks to his right, he’ll see shadow scars on dark cliff stone. He’ll see the wounds left in a war left undone, of a fight he has now, finally, come to end.
Reya lifts his gaze and meets the ghostly blue of Kion’s glare. His chin lifts and Reya squares his jaw.
“I ask we speak on a neutral ground.” He demands and Kion laughs.
“A little late for that, isn’t it?” Kion tilts his head, scarred lip curling into a smile that still haunts Rey’s dreams.
Reya shakes his head. “I want to speak with you. And Rey.”
Kion pauses, staring. In a second, the dark valley turns to the winds of the Shadowlands, and Kion stares with eyes made of void. Reya looks to his left and Rey stands small at his side, face pinched and hurt.
He doesn’t think twice of sliding his own ghostly hand into Rey’s.
They were ready.
Kion had asked for a decision.
Reya had his.
Rey bit his lip and took a deep breath of spectral air. Reya had always known his own. It is Rey that lingered and waited. It is Rey that waits for the dead, always.
Always.
Reya’s hand is cold and small in his own. It’s a wisp of what could be.
Rey still dreams where could be’s are real.
But he’s tired.
And he loves too much.
Always.
Kion knows the two outcomes like the back of his hand. He knows where the executioner’s axe could fall. He knows that there would only be one survivor.
He knows this through the screaming that replace his thoughts. He knows this beneath the whispers. He knows this beneath the Light.
Once upon a time, he might have dreamt.
Not anymore.
They fight. They must. All three of them in the shadow of the valley of their past. Screaming and crying and raging against ghosts of their own. Reya sees a child lost in the woods and a young boy willing to guide him home. Rey sees an empty alley and blood in his teeth and a young man hoping to set him free. Kion sees a pair in one body and the fireplace of a shared hearth.
What would Blackwell ever think of this?
One of them will have to tell the man that raised them all. One or two.
One body survives.
They stand.
They breathe.
They live.
