Thinking of you on Father’s Day
This Father’s Day, our thoughts are with all the families who have been affected by brain tumours.
Whether you are spending today with someone living with a brain tumour, are a father facing a devastating diagnosis, or are remembering a loved one, we are keeping you in our thoughts.
Father-of-two Stewart Bryson was first diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2014. He had an awake craniotomy during which surgeons removed as much of the tumour as they could, but they were unable to get it all out.
In 2016 a scan showed the tumour had grown so Stewart underwent a second operation. He was told that his tumour had progressed and was now a glioblastoma multiforme (GBM).
He said: “I'm grateful my body has responded so well to the chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment. Having a positive attitude and temperament has allowed me to just get on with daily life without dwelling on my condition.

Americans Celebrate Father’s Day
Share

Sunday is Father’s Day in the United States. The holiday is observed every year on the third Sunday of June.
The day is an occasion for families to celebrate fathers. Many families shower them with gifts, while restaurants are full of families taking fathers out for a meal.
According to History.com, the first Father’s Day was observed on July 5, 1908, when a West Virginia church held a service in memory of 362 men who had died in December in explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah. However, this was a one-time event and not an annual affair.
The following year, History reports, Sonora Smart Dodd, a woman who lived in Spokane, Washington, and who was one of six children raised by her father, a widower, began canvassing her community for support for the annual observance of Father’s Day. She was successful and in 1910, Washington state celebrated the first statewide observance of Father’s Day in the country.

Preview | Gallagher Premiership Cup Final
Leicester Tigers reach double figures in Premiership Rugby Final appearances this weekend, but also a first since 2013 as they meet Saracens in the domestic season’s showpiece.
As the top two in the Gallagher Premiership table at the end of its 26-round season, Tigers and Saracens go head to head in the Final for a third time, with each club taking one win from encounters at Twickenham in 2010 and ’11.
Saracens toppled defending champions Harlequins in the semi-finals last Saturday and are among only four clubs to beat the Tigers in the league programme alongside Wasps, Sale and Quins.
Tigers beat Northampton Saints in the semi-finals at Mattioli Woods Welford Road last Saturday with tries Freddie Steward and George Ford, who also kicked 17 points.
Head coach Steve Borthwick brings Chris Ashton and Richard Wigglesworth into the Tigers backline and there is a starting spot in the forwards for Ollie Chessum.
Dan Cole, a starter when Tigers last won the title at Twickenham in 2013 and approaching his 290th first-team appearance for his hometown club, said: “You learn over time and appreciate how hard it is just to win games in

England smash world-record 498-4 to beat Netherlands; Jos Buttler one of three players to hit hundreds
England broke their own world record for the highest score in ODI cricket after crunching 498-4 to beat Netherlands by 232 runs in a run-fest in Amstelveen.
Jos Buttler (162 not out of 70 balls), Dawid Malan (125 off 109) and Phil Salt (122 off 93) each scored centuries as England topped the 481-6 they had piled on against Australia at Trent Bridge in 2018.
Eoin Morgan's side had a chance to become the first team in history to score 500 in an ODI as they reached 488 with two balls remaining but Liam Livingstone (66no off 22) could only hit the next delivery for four.

England set new world record score of 498 against the Netherlands –as it happened!
2h ago 18.28 That’s it from us on a day when it was so hot that wherever you looked, you saw a record melting. For the second time in four days, I have a very happy headache. Thanks for your company and correspondence as we’ve tried to capture the first episode in the new season of The Jos Buttler Show. The OBO will be back on Sunday with the second match in this tight, tense little series.
The last word goes to Tom Bowtell, writing just before the Netherlands’ resistance came to an end. “Season’s sweatings, Tim,” he said. “As the rate ticks up to 65 per over, I wonder if there is any way we can work out the highest ever RRR recorded? If Netherlands bat out their 50 it should be over a thousand for the last ball…” Ha. Say what you like about one-sided games, they can be a lot of fun to discuss.

Netherlands vs England: The records Buttler, Salt and Malan broke as tourists smash highest ever ODI score
AMSTELVEEN – The moment the Dutch probably realised things were turning against them in this opening one-day international at Amstelveen came in the 40th over of England’s world-record innings.
Jos Buttler, on 73 from 39 balls at the time, smashed Bas de Leede onto the top of the indoor cricket centre here in Amstelveen, prompting a lengthy stoppage in play as a member of the groundstaff climbed a ladder onto the roof to retrieve the ball.
People searching for stray balls – which included the bewildered Netherlands fielders on more than one occasion – became a theme as England smashed an ODI record 26 sixes.

The increase — the fifth time the BoE’s Monetary Policy Committee has tightened policy in back-to-back meetings — takes the benchmark rate to 1.25 per cent. But, in a split vote, the committee held back from making a bigger 0.5 percentage point move, which won support from three members.

Bank of England raises interest rates to 1.25%
The Bank of England has raised interest rates for a fifth time in succession to tackle an inflation rate that is heading towards 11% amid soaring household energy bills.
In a move widely expected by City economists, the Bank’s monetary policy committee (MPC) voted by a majority to increase its key base rate by 0.25 percentage points to 1.25% in response to living costs rising at the fastest annual rate for four decades.
It also said it was ready to “act forcefully” if required, signalling further rate rises in the coming months.
In a downbeat assessment as the central bank attempts to navigate a narrow path between flatlining economic growth and surging inflation, Threadneedle Street now expects the economy to shrink in the second quarter while a further rise in household energy bills is expected to push

UK interest rates raised to 1.25% by Bank of England
UK interest rates have risen further as the Bank of England attempts to stem the pace of soaring prices.
Rates have increased from 1% to 1.25%, the fifth consecutive rise, pushing them to the highest level in 13 years.
It comes as finances are being squeezed by the rising cost of living, driven by record fuel and energy prices.
Inflation - the rate at which prices rise - is currently at a 40-year high of 9%, and the Bank warned it could surpass 11% later this year.
How high could interest rates go?
The Bank said rising energy prices were expected to drive living costs even higher in October, but added it would "act forcefully" if necessary should inflation pressures persist. Capital Economics speculates that the Bank could eventually have to raise interest rates to 3%.
One way to try to control rising prices - or inflation - is to raise interest rates. This increases the cost of borrowing and encourages people to borrow and spend less. Higher interest rates also motivate people to save more.

Tyson Fury says he will ‘100%’ return to the boxing ring if the money is right
WBC champion urges Frank Warren to ‘show me the money’
‘I am a prize fighter but it is going to cost if you want me’
Guardian sport

Tyson Fury says he will “100%” reverse his decision to never step into the ring again by defending his world heavyweight title – if the money is right.
After flooring Dillian Whyte at Wembley before a sellout crowd in April, the 33-year-old undefeated WBC heavyweight champion insisted that he would retire and has played down suggestions that he could be persuaded to face the winner of an expected rematch between Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk.
However, in an interview with Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions, Fury appeared more than ready to return to the boxing ring.

Tyson Fury will '100%' return to ring; wants £500m to fight Anthony Joshua-Oleksandr Usyk winner
However, the 33-year-old said he had been in talks with his promoter Frank Warren about a potential return and that they were "going to make something big, big happen."
Fury said: "I will be back in the ring 100%, just like in the movie when Jerry Maguire shouted: 'Show me the money!' If anyone can show me the money then it's [promoter] Frank Warren."
On Wednesday, Fury told Talksport that it would take £500m to tempt him out of retirement after it was reported he could return in a £200m megadeal.
