I've been off Tumblr and AO3 for a while and had to re-login and let me tell you it was depressing

slightly spicy opinion today lads but i do think the krester/ángel hookup was more a plot point to showcase krester's eventual arc than it was anything signifying a deeper romance.

we know, having seen the full show, that krester's first romance led to him getting shot and tove being sexually assaulted. first and foremost i am not blaming krester for what happened to him and his family. if i did that, i would be an idiot. but that doesn't change the material fact that events transpired so krester saw himself and his family being punished for him acting on his sexuality. fast forward to the kerberos. krester is obviously still dealing with the trauma of what happened, and we know that his family is not handling any of that well on any front. krester meets a guy who he's attracted to, he hooks up with him... and then he goes back to third class to see that his youngest sister is dead. once more, there's a clear line that he's drawing between him acting on his sexuality and harm befalling his family.

at the start of episode four, krester is already trying to earn his family's, namely his mother's, affections, which we see when he translates what sebastian is saying to try and blame elliot for what's happening on the ship. but even then, he's not immediately behaving awfully - he defends maura from his mother after all. but then as they're searching for elliot, they go to ángel and ramiro's cabin and ángel accidentally reveals that he knows krester's name. iben puts one and two together and throws all of krester's attempts at earning her love back in his face. no wonder, then, that krester spits in ángel's face and rejects him in such an ugly fashion when ángel clearly felt guilty for outing him. no wonder that he sees elliot and gives up his location to the mutineers, leading to jérôme being shot and elliot being captured and then elliot being, ostensibly, murdered. no wonder he throws tove's trauma back in her face multiple times. he's been made to feel like he's the problem for having sexual desires. that he is the one bringing tragedy to his family.

and all this is so much more compelling!!! krester and ángel's story doesn't need to be romantic for it to be interesting! they're already mirrors of each other in certain ways. i don't think krester and ángel are in some secret "real" relationship and that's why they hooked up. i think that narrative beat happens (and could have happened in other simulation loops) because it puts both krester and ángel into their worst headspaces, which leads to ángel's choice to grow and krester's choice to reject growth. this simualtion is basically "how can we make everyone into the worst versions of themselves," and this is just one way it does so.
