I love thinking about how scary the mighty nine must seem to the cerberus assembly.

First Vess Derogna seemingly drops out of existence, and then they show up with Ikithon muzzled, airing out all of his dirty laundry.

To top it of Caleb all but announces the martinet is next. TO HIS FACE!

I really do agree, and it's lowkey hilarious.

Especially if you consider the fact that the Mighty Nein look like bafoons to anyone who knows them at a glance. They literally stumble around doing fuck all and arguing about illicit novellas and building magical Rube Goldberg level plots that somehow work.

Imagine you meet a team made of 7 different nobodies that are somehow famous, but moreso for their accidental successes in various fields. First they're in Zadash, and they manage to beat up a monster - Oremid Hass notes this and moves on. Next the Cobalt Soul hears of them going into pirating and loses track of them entirely, save for a small blip on Darktow. A moment later and they're back, but now they've somehow built up a tangible relationship with THE BRIGHT QUEEN. From the outside, it feels like a group of friends who accidentally became internet famous for posting the most outrageous shit on YouTube just slid into the Foreign Diplomacy position in the UN and no one knows how they got there and no one has the gall to tell them to get out.

And after that - they stop a war. And immediately disappear up north. Kill Vess. Come back with Trent chained up for trial.

And. AND. Astrid becomes Archmage of Civil Influence.

Now, I have to be perfectly clear - Caleb is a fucking terror to them at this point. But Astrid? She seems to be on solid terms with Caleb. So now the entire Assembly has this weird chess arrangement on their board where they're not sure WHAT the hell is happening. By all accounts, Caleb is an unsheathed sword over ALL their necks. But Astrid is there - why? Did he LET her replace Trent because it will further his plans? Is he after Ludinus? Is she working with him?

What I'm getting at here is that thanks to his utter expertise at tangling the threads into a cohesive knitted blanket of a coup, Caleb Widogast, the skinny, meek Transmutation 101 Professor has the Cerberus Assembly by the balls, and none of them know what his plan even is because of how chaotic his actions have been in the past.

And I, for one, think this is beautiful.

the more i think about it, though, the more i really like the idea that the Kryn have, like, actual scientists, unlike literally the rest of the world.

Essek: yeah so i studied physics and graviturgy in undergrad, then worked as an assistant doing quantum physics equations, which led me to switch focus and get my masters in Temporal physics with a thesis on echoes and alternate timelines. Research position in Blightshore studying temporal instabilities, which built into my doctoral dissertation in Temporal physics, focusing on crosstime interactions and fate alteration, and most of my post-doc work was in fate alteration dealing with motes of possibility, although you know how dealing with the Luxon went. I put more time into work with the Lens, after that, although I still published papers here and there, mostly back to pure mathematical modeling.
