Power Generation / Electrical / HVAC
Large Electric motors can be cleaned onsite without chemicals effectively removing contamination from areas such as windings without damaging the underlying varnish, increasing efficiency and minimising risks. Turbines are also regularly cleaned to allow for NDT to be performed quickly and easily in a fraction of the time, without the worker injuries and potential damage to the equipment. Electrical industry users and users of electrical equipment face a constant battle with maintenance, efficiency and equipment uptime. Vortex dry ice cleaning technology meets those challenges by restoring both rotational and stationary electrical equipment to peak performance with dramatically shorter outages. Due to growing demand for electricity, some equipment such as pad-mounted switchgears, and substations, go without maintenance for extended periods. This results in less efficient operation, and more unplanned outages caused by flashover. Vortex Dry Ice blasting systems have been designed to support those applications that involve cleaning electrical apparatus so that efficiency is restored with minimal outage.
Dry ice is one of the best, if not the best, solution for cleaning all types of power generating and electrical equipment. Dry ice cleaning restores both rotating and stationary electrical equipment to peak performance with dramatically shorter outages.
Dry ice blasting is a non-conductive process, which makes it ideal for the power generation industry. Since electrical and power generating areas are difficult to clean they are often overlooked for maintenance. The dry ice blasting process safely removes dirt, grease, and other residues from generators, electric motors, stator windings and other sensitive equipment. Power generation is critical to industry so prompt cleaning and maintenance can help avoid outages and keep equipment running efficiently.
Benefits include quicker and superior clean, reduced or shorter outages, longer lasting equipment, improved efficiency of equipment, nonconductive, nontoxic, and lower overall costs of equipment and servicing equipment.

What is Dry Ice Blasting/Cleaning
Dry ice blast cleaning is similar to conventional media blasting except that the abrasive media is replaced by pellets of dry ice which literally disappear as soon as the cleaning cycle is complete.
The dry ice, although hard in appearance, does not rely on its abrasive properties for effective cleaning. This minimises the risk of damage to the substrate, or the areas adjacent to the workpiece, making Vortex Dry Ice Blasting the perfect solution for cleaning delicate substrates such as printed circuit boards or highly polished moulds. In the case of the latter, the blasting can often take place with the mould still hot and in-situ, and in fact we recommend this.
Vortex has infinite control over the ratios of dry ice, air and if applicable abrasive media used such as 75micron glass beads. This allows cleaning conditions to be altered to ensure removal of only the contaminants from surface coated components, allowing the bond between substrate and coating to remain intact. Alternatively, the cleaning parameters can be set to be more aggressive and both contaminant and coatings can be removed from the substrate in one operation. If profiling is required we can introduce between 500g and 5kg of glass beads per hour to the stream of dry ice pellets.
When the pellets impact a substrate with a tightly bonded layer of surface contamination, or unwanted coating, small solid dry ice particles enter the pores of the contaminant and any thermal cracks created within it by the cold dry ice.
As the dry ice particles impact and penetrate the surface contaminant, vast amounts of energy is released causing the particles to sublime into a much larger volume of CO2 gas, (approximately 700 times greater than the original pellet). The gas then rapidly expands and simply blasts the contaminant away from the substrate into the airstream.
Because the dry ice sublimes during the cleaning process, there are no problems associated with disposal of the blasting medium and no debris to clear away other than the material removed, which is usually found as a fine dust. Compared to solvent cleaning, there are no toxic fumes, no hazardous liquid wastes to dispose of and, as CO2 is inert, no chemical reactions take place.
ADVANTAGES OF USING DRY ICE BLASTING:
· Reduction in cleaning time
· A non-abrasive, non-flammable, and non-conductive cleaning method.
· Extremely environmentally-friendly and contains no secondary contaminants such as solvents or grit media.
· Very versatile and adaptable to many industries
· It’s clean and approved for use in the food and Aircraft industries.
· Most items to be cleaned in-place without time consuming disassembly.
· Can be used without damaging active electrical or mechanical parts or creating fire hazards.
· Can be used to remove production residues, release agents, contaminants, paints, oils and biofilms.
· Can be as gentle as dusting smoke damage from books or as aggressive as removing weld slag from tooling.
· Can be used for many general cleaning applications.
· It’s an environmentally friendly industrial cleaning solution.

FACTS About Dry Ice Blasting Cleaning
FACT 1: VERSATILE
No other form of industrial cleaning is as versatile as Dry Ice Blasting. We can literally clean EVERYTHING!
Plus, we can come to you! Our mobile blast crews will remove your contaminant anywhere in Australia!
FACT 2: NON- ABRASIVE
We won’t damage your equipment.
Dry Ice Blasting is fast becoming recognized the world over, providing non abrasive contaminant removal.
That means, we can take the paint off aircraft, and other delicate surfaces without damaging anything in any way!
FACT 3: ABRASIVE
BUT! We also have the power and ability using our mixed media machines to strip two pack paint off any surface, remove heavy rust and profile surfaces in preparation of receive coatings.
FACT 4: CARBON NEUTRAL
Believe it or not, Dry Ice Blasting is a carbon neutral form of industrial cleaning.
This is because the CO2 we use is recycled. It already existed. By using it to clean, we are replacing a method that would most likely involve carbon producing methods!
FACTS 5: WATER FREE
Dry Ice isn’t actually ice! It is SOLID STATE CARBON DIOXIDE GAS!
So, this allows us to do some crazy things that others can’t. We CAN clean LIVE electrical installations because it is completely dry and NON-CONDUCTIVE…
Huge downtime reductions here!
FACTS 6: VAPORISED
So what does happen to the dry ice?
Well, all it wants to be is a gas, and upon impact that is exactly what happens, the dry ice sublimates instantly and changes state from a solid, back to CO2 gas. It is the only thing that changes from a solid to gas without going through a liquid state!
FACT 7: CLEVER KINETIC
Which brings us nicely onto how it does what it does!
The temperature of dry ice (-79C) causes a miniature kinetic explosion upon impact with the surface. This supercools and dislodges the contaminant by causing it to contract slightly which fractures the bond. There is quite a bit more science to it but we don’t have the space here to explain! Check it out on Google.
FACT 8: INSIDE OR OUT
And because of the clever science behind Dry Ice Blasting we can actually bring it inside to clean!
There is no secondary waste stream to contain, unlike sand, bead shot and soda blasting. We just sweep up the contaminant we have removed or fold up and remove the containment sheeting we may have used.
And of course we can do all this outside also!
FACT 9: DOWNTIME
And so, how will it save you money?
By blast cleaning while in situ, the time taken to dismantle and reassemble components is removed from the equation. Dry Ice Blasting is also a lot quicker than traditional forms of cleaning. A lot quicker!
It goes without saying, a machine that isn’t running isn’t earning. By reducing downtime we will increase your production rate.
