An Almost Perfect Morning
I started off trying to make this fluff, I swear. I really tried.
Here’s a 1.5k Klance one-shot about nervous Lance and super boyfriend Keith.
Lance’s pocket had never felt heavier.
He knew he wanted this. Out of the endless number of decisions he felt unsure of, this was the one he absolutely would never regret.
So then why was he so nervous?
They say there are an infinite amount of universes, each with a slightly different outcome than the last. Well, somehow Lance was watching them all play out inside of his head. Breakfast at their favorite cafe, a walk past the school where they met, a proposal under the tree where they shared their first kiss.
But what if he said no? What if Lance was a fool for even asking? What if he gets publicly shamed and the whole thing would be his fault...what if--
“Lance?” a warm voice brought him out of his thoughts, and back to the surface.
Lance looked to his left, and he was met with a pair of warm, grey eyes. They looked inviting, concerned…
Comforting.
“Were you listening to anything I was just saying?” Keith’s tone wasn’t accusatory at all, but Lance still felt his mouth become dry.
“Yeah, of course I was! We were talking about the…” Lance trailed off. Shit, there truly was no point in lying, but he was too far gone to stop now.
“The new movie coming out tomorrow! I don’t know babe, I mean we could totally just pirate it off this movie website I found-”
“Lance I was talking about my old friend, Shiro. He’s coming into the city tomorrow morning, remember?” Oh, did Lance remember.
Lance remembered strong, tall, beautiful Shiro, who Keith was totally crushing on throughout his adolescent years.
Muscular, popular, incredibly friendly Shiro.
“He’s...coming...tomorrow morning?” Shiiiiiiit.
“If that’s alright with you, I’ll ask again, I want to show him around. He hasn’t been back here since we were in school. Don’t you have work in the morning anyway?”
“No...I-uh. I actually took the day off. I was hoping we’d spend some time together?” Lance squeaked in the most pathetically small voice he had ever used. He felt like his windpipes were collapsing.
“That sounds great, can’t we do the day after tomorrow instead?” No, you idiot, I used my last vacation day until next year.
“I guess.” he pouted. That’s is, Lance felt hopeless. He would have to put the ring back into the drawer where its been living for the last month, itching to be taken out and worn.
But he guessed it would have to wait for another perfect morning. If it ever came.
Lance stood up suddenly, shaking off Keith’s hand which was resting comfortable on his thigh.
“Do we have any cereal left?” he headed toward the kitchen, sparing no glance to his confused and worried boyfriend.
“Uh, Lance, it’s 10:30 at night.” Lance ignored him, sifting through the shelves above the counter.
“Bitchin’, we got honey nut cheerios!”
Keith peeled himself off the couch and followed his boyfriend with silent footsteps. He snaked his thin arms around Lance’s waist, who immediately tensed up and froze. Keith frowned, placing his chin in the crook of Lance’s shoulder.
“What’s the matter, is it because of Shiro?”
“No! I mean...no-”
“So it is about Shiro”
“It’s not about him specifically I mean..I like the guy. I do.” Lance shrugged, finding a loss for words.
“Then what’s on your mind?” Each warm breath on Lance’s neck sent shivers down his spine, and straight into his pocket.
“I...I guess I’m not feeling all that well. I bet some food will help pick me up.” Lance turned his head ever so slightly, his boyfriend’s messy black hair now visible. His gaze was still so warm.
“-and maybe some sleep too.”
“Yeah...that sounds nice”
Lance stared at the darkened ceiling for what felt like hours. According to his phone clock however, it had been about 23 minutes.
He rolled over onto his side, the empty feeling in his stomach still incredibly overwhelming. His gaze fell on their shared dresser. A new tomb for a ring that would never see the light of day... unless Lance just…
Proposed.
Told Keith that he had never been so sure of anything in his life.
That he was ready to spend the rest of his life with him, and only him.
He wanted to show Keith how much he truly loved him.
And he couldn’t even do that.
With a heavy sigh, Lance rolled onto his stomach, planting his face into his pillow until he had to come up for air.
Despite the endless tossing and turning, Keith still laid motionless, deep in relaxing sleep like Lance should be. Not letting his mind get the better of him over something that wasn’t...even...that big of a deal.
Lance threw the blankets off of him, suddenly too hot to stand the fabric sticking to his sweaty skin. His shirt came off in one clean movement.
And suddenly he could breathe again.
He slid off the bed and onto the cool, hardwood floor, tempted to melt into the floorboards.
His mind continued to race, the thumping in his brain all stemming from one source. His feet carried him to the dresser, eyes burning holes through the wooden planks and straight into the velvet box. His hand grasped the handle in the dark, pulling the drawer open with more force than he intended. The wooden box fell to the floor with a bang and a crack, clothes spilling onto the floor and the small velvet box flying across the room.
“Lance? What the hell are you-”
“I’m alright, just fell on my way back from the bathroom.”
“You weren’t in the bathroom- you’ve been kicking and discarding clothing for the past twenty minutes.” Keith sat up in the bed. Even though the room was plunged into darkness, Lance could still see the outline of his boyfriend rubbing his eyes and stretching his arms. It was like he shone even in shadows.
“Oh...sorry I woke you”
“Lance what is up with you?” Keith asked again, irritation growing.
“It’s 2 in the morning…”
Lance’s eyes darted over to the corner of the room where the ring slid. His mouth opened and the confession poured out. “I really really love you” he stumbled over the words without his brain’s consent. Well, he thought. Here we go.
“Lance?”
“You are the most amazing and wonderful thing that has ever happened to my life. I-I know we didn’t exactly start off as this pair of star crossed lovers...but you just deserve someone who can show you how much he loves you every single day.”
“Lance you’re rambling again-”
“And I want that to be me. I want to be someone who you look at the same way I look at you. The whole world is unstable, and messy, and broken. But I look at you, and everything just becomes so still. Like the rest of the world could try to rock me, but we would just stay locked in place. I want to be that person for you. I want you to be able to count on me.”
“Lance, listen hon-”
“I just...I just w-want you to b-be…” He was losing his grip, he could already feel the pounding in his head get bigger, louder, stronger.
Then it stopped. In front of his eyes, barely a centimeter between their faces, were the eyes he could see no matter how dark his room was. Keith placed a hand on his shoulder, dispelling the thoughts like a gust of wind.
“You don’t need to prove yourself to me, Lance.” Keith began, eyes focused on Lance’s chest.
“I’ve never been very good at showing how much you mean to me...maybe that’s my fault. But I’m telling you now. You are my entire world. I could never think of you as anything less than that. Now, won’t you come back to bed?” He affectionately pushed a strand of hair from Lance’s sweaty forehead, “We have to get up early tomorrow.” and he smiled.
Lance could never understand how Keith could do that. Like some kind of...angel. Some badass angel that came to fight Lance’s demons and scare them away. It’s lame to say, but no part of that statement could ever be false.
“You’re right...I’ll go turn the fan on. No wonder this room is hot as hell.” Keith patted his shoulder one last time before letting go, and turned back to their bed. Lance made sure to swipe the ring back into his pocket on his way to the fan switch.
Lance lowered himself back onto the bed, lifting his feet onto the warm, plush mattress. It no longer felt hot and constricting.
So maybe he would have to wait a bit longer until he could ask him, but for the first time in a month, he didn’t mind the extra time.
He knew that it didn’t matter how long they waited. Even without the wedding band, they were incredibly, deeply, and truly in love.
And Lance went to sleep with no weight in his stomach.
And he dreamed, that night, he had flown with angels.

A Little Light (Klance 1-Shot)
The door opened with a soft hiss. The light from the hall threw a soft beam of yellow across the floor, interrupted by the shadow of a person in the doorway. The silhouette peaked its head in the room.
"Lance?" he called out into the darkness, voice barely above a whisper. No reply.
He took a few quiet steps into the room.
"Laaaaance?" he called again, a little bit louder. Again, no reply. The light from the hall outlined a bed in the corner. Lance lay sprawled out across it, one hand wedged under the pillow and another thrown out beside him. He had kicked most of the covers off and his legs were bent and what couldn't be comfortable angles. The person in the doorway almost laughed at the sight when suddenly, the door closed behind him with a hiss, throwing the room into darkness.
He froze.
"Oh jeez. This was such a bad idea. What was I thinking?" He took a step back.
"Where the hell is the door..." He turned around, blindly grabbing in the darkness, because he had to sneak in the middle of the night and he had to talk to someone and--  “SHIT” With a crash, he went tumbling to the ground. Hold on...
“When did that desk get there??”
"Mmm?" Came a sleepy voice, obviously not that perturbed by the loud crash. He reached out his hand, fumbling for the light switch.
"Uhh... Keith?? Is that you?"
Blinded by the sudden light, Keith threw up a hand to shield his eyes.
"Uhh, shit, sorry Lance."
"What are you doing here? It's like" -he yawns- "two AM or two doboshes past or whatever."
"Um." Keith paused a moment to take in his surroundings. Lance rubbed his eyes, swathed in a shirt many sizes too big, advertising some kind of space drink. Carpeted floor, blue decor, junk everywhere.
And here Keith was, collapsed on the floor, cradling a stubbed toe in a slipper shaped like the red lion which he no longer piloted- Lance did and-- Wait. That was the perfect excuse.
"Oh... well, I came here because I...I wanted to give these to you!" Keith yanked the red slipper off his foot in a swift motion and held it in the air triumphantly. Lance gave him a blank stare.
"You know! Because, I don't pilot Red anymore- and I know you love those blue slippers, maybe you could, give them to Allura now? Does she like slippers? Should I get black lion slippers? I feel like the black lion is too serious to have slippers- Where did these even come from? Did Alfor come up with the idea for some sweet slippers to match his space lions or did someone find-"
"Keith."
"..Yeah?"
"Dude, why are you really here?"
Keith felt hopeless. He was, for one, exhausted, but he knew his ruse was a feeble attempt to justify sneaking into Lance's room at 2am and oh gosh, that sounded scandalous, but that wasn't his intention at all! it was really much more pathetic than that. He was... out of his element. Lance was supposed to be the one doing stupid stuff like this- cracking jokes about Voltron, playing pranks, stubbing his toe. Keith should be the serious one, business and tactic. The lone wolf, the leader.
Like Shiro was. He sighed.
"Uh, I guess I just... Needed someone to talk to."
Lance blinked.
"And you came to me? Seriously?"
Keith instantly crossed his arms in defense and scowled.
"Look man, if you're gonna make fun I'll get out of here, ok? I didn't want to-"
"Hey hey no! It's totally ok. I was just surprised." Keith blinked at the sudden response.
"Uh, Why don't you come sit?" Lance crossed his legs and patted the empty space beside him. Keith tiptoed across the room and sat down tentatively.
"What's buggin ya?"
Keith hesitated, despite the fact he had come to Lance to talk about just that.
"It's not like, that bad I just, uh, had a nightmare."
Keith trailed off and Lance raised an eyebrow.
"Well, ok, more like a couple nightmares. Frequent ones, actually. Sometimes I would go to Shiro with stuff like this, because I know he knows what it's like but..."
Keith faltered. They both felt the absence of Shiro, it was heavy in the air. Just like the empty spaces in the black lion.
Keith felt a chill that didn't seem to be there before.
"I think I just need a laugh." Keith finally cut through the pause. "-Or something." He looked at Lance. Lance's eyebrows shot upward.
"Aw man, you put me on the spot! Now I don't remember a single joke."
"I don't think I meant it like tha-"
"WAIT, wait, I've got one. Keith, are we members of Voltron or not?"
Keith narrowed his eyes.
"Lance of course we are- what does this have to do with-"
"Well, I guess we need to quit LION around and save the universe!" Lance flashed Keith a wide smile, accompanied by signature finger guns. Keith gave him a blank stare. Lance held his pose.
"I don't..." Keith tilted his head a little. Lance waited...then pretended to shoot his finger guns. Keith’s eyes widened in realization.
"Oh... Oh! I get it! Lions! Oh!!" Lance giggled at his revelation and after a moment Keith joined him. Maybe it was their exhaustion making things seem funnier than they really were, or maybe it was space madness. Or just maybe, the paladins hadn't laughed in so long once they started they couldn't stop. Keith cracked up at Lance's loud laugh and Lance laughed at Keith; and after a moment they were doubled over on the bed cackling. Lance kicked his feet in the air and Keith’s eyes began to water.
"This is-wheeze- So stupid!" Lance struggled to speak.
"The joke wasn't even that funny- ah- Actually, it was really bad."
They stayed there for a second, trying to catch their breath.
"That was awful. But thanks for that." Keith finally managed. He swung out his hand to give Lance a comforting pat, but miscalculated, and ended up hitting Lance in the chest harder than expected.
"Ow, dude." Lance made a move to swat at Keith's head.
"Oh jeez I'm sorry-" Keith turned his head to apologize, and consequently, Lance smacked him in the face.
"What was that one for?!"
"You turned your head! I didn't mean to!"
"Oh, you're asking for it now." Keith swung a light punch at Lance's arm but Lance knocked it away and lunged for Keith's sides, furiously tickling him. Keith immediately curled into a ball, wheezing with laughter as he tried to swat Lance's hands away.
"Stop! Sto-ahHa!" Keith rolled away clumsily. He snatched Lance's arm from the air, pinning it down, and collapsed on top of the other one. They stayed like that a second, catching their breath, until Lance wiggled his shoulder.
"Dude my arm is falling asleep."
"Oh, sorry." Keith let go and Lance pulled his arm back, rubbing his wrist.
"The ticklish ones are always the toughest fighters." Lance stated with a nod.
Keith snorted.
"Being ticklish is not the reason I can kick your ass."
"Oh? I was going easy on you but I can see you're pretty confident in your abilities, drop-out!"
"Oh wow, You haven't called me drop-out since we found the blue lion, you're really scraping the bottom of the barrel aren't ya?" Keith jabbed back at him.
"Oh no I got plenty of nicknames for you- mullet-head, Kiki, Keith Lime Pie, Chief- because it sorta sounds like Keith ya know.”
"I'm sorry did you say Keith lime pie?"
"Keith me in your mind, uh."
Keith chuckled in response.
"These aren't even nicknames anymore, they're just puns with my name."
"Keith it cool."
"These are just getting worse and worse"
"Keithing up with the Paladashians."
"Huh?"
"Never mind". Lance flashed him a wide grin. "Wow, That was probably my best one. That’s it, I've peaked forever."
Keith shook his head. He didn’t get the joke, but he wasn’t going to let Lance know that.
"Ugh I'm so tired...Allura's not gonna make us train tomorrow morning is she?" Lance's face fell at the thought.
Keith frowned.
"Oh yeah. It is late I should probably-" His sentence trailed off as he started to get up.
"Wait, Keith." Lance said suddenly and Keith paused.
"I didn't wanna like, uh, kick you out. I know Shiro disappearing has been shitty on the whole team, you especially." Keith began to reply, but Lance rambled on. "Like, I think it was really cool of you to come and talk to me, because I know Shiro is a really sensitive subject, and nightmares are freaky. Mental health is hard, I can relate. I know I seem confident all the time, but I've got insecurities too."
Keith cocked an eyebrow at him and smiled. "Oh, really?"
Lance missed the sarcasm completely. "Yeah! Like I'm always worried that I don't contribute enough to the team...or I'm the weakest guy, or annoying, or self centered because I'm worried people don't ever take me seriously. but sometimes...I can't help it, you know? Because if someone's gonna like me, I gotta like myself first...right? Or at least act the part-" Lance abruptly cut off as he realizes he dumped a lot more information than he wanted.
"It's... pretty late. I'm just talking and talking." He added, his voice wavering, losing confidence with each word.
"Lance." concern crept into Keith's voice as he sat back down.
"Nobody thinks you're lame, or annoying, or any of those things. Yeah, we do poke fun at you, but you're a great part of Voltron and we wouldn't be the same without you. Remember when you woke up from a coma and shot Sendak? That was badass! Lance… you always go with your gut and you never hesitate! You always seem to know what you're doing." Lance beamed a little. Like he must've said something right.
"Are you kidding? Coming from our fearless leader, taking up the black lion! Maybe you charged in a little too recklessly in the beginning, but man. You’ve been through a lot, you're doing a great job." Lance nudged Keith’s shoulder in support.
"No way you think that- I'm a shitty leader! I almost got us all killed!"
"Yeah sure... name one of us who hasn't done that."
Keith thought for a second.
"Uh... Hunk?"
"Ok that's true." Lance squinted at him.
"Pidge?"
"Remember Rover?"
"She saved all of us after the whole Rover thing so it doesn't count." Keith pointed out.
"Ok true but anyway this isn't the point. The point is you're a good leader, and you're learning. We all are, dios mío, we're on a magical alien castle flying lions in SPACE."
They both pause for a second.
"Jeez...when you say it like that-" Keith looked more concerned than nervous now. Lance laughed.
"Keith just, don't be scared to be, well, scared."
"Elegant."
"Look all I'm saying is you can come wake me up by sneaking into my room like a creeper to talk about your feelings any time."
Keith laughed and Lance grinned at him.
"Goodnight Lance. Thanks, uhh, for talking to me..I guess." Keith stood up again, feeling like he didn't say enough. He paused for a moment, hesitantly shuffling his feet. Suddenly, Lance jumped up from the bed and planted a kiss on his cheek. They both blushed bright red.
"Oh, uh, I'm sorry, I should've asked or something, oh-" Lance stuttered over his words as Keith stood, frozen.
"I...I thought you liked Allura?!" He shouted, more of an accusation than a question. Lance's jaw dropped in surprise, but he started to laugh.
"I mean I've flirted with Allura, sure, like Have You Seen Her? And she's really inspiring and cool so yeah I had a crush on her for a bit. But dude...I've had a crush on you since like, forEVER."
Keith unwillingly blushed even harder and stared at Lance in confusion.
"What the fuck! I thought you hated me!"
"I thought YOU hated ME!" Lance jabbed back at him, looking more uncomfortable by the second.
"Ok, like, maybe at the Garrison I had a weird rivalry thing but turns out that was a crush I repressed! Who knew?! Turns out, you have the... Keith to my heart.” Lance’s nervous expression turned into a shit-eating grin.
Keith was absolutely floored. Of course this dumbass would pull this. Luckily for this dumbass, Keith happened to like him back. Of course Lance would drop this on him now, when Keith was completely consumed with his search for Shiro, his grief, his nightmares- when he had to lead the whole team by himself- when he thought Lance hated him for the longest time and--
You know what? Maybe Keith deserved some happiness. Maybe in what seemed like an endless tunnel of darkness, he needed a little bit of light. Even if that light was... Lance. Dumb, oblivious, beautiful Lance. Before he could say another word, Keith grabbed Lance’s shoulders and kissed him. Lance managed a surprised "mmphf!" sound and Keith almost pulled back until Lance put his hands on Keith's hips. Keith relaxed a bit and let himself enjoy the kiss, but not for long- he was still mad.
Keith pulled back, his face in a determined frown, face as red as the lion he used to pilot.
"Oh ok, so does that mean-"
"Shut up Lance."
"Understandably- but I'm a little confused-" Keith put his hand over Lance's mouth.
"Shut. Up." Keith's head was swarmed with thoughts, most notably: holy shit, I like Lance and holy shit, I'm pissed at Lance.
Keith let these thoughts fight in his head for a second before he reconciled to forgive Lance almost immediately, definitely not because of how much he enjoyed kissing his dumb face. He let his hand drop from Lance's mouth. He turned toward him to see Lance giving him the most confused and nervous face he’s ever seen. Despite that, Lance flashed a shy grin.
Damn, Lance was cute. How had he managed to win Keith over that easily?
"Ok, so. I like you." Keith stated. Lance just started back dumbly.
"I.. hoped so?"
"Good, now, what do we do now."
Lance snorted with laughter.
"I guess we date if you want! I dunno man, you kissed me back, I didn't think I'd get that far."
Keith smiled, an actual, genuine smile. It was good to know he had confused Lance as much as Lance had confused him.
"I guess I'll see you tomorrow then. you're paying for dinner!"
Lance's eyebrows shot up and Keith pecked him on the lips before turning and walking right out the door. As he turned into the hall a feeling of relief washed over him. Not his original intentions of going to Lance's room, but damn if it didn't make him feel a little lighter on his feet.
