Altean culture is centered around community and ingenuity because, in essence, despite its ethereal beauty and crystal structures, Altea is a Space Australia.

The sky rains razor-sharp, boiling rocks. Look at the creatures that Pidge encounters in the holograms. It’s a Death World.

While strength and camouflage and the ability to channel crystal energy were all very good tools for survival, it wasn’t initially enough. It was only when the primitive Alteans began banding together and working as a group that they truly began to thrive.

Members of the group that were especially good innovators, and could contribute to the survival and comfort of the collective, were especially well-respected; artists who made life more pleasant, doctors, engineers, alchemists… the more creative and good at bringing your vision to life you were, the more highly respected.

Because it became their bread and butter, and allowed them to thrive, these became the backbones of Altean society; togetherness, group-care, and innovation.

And they colored interactions with other species, as well; once they had entered an alliance, the new species became part of their “neighborhood,” and they pack-bonded intensely with its people. Their aggression toward other species was very low, basically, since they instinctively wanted to fit in with most species (to the point of color change and height modification,) which gave them their reputation as diplomats in the galactic community.
