Final Thoughts

Alienation of a generation
Alienation of childhood
Alienation of my childhood memories
Through out this unit I have endeavoured to take my experiences of the workshops and bring them to my chosen theme. The folded form was challenging but helped to break down my restraint as I began to explore the possibilities of my theme. I wanted to experiment and attempted various methods of creating a facial form. However, the resulting objects seem to convey a sense anger. Sharp lines, frowning faces not necessarily the emotions and sense I wanted to create.
In response I decided to keep this form for another time as I was more intent on creating a face that had features of innocence rather than anger (although there is an anger in the urgency to the on-going crisis that we are facing) but also conveying sadness.
Mono-printing opened possibilities and following the session I attended a further workshop independently to learn more about the possibilities. It allowed me to explore my form more closely creating variations from the same singular image. Whilst some of the initial ideas stalled and were more interesting when I looked to the other unit brief I found a form that I could focus on and would take forward to other workshops such as those I would create Cyanotype and Screen Print.
Something about these forms felt appropriate as I wanted to capture the notion of memories and my own childhood, but also creating poster like images.
It was the projection workshop that really had an impact and also brought my creative spark back to life (possibly faltering as I focused to much on finding a final solution).
The projection of old images allowed me to distort them blurring the focal point and a chance experiment with mesh allowed me to manipulate this further. Creating a subject on to which the image would fall created a subsequent image that passed beyond the mesh. Each element had been alienated from the other.

Photogram experiments using wire form, doll parts and some childhood toys.
The mesh continues to bring something different to each process I incorporate it in to. I'm now very drawn to the full form as opposed to the single impression of the face.

PAN TERZIS/MEGA PRESS
Our workshop this week was using Risograph. I have wanted to use this medium for a long time so this was and is an opportunity that I will most definitely bring to my development work.

I was recently introduced to the works of Kiki Smith a prominent American contemporary artist. I was instantly hooked as her early works have an emphasis on the construct of the body and the balance between life and death. Her works also incorporate a mix of media such as sculpture, printmaking, and photography all of which I am very drawn to myself.

Also following on from Douglas Morland’s workshop I was reminded of my first experiences of hearing Autobahn when I was about 8. It was actually one of the few things I remember my father introducing me to when he pretty much made me listen to it with the headphones on. I can remember being amazed by the way in which the sound travelled through me and around me, enhanced even more when closing your eyes. When I reflect on it more I realise that there are a great number of soundscapes that have shaped my musical and artistic interests.

Following the Douglas Morland workshop I was reminded of some of the discussion around the recording of one particular track, A Day in the Life, because it does play with sound on so many levels.
