FINAL ASSESSMENT FOLIO (10 IMAGES)
TOP to BOTTOM
1. Video - washing machine drum (heart beating) and paper image of clothes in washing machine (folded form). Passage of time, ebbs and flows of recovery from illness. (Clothing - traces of a past self going through a process of renewal).
2. Sculpture - strong, determined head on malfunctioning paper body. Tracing the revolving nature of recovery. Not a linear process.
3. Printmaking - mixed media risograph print and acrylic, mark making. The heart and the blood vessels layered. From fragility comes strength. Tracing the messiness of recovery.
4. Sculpture - clay organs in the body. Digital media bringing coloured tones and layering to highlight traces of positive recovery. Construction and reconstruction (of clay/body organs) to build strength. Mirror like traces, looking within.
5. Sculpture - paper burn out. Tracing the body's journey from illness to well-being. Construction (paper sculpture folded form dipped in clay), deconstruction (shattered in kiln), reconstruction (fragments reformed on lightbox). Developed with digital media.
6. Sculpture - paper tape (folded form) and shadow of washing machine door developed with digital media. Tracing the structure of the heart and it's fragile form. Using light to see the subtle contrasting details.
7. Ink drawing - shadow of metal heart sculpture drawn on tile, developed with digital media. Tracing the heart and it's form showing fragility and strength combined within the messy totality of it all .
8. Cyanotype printmaking - mesh heart sculpture print developed with digital media. Capturing the essence of the beating of a heart in traces of movement.
9. Cyanotype printmaking - print from no.8 above (mesh heart print) used to create a repeating pattern, printed on acetate. Cyanotype print made from new image. Capturing the beating of a heart in each chamber with a more solid form. Traces of static movement.
10. Sculpture - metal and folded paper heart sculptures developed with digital media. Traces of strength and fragility coming together as one. Messiness and dysfunction can be beautiful.

PROJECT STATEMENT (above). Also on blog that starts PROJECT INDEX.
ARTIST STATEMENT
This project looks at the body's journey from ill health to well-being. It considers the body as a functioning and malfunctioning entity. Body parts (mainly the heart) are explored in terms of physical structure and associated emotions. Although not explicitly given attention, emotions can be experienced by the viewer through the act of viewing the work and it's myriad of elements (blood, ill health, fragile components). Although a raw and personal project choice, it has been a freeing experience carried out with compassion. Strength comes from vulnerability. I feel stronger as a direct result of undertaking this project.

TRACING LIFE... Where you have been, where you are now and where you are going next. Looking back to look forward. Seeing elements of yourself. What to keep, what to lose. What's real, what's fake. What is the meaning and the purpose. Choosing truth over illusion. Choosing presence over delusion. Choosing peace.

TRACING the form and sounds of the heart. The objects become traces as they lose their original form. They transcend their known qualities to become light and movement. When you lose something you gain something else as time passes, and it's often unexpected.
VIDEO - final version from last blog. Added different camera angles and filters. Going from almost black and white to natural tones, also rhythm starts in chaos but becomes steadier.
Heartbeat sound made by pulling plastic table cloth where I make art. Paper and metal heart sculptures and ink heart tile shadow drawing, deconstructed and reconstructed from the place of original creation.

TRACING the form and structure of the heart using metal and paper.
Video - Deconstruction of a heart. Looking at the individual pieces that make the whole (Gestalt Theory). Seeing transformation as each object is viewed from a new perspective.
Used the elements from the previous blogs (metal, folded paper tape heart sculptures, ink shadow drawing on tile). Art table setting is the place of original creation and deconstruction.

TRACING the form and structure of the heart. Some splatters of blood. Understanding the heart as a generator of kindness and as a functioning bodily organ. Capturing the physical and the emotional elements.
Top 2 images overlaid each other (wire heart, paper heart, ink heart shadow from last 5 blogs). Digital media used to create more images representing the heart, blood and blood vessels.

Bottom image developed with repetition, layering and slight colour variation (subtle tones). Shadow of metal heart drawn with ink.
TRACING the messiness and the strength within the heart and body.
Solid blood vessels v messy blood with layering....the multi-layered journey the blood takes getting to organs in the body. The layers in the journey to wellness. Day by day, moment by moment.

Developing the last blog with digital media. Ink drawings from the shadow of a metal heart (anatomical) sculpture on a white tile.
TRACING the heart by seeing the beauty and simplicity in the fragility and the messiness.
Messy blood and solid blood vessels - fragility and strength. Passage of time shown in old-fashioned style presentation of anatomical image.

TRACING the space that the heart takes up. Bringing the mechanical and the visceral together.
Heart made with wire placed on white tile. Shadows drawn with ink. Not entirely happy with how the ink looks. However it is a good representation of blood and how messy it is.

TRACING the visceral elements of a heart. Looking in the mirror - what am I? What is my purpose? An exploration beyond tradition. Solid colour - an emergence of something new. Bringing in the light - what was unseen can now be seen.
Developed the heart with digital media. Created layers using solid colour to balance the work and make the lines more fragile.
PROJECT INDEX
Bottom - 1st 2 right side is reflection of the image in a mirror. Last 2 light reflected with lamp. Using light as a softer element to balance the hardness of the lines.

TRACING the structure of the heart using light and shadow.
A deeper exploration of form from the last blog. Using lines and shadow to explore the structure of the heart.
TOP, image 2
Drew with ink around the outside of the heart shadow. More difficult than anticipated fitting hand between wall and glass and seeing outline of the heart shape without shadow of hand getting in the way.
Images 3 & 4 I created a second paper tape heart with the same materials and made a shadow against the original outline.
Images 5 & 6 the second paper tape heart overlaid the original shadow outline.
Image 7 second paper tape heart shadow drawn next to the original outline (with shadow).
Image 8 image without shadow

TRACING form and structure of an anatomical heart with light and shadow
- Top image, paper tape folded and hand sewn. Was too difficult to get the needle through the layers to continue with this method.
- Image 2, paper tape folded like a concertina.
- Image 3, paper tape made into a heart.
- Image 4, digital media used to show light and shadow
- Images 5, 6, 7, paper tape laid on glass to create shadow on wall.
- Images 8, 9, paper tape heart shadow on wall

Using light and paper tape tracing the journey of the heart to recovery and good health. The light reflected on the wall is a more detailed exploration of the structure and form within the heart vessels.
SEMIOTICS - I used the traditional colour of pink associated with hearts. It is seen as a whole, a happy heart, not broken. This is reinforced by the light in the middle.

RESEARCH Looking at how shadow and light is used in animation. I like the simplicity of the character drawings. Thinking of how to balance introspection with extroversion in my work.

Research looking at shadows and different ways to use shadows in art. Kinetic theatre is a performance with music. Ruth Asawa's work is delicate and more introspective.
