Project Statement
Scottish identity is often defined down to its stereotypes such as haggis, bagpipes, and red hair. Whilst some of these are Scottish traditions that are important there doesn’t seem to be much common knowledge about the old traditions and language of the land. Through this project I want to explore the Scottish Identity and why some Scottish people might feel alienated from their culture because of the caricature we have become to tourists or the anglicised state of some parts of the country. Gàidhlig and Scots are dying out and along with that could be our traditions and culture. It is good to embrace positive change in our culture however it is very important to know our history.

Screenprinting onto Map
I combined my screenprinting with my map and screenprinted the word stranger in Gàidhlig onto it. I enjoyed the shapes the stitching from the map left on the screen so I took some photos.

Artist Research - Glasgow contemporary culture within photography
Tumblr media
Simon Murphy
Simon Murphy is a Photographer who is most famous for his work Photographing Govanhill, Glasgow. I had the pleasure of seeing his Govanhill exhibition in person last year and it really inspired me. Govanhill is one of the most diverse areas of Glasgow which has caused some tension within the community due to their differences; however, it is what makes it such an incredibly interesting and exciting area and this is why Murphy has chosen to photograph there. Through his street photography of individuals who reside in Govanhill, Simon murphy captures the culture of modern day Glasgow which seems to be a complete mix. Glasgow is home to people from all sorts of walks of life and within that come many different cultures and ways if thinking. I think this bringing together of culture is amazing and something to be celebrated; however, it can be the cause of conflict in many groups. I believe the Contemporary Scottish identity goes beyond ethnicity and is more about wanting to identify as Scottish and having an interest and love for the country and its culture.

Oscar Marzaroli
Oscar Marazaroli is a Scottish documentary photographer who did an amazing job of capturing Glasgow between the time of 1950 and 1980. I'm a big fan of using film photography in my work and plan to incorporate it into both my process and enquiry and visual language modules. Marzaroli is one of my biggest inspirations ever since I saw his work a few years ago. I enjoy the way Marazoli displays Glasgow with black and white film photography. He does a great job of portraying glasgow life by capturing many different aspects of the city such as the people, the architecture and the public transport.

Map development
I decided to make a larger map using Scottish and English maps tied together by red string. One of these maps is only using Scottish places the other using English maps. I used red string to tie them together this portrays their detachment from each other yet still being connected. A lot of loss in Scottish culture is to do with England, many Scottish people don't identify as British yet we are still connected to England both physically and politically.

Cultural Research - Kneecap
Kneecap are an Irish rap group from Belfast composed of 3 men who go by the names, Mo Chara, Moglai Bap, and DJ Próvaí. The trio is well known for merging Irish and English within their lyrics along with using satire to bring attention some serious issues in a funny and sometimes absurd light. Their use of Irish in their lyrics is very powerful as it is seen to be a dying language. Despite having some backlash from the law and fellow Irish speakers for their use of drugs and inappropriate lyrics, they have been extremely important in encouraging the learning of the Irish language. I recently saw their movie in the cinema detailing their lives and how they got to where they are today. I really enjoyed how the film portrayed serious issues (such as mental health, the Irish/British divide, and conflict within the north of Ireland) whilst still making it funny and engaging. This film got me thinking about my own relationship with Scotland, Scottish traditions, and Gàidhlig. I feel somewhat disconnected from the culture of this country despite growing up here. This has lead me to explore alienation I feel within not knowing my country's language or traditions.

Digital development of prints
I took my prints and used photoshop to make them more clear. I then copied them to create a repetitive text to really bring attention to the word.
