honestly i think menhera sucks as a subgenre. why do we have a specific genre that literally encourages both bandomen and young fans to hurt themselves in a variety of ways, if not just by digging their heels into their mental illness. i am all for processing emotions and mental illness through music, but maybe bands could just do that as a part of a different subgenre instead of Mental Illness Self Harm Extravaganza. itās especially weird to me since vkei is largely marketed towards teenage girls and young women
*stands here with hiro as our pfp*
Honestly Iām going to have to disagree with you. I feel like, to view menhera as a āmental illness self harm extravaganzaā or that itās just there to encourage people to hurt themselves is a huge disservice. Iām a huge fan of
the menhera genre for many reasons, but I think itās a tad bit misinformed to view it as these things. Visual kei has always been a counter culture movement. One thing that many of the darker genres do is bring light to the ugly aspects of society, through disturbing imagery and themes in the music. Often times, being disturbed is the point, bringing light to something uncomfortable that society tends to push aside as a ātabooā or try to ignore despite it being a real issue (which Japan is known to do when it comes to mental health) is often the very point. Menhera is not for everyone, and I would not reccomend it to someone who is easily influenced or easily triggered. But as someone who enjoys menhera and relates to many issues depicted in the genre, I feel cathartic when these issues are, essentially, being displayed loudly and in a way thatās not easy to ignore. Of course, I donāt condone people ever hurting themselves, not even for their art. But speaking strictly on the point and the music (rather than any individual artistās behavior or actions), I find it is like venting. Music that includes these themes and lyrics that encapsulates these difficult emotions, the ugly side of mental illness, can make us feel seen. Thatās why I personally love menhera and think that, while I understand people can be disturbed by things, I feel like the hate for it stems from a lack of understanding on the value of darker topics being depicted and how itās not necessarily going to cause a negative effect just because you may find it disturbing.

I feel like you have a misunderstanding of menhera kei as a whole. Itās not just some guys self harming but itās very clearly them singing about their frustrations about mental health. You canāt treat vkei bands like celebrities theyāre just guys making songs and vkei is about being grotesque. Especially a lot of the darker genres as this one. As mod š said, this is counter culture. This is meant to be vulgar about their feelings without holding back. If you actually read the lyrics itās more than self harming just because. Itās a critique on society and dark emotions. There are lots of people who feel alone and relate very heavily to the lyrics. Do I want these artists to hurt themselves? Of course not but they are not mentally perfect either. Theyāre all struggling and people relate to that. Would you tell someone whoās self harming theyāre glorifying it by simply talking about it? I would hope not. Talking about and showing it graphically doesnāt make it bad. Youāre just upset that itās shown without censoring themselves. Many donāt even hurt themself and just talk about it graphically which isnāt a problem in the first place.

excited to see this!! small suggestion: you may want to put āminors dniā either above the cut in your pinned post or in the description. i feel like the majority of vkei fans here are minors (or at least ones who are currently active) and i think itās very likely that they wouldnāt bother hitting the read more before submitting/interacting
Thank you for the suggestion, I went ahead and edited our pinned post. Though I canāt help but find it a tad bit irksome that people wouldnāt read the rules after itās explicitly stated to read them before sending things in š not your fault or anything anon, I know people on the internet are like that, but itās always been a bit of a pet peeve of mine.
