Santorini, being an exceptionally rocky island, offers plenty of scope for scuba diving in its clear warm waters. Several international diving clubs rank Santorini as one of their favourite Greek islands for scuba diving. You don't have to bring your own scuba diving equipment, as there are dive centres on the island that have everything you need. Diving is done from dive-boats that crisscross the Caldera basin. Islands Near Santorini
A must for any visitor to Santorini is a boat trip inside the Caldera and around the volcanic islands within. Several well-appointed masted yachts leave a couple of times a day from Athinios or the Old Port for an unforgettable six-hour trip. The first stop is usually Nea Kammeni, which offers a chance to climb up to the active volcano crater which last growled as recently as 1956. Then the boat proceeds around the blackened northern side to Palea Kammeni, where you can jump overboard for a brief swim in the warm and shallow water. A sumptuous buffet meal accompanies the next leg to Thirasia, where the boat languishes until sunset, when it's time to sail to a point off Ia to see the legendary Santorini sunset. After that, it's a leisurely sail back to port, with the winking lights of Oia, Imerovigli and Fira far above lighting the way over the dark water. The sea is almost always calm, so even the most nervous sailor is assured of a rewarding and relaxing experience. About Fira
Fira, the main community on Santorini, is fairly easy to get around on foot, as it's mostly concentrated just below the rim of the highest point of the main cliff, about 300 metres above the sea. Of course, the most spectacular part of Fira is centered around the view, and that is where the poshest shops, bars and restaurants are concentrated. Just ten minutes' stroll on the main path brings you to the terminus of the cable car that carries you down to the Old Port below. It's either that or ride a donkey, as walking up and down is only for the very athletic. That said, though, the path carries on northwards, beyond the limits of Fira, always with the view of the Caldera -- or volcano crater -- on the left. It rounds the spurs of the mountain at Imerovigli, carrying on to Oia, which an intrepid hiker can get to in about two hours.
