I need to do this across all of my blogs. This depressive episode is really kicking my butt, and it’s making it really hard to write, much less do anything else I enjoy. I’ve also been letting my self-care, and care for my apartment, go by the wayside, so that needs to change.I know I just started writing on a couple of these blogs. While I do want to keep writing, I can’t force it. I’ll be back eventually. Just need to get my head and heart sorted out.

I’ll check in from time to time, and I may post a reply here and there if I’m up to it, but, otherwise, please hold everything for me. Yes, that includes asks and such. Thank you.

Before becoming one, actually! She wouldn’t trust anyone with a needle close to her afterward.

Where did it come from? As a child, Martel liked being outside. Yes, part of that was to escape her biological family, but she also genuinely liked getting her hands dirty. She was one of the children who tried to befriend a lot of wildlife, which ended up being a lot of snakes. Honestly, she thought they were neat creatures, and they became her favorite animals.

So, what do rebellious women who want to give their families the middle finger do? Join the military and get a tattoo. She didn’t get it with a deep purpose in mind other than “I like snakes.” It also worked as a way to ward off the hyper-masculinity that permeated the Amestrian military. Her fellow soldiers saw the tattoo as a warning: she wasn’t the type of woman one could easily have their way with. Like a snake, she’d bite back.

Becoming a chimera with snake DNA was not fate. The scientists at the Fifth Laboratory didn’t pick the DNA for each chimera at random. They made calculated decisions as to what would work best for different types of soldiers. Given Martel’s background as an intelligence officer who often fought close-range, a snake worked well to maximize her strength. The tattoo was just a bonus.

Blankets.

Snakes are cold-blooded creatures and don’t do well in the cold. During the winter months, Martel does not go outside. She’ll find the warmest spot possible, and she’ll camp out there with her blanket nest until winter is over. Giving her blankets, or other things that help keep her warm, is appreciated not only by her, but the other members of the Devil’s Nest family as well. They’re used to her stealing their blankets, socks, sweaters, and whatnot---eventually, she gives them back by the time spring rolls around.

Winter’s rough on her, but giving her a blanket, especially soft ones, will make her happy.

Don’t touch her without asking, and respect her when she says no.

For as long as she was in the Fifth Laboratory, Martel didn’t have much bodily autonomy. Scientists touched her without her consent for years, and a lot of it hurt. As such, she still shies away from physical contact, even simple acts like shaking hands. She has her personal space, her three foot bubble that people need to stay outside of, and respecting that is incredibly important.

Touching her without asking first will lead her to believe that you can’t be trusted. Asking first, though, means you respect her boundaries, and that goes a long way into building trust with her.

Make eye contact with her or otherwise show you’re paying attention when she talks.

Even before she became a chimera, Martel grew accustomed to people talking over her or tuning her out simply because she was a girl. Her biological family did this as well, so she learned how to tell when someone wasn’t listening. Eye contact to her is important since it shows you’re not afraid to look at her, and you’re focusing on her instead of yourself or someone else. It’s also a way for her to figure out if you’re lying to her.

Though, she understands eye contact isn’t always easy for others. After she got out of the Fifth Laboratory, she struggled to look anyone in the eye for a while. The eyes of the scientists who worked on her and the others were all she saw. It took a long time before she could gain even some of her old confidence back, so she won’t hold it against someone if they can’t make steady eye contact. Just actively engage in conversation with her, and it’s fine.

Respect her Devil’s Nest family. That will always come first to her.

Martel is incredibly protective of the people she cares about, especially when it comes to Bido, Dolcetto, and Roa. She’s used to people treating her and the rest of the chimera like lab rats and less than human, and she can’t stand it. They’re people too, and that means they should get at least a modicum of human decency.

Treat her friends like shit? Like hell she’ll even let you get close to her. Be genuinely kind to her friends? Yeah, she’ll give you a chance. Generally, she prefers to observe someone from afar before she even talks to them, so treat her family well.
