You can look yours up at
#$23/hour here#which is insane to think about in both directions for me#because one: i was probably 15 years into my own career before i made that much#and two: since i know what utilities and rent and other bills are like right now#i can't imagine trying to live alone on that or less now#inflation is a godsdamned crime#and i am forever thankful that my career took the path it did at the time it did#even accounting for the Trauma(tm)

What was your obscure chatroom/forum that you used before social media? Don’t say Gaia Online or Club Penguin. I’m talking obscure.
#i spent so much time on the AOL winter sports boards#i was the official host of their figure skating chat#for several years in the late 90s#those boards are how i ended up in minnesota actually

I kinda want to do a poll, but I'm not sure how to explain what I mean. I'll give a shot, though.
Talked to my cousin/longtime BFF yesterday, and we had the same conversation/complaint that we've been having for decades now. We grew up in the same city, but both of us moved away in very early adulthood. And both of us realized, when we went back home to visit, that almost no one had any interest in hearing what was going on outside of their little community. They didn't care about what we were doing in our new cities/states, they didn't ask questions, they gave us confused and sometimes disparaging looks when we tried to talk about our lives. It's soul-crushing for a young person. I gave up trying many years before my family was all gone, but she continues to try and hope and get frustrated. (This is a pattern in both of our lives - I'm much more likely to say 'fuck it' and give up to try something new, while she's stubborn and focused as hell. Our respective lives definitely reflect this, in both good and bad ways for both of us.)
The personal joke/coping mechanism between the two of us is that it's a weird "[state] thing," because we both feel like people are a lot more curious and open in our new homes - but that could also just be confirmation bias, based on who we choose to spend time with. We built our own communities here, but back in our home city, it's the same people we were talking to back in the 90s. So that probably plays a big part of it too.
Anyway. So here's the poll I want to do. Please answer if:
You moved away from home and live in a different city/state/region/country now.
You continue to talk to family or old friends in your original home.
#don't know if this will get many answers#but i'm curious all the same#i honestly don't know whether this is a universal thing#or if it's specific to regions or types of communities#or some other cause that i haven't thought of#taken out of the personal soul-crushing context#it's a fascinating sociology/psychology question#about whether leaving the nest results in increased tribalism in the original home#or if it broadens the community at all#idk

Look me straight in the eyes and tell me your current music taste isn’t what your father played in the car when you were a kid.
#i'm a yes to a certain extent#my love of big band is definitely from my dad#who played louis armstrong and ella fitzgerald in the car#and there are a certain number of 80s country songs that make me feel nostalgic because of him too#but there were always lots of things i loved that he had no use for#so shrug

"For anyone who doesn't know what a Bacon number is, it is the degrees of separation a person is from the actor Kevin Bacon. Kevin Bacon's number is 0, Someone who has worked with him directly's number is 1. Someone who has worked with that person's number is 2, and so on. (Here is a link to the Wikapedia page on Bacon numbers for more details.)
If you don't know your Bacon number, you can check it on The Oracle of Bacon by putting in the name of the most famous person that you or someone you know have met"
(Submitted by @lucybianchi)
This poll was submitted to us and we simply posted it so people could vote and discuss their opinions on the matter. If you’d like for us to ask the internet a question for you, feel free to drop the poll of your choice in our inbox and we’ll post them anonymously (for more info, please check our pinned post).

One of my favorite things is modern adaptations that leave people with the same careers they had in the original material, because unless you’re a cop or a doctor that practically never happens.
Irene Adler’s an opera singer. We still have those! They don’t have the same subtext exactly, but nothing is going to because we aren’t the Victorians. She could continue to be an opera singer. I have never seen this happen.
Jonathan Harker can still be in real estate. That’s a job people have. A modern story that still involves Dracula contacting his firm to help him purchase property sounds amazing actually.
#listen as a twin cities resident#now i just want jonathan harker in the awful giant arms kris lindahl ads#that's gonna be the version of dracula in my head now
