This evening I was asked why I let go of submissions during a particular roll. “You had the bow & arrow, the armbar, why did you keep letting go?, why didn’t you just finish?” I responded and said “you know, for the same reason you would choose not to crush me if we were rolling” This teammate is a heavyweight. I explained that there are areas in my top game where I fail, so I’m focusing on improving those positions while I can, because sparring with a coloured belt with a different skill set would mean that I’d have no choice but to play a different kind of game. He laughed and knew exactly what I meant. “Say no more” In my experience adjusting your intensity with people you train with can contribute to the bond you develop with that person on the mats. They are able to move and be creative and play. They can explore positions and feel if their movement under stress is being executed well or if it needs correction. A trust is soon formed and you’re able to ramp up the intensity and roll harder with your training partner(s). In my normal life where I’m not being strangled I make these choices too. Sometimes, I allow a negative thought (a MF a thing) to consume me and sometimes it wins. Today’s little conversation on the mats just reinforced that, sometimes, you just have to let shit go.
