no offence, but i don't like poetry

I'm a high school English teacher.

If I took offence every time I was told by someone that they don't like poetry, I'd never get anything done. 😂

Unfortunately for my students, not liking poetry doesn't get them out of studying it or doing their work- as much as they try.

But you are absolutely free to not read it, or to read it and not enjoy it.

I'm teaching classic poetry this term to my students, and their assessment is to choose three of the poems we study and "reimagine" them- ie. use them as inspiration for their own poem.

The idea is, how well do they understand the themes, structure and techniques these poets used and can they demonstrate this by using them in their own writing?

If I can, especially with assessments that involve more creativity, I like to try and do a mock-up of the tasks. This gives the kids an idea of what to do and what it could- should- look like. However, I always tweak it somewhat so they can't just copy mine.

For example, with this task, I chose three classic poems to reimagine that we don't study, but are somewhat similar. We study Shakespeare sonnets, I chose an Italian style sonnet. We look at Poe's The Raven, I chose another Poe poem, etc.

For my Poe poem, I obviously did Annabel Lee- as some of you may know, this has been my favourite poem for many, many years. And when I needed some tragic love story to use as inspiration, I thought of Until the End of Time and the story of Alivia and Kole.

So... I wrote a poem. For the first time in years.

Is it as good as Annabel Lee? God, no.

Is it terrible? I don't think so. There's at least some lines in there that I think are pretty good.

So my question is... should I post it?? Would anyone want to read it?

Me, finally posting a new Fiyeraba in 2025? It's more likely than you think.

Summary:

Fiyero runs into his ex. The one who broke his heart. The one who’s now married. And very, very pregnant.

2024 was not my best year.

Health issues, both with myself and within my family; my mental health really took a hit in the last quarter of the year; supporting my best friend through a lot of drama; and managing the financial stress we're all going through right now.

This always creates a catch 22 situtation, where I get blocked on writing and then not writing stresses me out more.

So I'm really glad that I was able to get out the few things I did in 2024, and grateful that people enjoyed reading them.

Here's hoping 2025 is going to be an improvement! I have so many plans and ideas and WIPs, and I'm really excited to be able to hopefully get them out (once I finish this multichap fic I'm currently writing for another fandom).

Chartreuse Court was an apartment block in the Emerald City that housed twelve apartments over three floors; marketed as being a space “where your urban adventure begins” and “a community of like-minded individuals who value convenience, style, and an unbeatable location.”

Just updated the Masterlist with fics I've written in the past year; because if there's anything I excel at, it's doing an in-depth project and then forgetting to keep it current.

But people seem to be actually finding it (hi and thank you), so it reminded me that... oh yes, I have written things more recently than this list.

2024 Birthday Oneshot

It seems that all of Elphaba's life has led to this.

And now, with Nessa and Fiyero gone; her friendship with Glinda beyond repair; and Morrible and the Wizard openly calling for her death; Elphaba has nothing left to lose.

They were scared of the Wicked Witch of the West? They should be.

Birthday oneshot for 2024 that is being posted technically just after my birthday, but I figure it's still Thursday in some parts of the world, so close enough. I've been in a writing slump for a few months due to real life things, and I've been wrestling with this all week. Not quite sure I captured what I was going for, but it's done and so I'm taking it as a win.

Why am I like this?

My annual birthday oneshot that is being worked on atm is very sort of... 'no plot, just vibes' so far. It's just like random paragraphs inspired by certain lines from a certain song, and I don't know how I'm going to weave them all together.

Given that I've recently been teaching vignettes to my students the last few weeks, I'm thinking this may be the way to go... ugh.
