For Easter 2024 we play, by J.S. BACH (1685-1750), the final chorus of the CANTATA BWV 158, one of the most moving messages left by BACH for the Easter period. This cantata BWV 158 uses the fifth verse of Martin Luther's chorale, in a chorus of the fourth and last movement of the cantata. The hymn "Christ lag in Todesbanden" celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus, with particular reference to the struggle between LIFE and DEATH. J.S. BACH also composed a cantata BWV 4 entitled "Christ lag in Todesbanden"; it was performed for the first time at Easter 1707 (April 24). The second piece chosen for this Easter 2024 is Trio 1 from Opus 38 by composer Matthäus Koch (1862-1933). This composer was born near Stuttgart where he studied the organ from 1888. He became organist and choirmaster at the Friedenskirche in Stuttgart. He composed sacred choral music, organ (or piano) pieces for accompaniments in churches. NOTE: We feel that this BACH chorale is often played too FAST on the piano or organ. This music, if it actually refers to the Resurrection, it recalls, by its title, that Christ "was seized by the bonds of death" (a clear allusion to Good Friday), hence the need, in our eyes, to play "full play", yes, but at a rhythm that is still a little restrained and deep).
