WEEK 14 Reflection
In the beginning of the semester my perception of Rhetoric was the components of speech and the styles of your own writing. Now my understanding of Rhetoric has expanded by allowing me to understand that “styles of writing” does not only have to be on paper. Rhetoric is the way your writing is expressed, explained and all the components or literature are put together. Multimodality is about how you can share your writing in different ways such as through pictures, videos, writing, graphics or all of those options together. Using multimodality throughout the assignments of this class helped me understand that it is ok to be creative with your writing because that allows you to express yourself more and allowed you to be more detailed. The method of multimodality did influence my perception of Rhetoric because when it comes to rhetoric a big factor that that it includes is Ethos, Pathos and Logos, and for me it allowed me to get a better visual of how I could explain that in my writing. I personally learn and understand better when there are visual that show what is going on and I believe that by using multimodality, it helps me understand what I am writing and what I should include so that the reader that get the “whole picture”.
https://victoriaaavila.tumblr.com/post/156113742971/introduction-and-course-topic On this post, I believed I did a good job because I cut straight to the chase. Although it was the first one, I wrote everything that was needed and the GIFs I used also describe me.
https://victoriaaavila.tumblr.com/post/156655466716/w3-reading-response On this next post I believe it is one of my top posts because I gave a lot of detailed into my understanding of the video that was assigned.
https://victoriaaavila.tumblr.com/post/157282015366/w5-reading-response-topic-proposal My last post that I believed I did good on was Week 5′s reading response and my topic proposal. I structured my answers the questions that are required to be answered and they were detailed and answered best to my ability.
Although I never really used Tumblr before, my experience when using it for the class was easy to understand because it’s similar to other social media that I use. using Tumblr for the reading response was a fun way to allow us to escape frim blackboard for a bit. I wouldn’t have minded using blackboard either but I like the idea of letting us do “homework” on a social media website because it allowed to have fun with the GIFs and pictures. What I liked most about using Tumblr was that it didn’t really feel like I was doing homework since I was on a social media website, so that was fun. The only thing I didn’t like about using Tumblr was that sometimes I would forget to submit the permalink and when i remembered it would be too late although its shown when I posted it. So sometimes that would catch me off guard, thinking i was done when I wasn’t. Honestly, no, I would not change my Tumblr experience because I thought it was an effective way of allowing students to express themselves and have fun with their responses. Also, once again, you get a break from blackboard and you get to laugh at funny GIFs.

WEEK 13
The main themes and ideas of this article is to inform readers about using methods of multimodal academic literacies in teaching to improve learning opportunities. This article is persuading audiences to adapt to this new way of teaching. This article connects to my major and discipline simply because it is introducing the effects of multimodal literacy. This method does relate to educational interests. This helps me gain a robust understanding of my discipline because maybe multimodal texts are more effective than traditional texts. It can change the way how I present concepts to audiences.
I used this GIF because that was my reaction to learning more about multimodal.

WEEK 12
Formats and modalities writers use to convey arguments have a deep impact on how their arguments are shaped because it allows them to give off the message they want the reader to understand. According to Yancey, the relationship between literacy and rhetoric is that they are both used at the same time and there is not one without the other. Literacy is the message and rhetoric is the feeling of the message.
I did find changes in my perception of literacy, before i thought literacy was just writing now i know there is a message in writing, graphics, images, etc.
I chose this GIF because it was very overwhelming reading both readings. there was a lot of information.

Your response is very detailed. I enjoy how you give examples and use proper word usage but your GIFs are related to the readings and real life. Nice work.
Week 12- reading response
There is no doubt that formats and modalities are a crucial part when shaping arguments. As writers develop their arguments and structure them, they must also attend to maters of design. It help determine how they will present their information whether it be through an exam paper, letter, articles or an email. There are ample modalities which primarily fuse writting, visuals, and verbal modes of communication, which offer a large array of possible formats for arguments. It may also depend on your discipline and or context your working with. Take for example, when writing an argument in the form of a letter , one must often distill their ideas in to a brief format. The way you use your format and modalities will determine how effective your presentation will be.
Yancy’s article supplements the content from the chapter greatly by expressing the models of composition. She breaks each key expression to allow us to thoroughly comprehend how she is tying her previous and future information. For, example she talks about circulation of composition, canon of rhetoric and deicity of technology. Much like chapter 10, Yancy outlines and exemplifies the different types each section has and how it impacts our argument.
According to Yancy, literacy and rhetoric are often treated like discrete entities when in fact they are interrelated. The rhetoric can intersect and through that interaction they contribute to new exigencies for inventions, arrangements, representation, and identity. “ or they change what is possible.” They compose and delivery which a critical role.
I definitely find changes in my perception of literacy. It’s not just you basic ability to just read and write, its far much more than that. There are ample ways that literacy is tied through everything. There a lot that goes into writing. We have to choose what best medium and delivery is effective for communication , then we have to create and share those different communication pieces into a media and audience. Both these reading show to prove that literacy is broad in every aspect.
Yancy and chapter 10 impacted my knowledge of multiliteracies/literacy by providing several examples and going into depth about each. We are all used to understanding the simple meaning with literacy but these readings gave us a full picture that is much more than that. Yancy talked about the transformation of literacy because technology changes and the circulation of composition which I was completely oblivious about. Chapter 10 gave me a full insight about modalities and formats.
all the gifs pertain to each section. for example the 2nd gif is illustrating a connection like rhetoric and literacy have.

Jasmine I like how you structured your summary and through your paragraphs, it made the readings much easier to understand and you gave a great reflection on what was needed.
Week 12 Reading Response
Crafting effective arguments through the use of visual representations as well as approaching / constructing different types of arguments is important to writers envision their arguements as well as to what impact they come to create. The choice of arguement is crucial to writers because depending on their methos such as verbal arguments, academic presentations, elevator speeches, PSA, films and videos just to name a few, their arguement could take different stances. For example, the incorporation of modalities will add onto their arguemnt in a way that’ll aid their audience onto invisioning them. Lastly, the importane of design in an arguement is vital to the impact the writer is aiming to create since ones claim will come to serve as an aid to either enforce or reduce the message you are trying to bring forth to your audience. In addition, the selectiveness of ones modalities can come to raise debate on a one sided issue which then again comes back to last weeks chapter regarding arguements.
Yancys article adressed how literacy and rheoric are modes that go hand in hand in a way that within every type of literacy, theres a form of rhetoric that follows along with it. In addition to Chapter 10, the use of rethoric aids the creation of an arguement by adding perspective onto the claims regardless of the discipline. With Yancys article and chapter 10, the importance of arguements, literacy and rethoric as a crafting method come to enhance how one may apprach an arguemt in the near future. With this in mind, literature comes to be seen as subject that takes upon numerous tasks in every situation one takes part in. For example, literature is not simply siting down and reading, literature carries an abundance of responsibilities and tasks that may not be looked upon unless one takes the time to anaylze, but they are still present.
Furthermore, this came to add onto my perception on literacy because it just goes onto reinforcing how literature contains more than just a book or stategies. Literacy consists of anything that has to do with language, crafting language, crafting arguements, how and why things should and can be approached in order to create a specific effect and or message. This just comes to amaze me how it may seem as a different section to something else but in fact it is all part of one inmense subject that is misconcepted as “ oh just reading”. Lastly, Yancys article and chapter 10 enhance my knowledge on multiliteracy and literacies by explaining how literacy comes in many forms and modes that in the end are all part of one.
The first gif shows how the lack of modalities can sometimes make an arguemnt dull as well as not properly designing them. The second gif demonstrates how literacy in itself is all connected and the 3rd gif is like an “ahhh” reaction in my brain.

Reading Response W11
The main ideas for chapter 8: Framing Arguments in Writing in Transit were the ideas of what people think are appropriate arguments vs. what is argument. This chapter also explains the real purpose of an argument. This chapter connects with my major because in the field of Education you are expected to teaching English and writing skills, so i will be dealing with arguments in person and through writing throughout my career. The reading helped me gain a more robust understanding of a concept within my own discipline by showing me that when dealing with argument there must be facts and research to support your opinion. With that being said, this reading ties into the AVA Project by explaining to us that we must have research to back up our opinion or our “argument”.
I chose this GIF because coral reef destruction is my team’s topic!

AVA Topic Proposal
Group: Daniel Rey
Two Topic Preferences: Our two topic preferences would be film documentary or research poster.
Issue/ Problem: The community problem we would like to address is cyber bullying and how it effects the victims and attackers mentally and physically.
Purpose: The purpose of this AVA project to help create awareness of what cyber bullying can cause and also to prevent suicide, school, out of school fights, and low self-esteem. Although the awareness has been spread, we believe that more can be done. The audience for this AVA are males and females ages 10-20
Solution: A solution we have to this community problem is every time you log into or open up a type of social media website, the first thing a person will see is a banner saying something like, “think before you type. words can kill”. In addition to that, the solution would also be to raise awareness and that will help deter people from doing it in the future.

Week 7
For week 7′s reading, we focused on the ideas and correct ways to write summary and how to shape an effective synthesis. Chapter 5 explains how and when a summary should include clear ideas, address points from the texts, the tone of your summary and how to properly manifest the purpose. It also gives the different kinds of summaries that are used for different assignments. Chapter 6 explains how a write can get a clear and effective synthesis. It shows how ideas relate to each other, what the writer expects for you to learn how of it, stays on topic and organized, and explains each idea or concept truthfully.
This week’s readings relate to my major because I still have a long route to go until I actually finish and earn my degree, so that leads to me taking lots of English, math, and history classes especially since i want to be a teacher and in those classes I will have to summarize and use synthesis everyday! When i become a teacher, I will have to teach how to summarize and how properly synthesis, throughout different examples everyday as well.
The reading helps me gain more robust understanding of a concept within my own discipline by explaining that with a clear synthesis and with good strategies on writing a well thought out summary will help me become more organized and well make my essay stronger and better in every way.
Chapter 5 and 6 help me understand the Lit review more by pointing out the major keys of writing the proper summary. It also helped me understand that with a synthesis that has facts and isn’t just biased. It allowed me to learn that it is important for your essay to be organized because it isn’t it can truly hurt what your are trying to persuade, inform or just address.
I chose this GIF because this is how i feel knowing that we are almost done with the Lit Review and that spring break is almost here. That GIF also represents how I feel once I am done with my Reading Response.

Week 6 Reading
I believe some people can focus more than others when it come to reading. For example, with myself, it is pretty tough to grasp what i’m reading on the first try. So that leads to me reading the passage about 3 times until I finally understand what is it saying. Also, when I read I need to do it in a quiet place because i tend to get easily distracted. My reading process could be more effective if I stayed focused the entire time and if I kept my mind on what I am reading only. I believe I have gone through some obstacles with my reading process but I know of ways that they can be fixed, which included, reading in a quiet place, alone, without my phone.
When reading content I really try to figure out what the passage means and how i connect to it in order for me to understand it more. Being in RWS 1301 and now 1302, I have learned to and have gotten used to understanding how pathos, logos, and ethos (Rhetorical Triangle pg.81) is used in what I read. This helps me gain a bigger and better picture of what I am reading.
Chapter 4 and the CRAAP video helped me gain strategies for the Lit Review assignment by helping me understand the types of articles I should be looking for and if they are reliable and how to tell if they are reliable. Also, it has helped me by showing me that it is very important to be clear with with the type of questions you are asking yourself with writing and how to properly explain your answer.

Daniel, your future career will have you constantly asking yourself different questions especially since you will be dealing with change due to technology, media, and just current events. Therefore, i think your Lit topic goes perfect with your major.
Week 5
In this weeks reading, the concept was to ask questions that mean something. Not only does this help with our own understanding of the subject, but it also helps to develop skills that will help us in the future. Asking meaningful questions can lead to a stronger understanding of any concept, and it can help focus on minor details that are often overlooked. This practice of asking questions is important to my major because it helps me look more in depth into something that will lead to more information. Multi media journalism is essentially gathering information and presenting it to others in different forms, so asking important questions about any subject will mean stronger content.
As for a lit review question, the topic I chose is similar to my genre analysis topic. I want to talk about how technology is taking over our jobs, our lives, and even our reality (virtual reality). Some questions i am thinking about posing is if “at the rate technology is evolving, can it lead to takeover of jobs for teenagers who are living in urban, large cities.” I chose the gif above because it engulfs the concept of the reading, which is to asking meaningful questions. The gif below basically represents my topic of how technology is taking over a lot of aspects of our life.

I can understand how in your major you will constantly be asking yourself different kinds of questions. In high school I was part of a marketing club and i understand that it can be tough answering all the you have to make an item or event successful. I also think you found a very interesting lit topic. Not only because i really enjoy make up but because its hard now a days to find a girl that isn’t interested in make up.
Reading Response Week 5
In this week’s reading “Posing Meaningful Questions” chapter 3 from “Writing in Transit”, discussed the importance of developing questions to better understand your discipline or topic. Thus forming these questions will help better your research as well as to transmit your message and or content in a more effective and fluent way. We’ve been taught that there is no such thing as a bad questions, but in this case there are bad questions. In order to have a better research questions can be as simple or complicated, but in order to have that effective research those questions must be able to branch out and arise many more questions within that topic.
This reading has so many connections with my major because in Marketing you are constantly asking questions and doing research. Whether its looking at certain places to sell a new product well there is so much research to do before determining if your product will be successful in that one place or not. Or as simple as who your target market will be. This reading also helps me understand what the LIt Review will be about. Not only will we be expanding on what we did for the Genre Analysis, but not we are going to ask ourselves why? We will be taking the information we know and convert them into questions to have a better understanding of our topic and send our message in a more effective way.
My Lit Review topic proposal is about the false advertisement in the makeup industry. On how and why companies don’t always tell the truth about a product, because most of the time they use celebrities to hide the truth.
I used my first GIF because Albert Einstein is a good example of how far asking questions can take you. As for my second one because we can write something beautiful but at the end it may not be meaningful and we end up starting all over again just like writing a research paper.

W5 Reading Response & Topic Proposal
The main ideas and themes for Assignment 3: Literature Review/Research Report were why it is it important to write a literature review, what elements you need to complete and make a successful literature review. It also explains which topic would be best for you to pick and how important it is to do lots of research.
The content from the reading connects to my major and future career by helping me understand that no matter if I write an essay for school, or explain myself in person to others around me, it is important to have reliable evidence, not only will it prove your point, but it will make you more knowledgeable.
The reading helped me understand the Lit Review more in every way. In the reading it explained exactly what the Lit Review needed, how it should be listed, why the assignment is important, and how to find the information you need to complete your assignment.
While analyzing the ready on the RWS Handbook, it prompt me ask, “does my topic relate to my major?”, “is my topic a broad question?” and “can I get reliable sources to help answer the question i have for my topic?.”
I chose this GIF because i’m going to have to do a lot of research and reading to learn more about my topic, so that girl is going to be me. Lol.
My topic proposal is the same as before, Standardized Testing in Public Schools.

Hi Daniel, I think it is very unique that you want to be a multimedia journalist and because of that you are going to be able to analyze a picture or see and share your own honest thoughts on it. Also, the last GIF that you used is a great visual of how our mind and words work.
Audience analysis
The article is mainly about examining the purpose of writing, and analyzing the audience so you are able to create stronger text. According to the Merriam webster dictionary, to analyzing something means to “examine methodically and in detail the constitution or structure of.” That is not the only definition, and there are various ways to break down a genre and analyze it.
Being that my major is multimedia journalism, the concept of analyzing a text and breaking it down ties in strongly with that. There is a lot of studying audience behaviors, and constantly evolving to put out the strongest possible content, whether it be a video, or blog, or article etc. The reading helps me have a clearer understanding that the process of analyzing is important when studying visual, textual, and aural data. The reading also helps me with the current assignment of the genre analysis because it opened new ways of looking at a genre, which helps me get into more descriptive detail.
I used the gif below because I feel that when you are analyzing a genre, you are taking a much deeper look at what exactly the audience is perceiving, and what the author meant to say and so on. You are essentially unraveling your own mind and thoughts so that you have a better understanding of what it is you are trying to say.

Angela, I agree that with you on that. We do have to analyze everyday. By analyzing we make choices and we make choices from the time we go to sleep to the time we wake up. Also, if you’re going to be diagnosing patients I bet you are going to have to be extra careful with analyzing before you “ draw your conclusion”. Good luck with that.
Week 3 Reading Response
This weeks reading from Writing In Transit chapter 7, focuses on analysis. It went deeply into the understanding of what exactly analysis is and how it is used in the writing process and in our everyday lives. The best way i was able to understand the term was that it examines data in a very specific way in order to get a result of what is being analyzed. There are many ways something can be analyzed and many different questions to be asked when analyzing. A quote from this chapter that stood out to me was, “Analysis forms the basis of some of the most engaged debates and disagreements.” If you don’t think we use analysis in our everyday life decisions then think again. The first thing that popped into mind when reading this quote was the Presidential Election that has just occurred. Each American who voted had to analyze each candidate and see who they think would be best for Americas president. This proves how important analysis is because this was a big decision made when casting each vote.
The way that the analysis connects to my major is when diagnosing a patient occurs or when analyzing different diseases to get more information on them. We use analysis to “draw conclusions,” which is very important in the nursing field because you want to know exactly what you are diagnosing your patient with. You want to analyze each symptom the patient has in order to put all the information together and get one conclusion as to what might be wrong with the patient.
The reading is definitely going to help with upcoming assignments in this class because it shows the different types of data the academic writers analyze. These types are Visual, Aural, Tactile, Textual, and Quantitive. These will help with our genre analysis paper because it will give us a better understanding of what genre we choose to write about and what category it falls under.
The first gif i used was of Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton to give my explanation of how we use analysis in our everyday life. It shows both candidates in this election. The second picture i used was a doctor talking to his patient about his diagnosis which is why analysis is important in the nursing field. And the last gif i used represents me typing my genre analysis paper.

W3 Reading Response
In the video “What is Visual Rhetoric” it breaks down the meaning of visual rhetoric and the components that make it up. In the video, “Audience Analysis” it explains how to find which audience is targeted and how to figure that out.
Both of these videos connect to my major very much because since I will be working with kids, throughout my whole day I will have to use visuals of each lesson I give because children tend to learn and remember more when there are visual representations. Not only does Visual Rhetoric mean have to see things but it also means visual communication, which that just ties in with me teaching and explaining a visual. Next with audience analysis throughout my career, my audience will both children and their parents. It will be both children and their parents because what I will be teaching in the classroom to the children will most likely tend to go back and be repeated at home. So my will intentionally be the children, my students but will eventually go to their parents.
These videos helped me gain more of an understanding about my major by showing and explaining there has to be a specific item or picture or anything really and it will directed to a specific person.
Both videos helped me understand the genre analysis more by breaking it down more and showing the many parts to what a genre analysis needs and how it is identified.
I chose this gif because that would be how someone would look at you if you aren’t careful with the message you are trying to give or if you use the wrong type of visual rhetoric.

I can see hoe Marketing can have many different and specific genre that can go with it especially now with social media being a common thing that mostly everyone uses!
Reading Response Week 2
After reading the article “Emerging Personal Media Genres”, there were a couple of things that really resonated with me. First, when I previously thought about genres music would automatically pop into my head such as R&B, Hip-Hop, Soul, and Jazz. But now I see that this goes much deeper than the surface.
Genre seems to me that it is proportional to society and as society advances and become more complex so does genre with it. Furthermore, It seems to have not only expanded from music, but has extended it’s reach to movies, sports, TV, everyday small talk, a multitude of other sources, and has even transcended through very history itself adapting to the changes in time!
I admit this was an immense amount of content to absorb, and I am still processing this information, but I have made a correlation between genre and my major of Marketing. You see, just as there is a multitude of genres in this world same goes for marketing. The big categories include sales and advertising. Those can further be broken down into different kinds sub-divisions for example: advertising can include the use of billboards, social media, websites, etc. And as the world and society continues to advance, so to does the divisions under the Marketing umbrella.

I could very much agree with you on how the this article taught me that it is very important which genres you pick because it can be taken as a different message.
Reading Response: Week 2
The article “Emerging Personal Media Genres,” focuses on describing the great value of genre to enhance understanding of communication. It also explains the benefits of using the right genre in social media, and how many different types of genre are quickly expanding. This article has helped me understand how important it is to pick the right genre for the type of audience you have to have a stronger and clearer argument. However it is important to pay close attention to the specific genre you are trying to achieve and not mix it with another type, since some genres are very similar. The more you familiarize yourself with genres, it will facilitate communication. Although I didn’t fully understand a few points this argument was trying to make, found myself going back and forth reading the same paragraphs and looking up words I didn’t know, I look forward to discuss this article in class, and get a better understanding of it to help me with our Genre Analysis.
I found myself relating this article to my major by the foundations that can be found in nursing and in genres. For example, there is different types of jobs a nurse can be specifically assign to such as labor & delivery, emergency rooms, or perioperative. Even though nurses from different departments don’t share the same specialties, they all share the same foundation in ethics and education as well as the passion to help others. And that’s exactly how I view genres. All types share the same philosophy and aid in enhancing understanding, whether it is written, oral or visual. Both genres and nursing can also be put into a discourse community example. We can visualize how they share the same goal, and work together with other departments to succeed.
One quote that caught my attention in this article was: “Expectation can only be built through recognition, which requires some regulated process at repetition.”
Really thinking about this quote made me realize we all do this on a daily basis specially at school, since we spend lots of time studying and trying to have a better understanding on many subjects. I can even relate it to how I kept reading this article to try to understand it better. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!!!
