The Doctrine of the Divine Right of Kings in Richard II
By Laura Behrend, Globe Education researcher
‘The prince, in whom the sovereignty resteth, is to give account unto none, but to the immortal God alone. - Jean Bodin, Six Books of the Commonwealth (1606)
Images (left-right): Fig 1. Portrait of Richard II at Westminster Abbey (mid-1390s). Fig 2. First edition of The Tragedie of King Richard
What is the importance of the belief in divine justice in King Richard II? When it was first printed, in 1597, the play was called ‘The Tragedie of King Richard the Second.’ It was not until 1623 that Richard II was grouped with the history plays. What the word ‘Tragedie’ in the 1597 version’s title suggests is a particular focus, not primarily on the fate of a nation, but on the disastrous career of a fascinating, flawed individual. Shakespeare’s character firmly believes - as did the historical Richard II (1367-1400) - that kings derive their right to rule from God only. This conviction as well as the neglect and violation of his subjects’ needs and rights are what ultimately lead Shakespeare’s protagonist to his downfall.
‘We were not born to sue but to command.’ Act 1.1

Has Carmy ever smoked around Sydney?
It is interesting that Carmy smokes in front of Nat, Richie and Marcus but never Sydney. Why doesn’t he smoke in front of her? Carmy is probably too busy staring at Syd that he doesn’t have time to smoke, or maybe his need to smoke decreases as he is with someone who brings him total peace. If Syd ever asked Carmy for a cigarette, would he give it to her or would he go into protective mode and state all the reasons as to why she shouldn’t smoke?

Tentative Reflections - Jonerys Orgasmic October Event
-> Jonerys Modern AU
Day 5: “I’ve seen the way you look at me when you think I don’t notice” / Casual Nudity
A man was in the window across from her. He sat on his couch, dark curls hanging over a book he read down in his lap, but Dany was no fool. The couch faced the window completely; like she was his own personal show.
Or: Somehow, a really, really bad day results in a really, really unconventional window-neighbor relationship.
