Credence wakes up somewhere that isn’t his bed. Credence wakes up in the middle of a goddamned field.

There’s grass all around him, going on and on for miles; except for a large portion circling the place he’s crouched on.

Under his back, the soil is hard and blackened. No strand of grass will ever breach it again.

Credence falls three times before finally managing to get back onto his feet. He pukes his insides out after the second time, feeling his stomach pulse violently.

Muscle spasming, he sets off on the road home, which is carved in the back of his eyelids like some kind of arcane manuscript. The Obscurus’s black print.

Percival drags him inside and shuts the door behind, hands a whirlwind, analyzing every inch of Credence’s body.

“I had a nightmare,” Credence says, “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t apologize,” Percival is doing his best not to scream. Credence knows it’s out of worry and fear, he knows it, but there’s a part of his mind that tells him to run run run away before he can hurt you.

He doesn’t even realize he’s crying until Percival’s arms envelope him in a fierce hug. The weight of his tears becomes too much then, lowering Credence’s head to the crook of Percival’s neck.

“Shh, shh,” Percival let’s Credence cough and sob and slobber all over his shoulder, “It’s alright, it’s okay. That’s it, that’s it, get it all out. Good boy.”

Credence cries until his eyes burn, until his throat aches. The Obscurus has since retreated into him, but it feels as if it’s still there, nipping at Credence’s flesh. Tearing him apart from the insides.

“Just. Just promise me,” Percival says, against Credence’s mud-drenched hair, “Promise me you’ll always come back home?”

“Mmhmf,” Credence says.

That’s enough of an answer for the both of them.
