i love agnes montague as much as the next guy but i think we all need to remember that she kept her deceased father figure who she may or may not have burned to death's severed hand on a chain she wore as a belt around her waist for decades and love that part of her too. if you can't match her freak then why are you even here.

he’s essentially a living optic nerve. the tower is there to direct and stabilize the connection held in the pupil. when he’s in the panopticon he serves as both the center of the tether to reality and the closest thing the eye has to a mind.

he can fly, but as pupil, he isn’t affected by gravity so his wings and legs are vestigial. the furthest he can reach with his body is the floor of that room.

the archivists serve as a defense system because jon is basically a vital organ and fairly physically vulnerable. they’re very fast and can fly short distances but usually just cling to walls and crawl. they have about the same level of sentience as beholding itself (not much). jon can maneuver them as external limbs but when he isn’t, they kind of just run on eye-autopilot.

the official explanation of "in-universe, everything you hear is actually on the tapes except for the music" leaves a few explanations for where all the extra sound effects come from, ex. all the worm wriggling noises in statements about jane prentiss. option one is that it's beholding stuff, a person recites a story to tape and when you listen to it back the eye has gifted it with a little extra pizzazz. option two is that, in her role as a story spinner and for a lack of anything else to do, annabelle was hunkered down in hilltop road recording foley and painstakingly adding it to the recordings all by herself for years.
