I’ve been seeing a lot of Vast posts on my dash (which makes me really happy because I love the Vast as an entity) and I kinda want to take an opportunity to talk about an aspect of it I think is less discussed? If it could be considered ‘part of it’ or maybe part of another entity.

I want to talk about thunderstorms.

I’m scared of thunderstorms - like, legitimately afraid of them. I found that I could somewhat relate to what Mike Crew described in his statement, though I haven’t been struck by lightning - and I don’t know how much of his fear was a Vast thing or because of the Lichtenberg figure pursuing him (which was the Spiral iirc). It’s not really the lightning that scares me, personally. I know how lightning works - it’s like the physics experiment where you make electricity go between two separate plates, but bigger.

It’s everything else in a thunderstorm that scares me, and I think those things can link to the Vast because all of them have an element of something huge or all-encompassing.

The thunder is the biggest example. Thunder terrifies me. I can never tell where it’s coming from - from my perspective, it’s everywhere. I’m fully aware of why it occurs, I know it’s literally just a Big Sound, but I know that the moment I hear it, even just in the distance, I’m immediately on edge. In the summertime I have to listen out whenever a plane or helicopter flies overhead, or a motorcycle starts on a nearby road, because in certain conditions it sounds like thunder.

You get my point. Thunder is scary, and it’s scary because it’s big and loud, and it sounds like the sky is cracking.

The ‘warning signs’ of a storm can also stir that fear in me. The massive black clouds which fill the sky, the heavy rain that pounds down faster until it’s obscuring your view - in some cases, the choking humidity in the days preceding it. They’re all things which just feel massive, surrounding you until it’s nothing but the storm that’s slowly growing and coming towards you.

There might be elements of other entities like the Dark (the growing blackness during such storms) or the Spiral (lightning, Lichtenberg patterns) but to me these are all parts of the Vast.

I’m rambling. I’m not saying that storms are definitely Vast IRL (I’ve been scared of them for years, long before I knew about Magnus) but reflecting on the things about them that scare me, personally, just make me think that they must be a tool of this entity in the TMAverse.

I’m aware that not everyone is afraid of storms, but I’ve never thought that every entity must scare everyone on the same level. Not everyone is afraid of spiders, but we had statements of the Web from people such as Carlos Vittery and, hell, even Jon himself. The entities just have to scare the right people, in the right way, to sustain themselves. (Until the Fearpocalypse, of course.)

All the entities have multiple aspects to them, and I just think there’s more to this particular idea that can be explored. Feel free to share your own thoughts, or correct me on any mistakes here.
