while i do believe it would be perfectly in character for solas to stab varric just because he’s being annoying and trying to thwart him, i think that that scene combined with the immediate conversation about blood magic facilitating the mental connection between rook and solas suggests something deeper than that.

why would solas STAB varric with the MAGICAL LYRIUM ONCE-RED-LYRIUM-IDOL RITUAL DAGGER when he can, idk, turn Varric to stone without even looking at him like he does to the Viddasala? when he could blow him to pieces the way he did to Bianca just moments before???? when he could probably incapacitate him 5000 magical ways without lifting a finger??? and yet he stabs him? with a dagger? and you watch as blood spurts out of the wound??

and then 10 minutes later tells rook that their BLOOD at the RITUAL SITE, from some minor wound on the back of their head, allowed him to form a connection???? when the one truly bleeding out in a puddle was Varric??? when blood magic is apparently being used already by him to create the connection to rook (and notice how solas says, when accused, “I abhor blood magic” NOT “I didn’t use blood magic”!)

we also see ghilannain stabbed with the ritual dagger in the release date trailer, and similar waves of magic/energy roll out of her as they do varric as they both lay on the ground, lyrium dagger in their chest.

he must have needed varrics blood in that dagger for some reason. no clue why, maybe to save Varric, maybe to save himself, let’s not even think about how the idol that bore that dagger is the same thing that cost Varric his brother! but anyway. something is going on with that ill bet money on it
