yesterday i acquired a roughly 200 year old (?) coin from the qing dynasty which entered japan via travelling merchants. pretty epic

the old man running the stall at the fair explained the coin to me and i did some research to figure out where it was minted based on the manchu characters on the back—mine is probably from yunnan province!!

the characters on the first picture say 乾隆通寶(qianlong tongbao) in chinese, for the qianlong emperor under whose reign (1735-96) these were minted. the characters on the back are apparently manchu characters, the left one (boo) means currency (?) and the right one designates the issuing mint. according to wikipedia mine could be from multiple mints in yunnan province, which is apparently also where the copper used in the coins mainly came from!! super cool find, i was not expecting to learn about manchu coinage on my trip to tokyo this year but i’m glad i did—i love didactic old japanese men who collect antiques and are willing to share about them; really made my day :’]]
