Hey, if you're still willing to make it, I'd be interested in the RPGmaker MV tutorial (please)! (Always been curious to use it, but I know absolutely nothing about game dev...)
OK OK OK SO.
This tutorial technically applies to all RPGmaker versions, but Iā€™m using MV so maybe it doesnt apply 1 to 1. I have MV because I got it when it was on sale, but as a rule I think you should get the newest one (right now itā€™s MZ)!
RPGmaker actually has a tutorial thatā€™s inside the software itself! I highly recommend going through it and making a test project to remember the different things... But mostly imo as long as you understand switches and variables youā€™re all good. This tutorial will probably make WAY more sense if you went thru the tutorial already.
(also this is... less a tutorial and more ā€œthings i wish someone wouldve written down in an easier spot to findā€ lol)
P L U G I N S. USE THEM. THEY WILL SAVE YOU SO MUCH TIME.
Plugins are pretty much little bits of programming that you can add to your project to change your game. Itā€™s pretty useful if you know how to program, but if youā€™re like me, it is REALLY USEFUL because thereā€™s a lot of really talented people doing some great plugins out there. (iirc rpgmaker ace uses ā€œscriptsā€ instead of plugins.) Plugins in MV are .js files! To add them to your game, drop the js file into your projectā€™s folder>js, and then in rpgmaker go to tools>plugin manager, and select the file through here. I am writing this down because it took me a good long while to find out.
As for great plugins, i CANNOT recommend yanflyā€™s enough. They have a bundle of their whole library for 30$ and imo it is a MUST BUY. Other notable plugin makers are GALV, Himeworks and moghunter. Also if you got rpgmakerā€™s dlc thereā€™s plugins in your rpgmaker local folder. Took me months to even realize.
A few more things about plugins:
-if you use a plugin, CREDIT THE MAKER!!! I recommend making a list of the plugins youre using along with the creatorā€™s terms of use-- some might be fine with just being credited, but some might ask for you to contact them first. Some of those plugins might be a few years old and you might not be able to contact the creator-- on my end I tried to leave a comment somewhere on their website at least.
-some dont play nice with one another and might create bugs! Sometimes itā€™s just a matter of reordering them in the plugin manager (higher plugins take priority or smg? usually plugins tell you where to place them, like ā€œput this one at the top so it doesnt break stuffā€).
-usually if i had like something i wanted to do in rpgmaker (like... having a visible hp bar for enemies) iā€™d just type ā€œhp bar enemies rpgmakerā€ on google and it usually did the trick. rpgmakercentral is a great ressource
-If you get a bug theres a 90% chance itā€™s because of your plugins. In that case the fastest way to find out which one is to turn off all your plugins and turn them on one by one until the bug happens. then you have found The Culprit and can act appropriately
MEMORY
Um when youre maybe 40% done you should play your game with the task manager open so you can see how much memory your game uses. As a reference I think mine runs around 300-500MB, which is fine and works on most computers. (i think omori is 600MB?) You should do this just in case because you might find out your game runs at upwards of, uh, 3 gigabites of memory or something. It is absolutely not something that happened to me. No siree. It definitely hasnt happened because I added a glitch animation effect to every single torch in the game and it caused the game to leak memory like crazy. anyway. check the memory at some point
PIXEL ART
pixel art and tilesets in rpgmaker is hell i have blocked it out. Look it up yourself and struggle along. Using the already existing tilesets as a base was very useful. Or just buy some tilesets online and save yourself time

CREDITING
Credit every ressource that isnā€™t yours. Can be from icons you found on itchio to plugins to sound effects you found on a website. The standard seems to be credits inside the game (whether as a choice in the menu or at the end), and a credits text file inside your game folder. I personally added each personā€™s website so if you need ressources just look there lol
EXPORTING THE GAME
dont fucking export as mac donā€™t do it itā€™s hell if you have a mac and its actuallyĀ  impossible to export to mac if you have a pc. I got lucky enough to have a friend who both possessed a mac AND rpgmaker MV. But it still has problems and even some industry ppl told me ā€œlmao you made a mac version I would NEVERā€ so just save yourself time and donā€™t export to mac. Exporting to PC is pretty self explanatory
A QUICK EXPLANATION ON SWITCHES AND VARIABLES
Those are very important to make a game and it took me a while to understand so heres a little section about it lol. maybe itā€™ll help
To take START AGAIN as an example, when you use a crest and the tears disappear, using the crest makes the ā€œTears1Goneā€ switch go from OFF to ON. The tears themselves have a second page where if Tears1Gone is ON, then the tears arenā€™t here anymore.

For variables, they can be anything but i only used them as numbers. So for the barrels, every loop the ā€œBarrelCheckā€ variable starts at 0, and every time you check a barrel the ā€œBarrelCheckā€ variable goes up by one. If you check barrels a lot thereā€™s different events, like siffrin thinking that the people of the house must rly like nuts, right? For that, I have a conditional branch that pretty much goes ā€œif BarrelCheck=5, then event is ā€œwow they rly like nutsā€ā€œ, ā€œif BarrelCheck=12 then another event happensā€, ā€œelse just the usual dialogue.ā€
Hereā€™s a tiny bit of how it looks like in practice! The tutorial might explain it better. It took me a little bit to understand how to even use it lol

as for event pages also: REMEMBER PAGE PRIORITY GOES FROM LEFT (least priority) TO RIGHT (the prioritest). So if an event youā€™ve added doesnā€™t start it may be because the page order you made is wrong.
THE CREATOR BRAIN ZONE
Making a game is hard. But it can also be extremely fun. But also itā€™s haaaaaard!!! How do I even make a gaaaaaame!!!
Play games that you love again. Take notes. Notice the very small parts about a game that make it incredibly easier to play. Add that to your game. As an example: i played the great ace attorney as I was making the prologue. AND. did you know the dialogue in ace attorney has a very slight pause at every comma or semi colon, and a longer pause after periods or exclamation points and stuff. Did you notice. Are you losing your goshdarn mind over it now. Well someone made a plugin to reproduce that so go say thanks
also you WILL hate your game at some point. and at that point you gotta push through it and tell yourself ā€œwell. if i hate it. maybe i should just. make it betterā€ and add like a cheesy scene about people eating snacks. works every time
anyway in general just analyze why you love/hate video games and add that to your game. just be extremely annoying about it. Like i just LOVE flavor text in games so I added it EVERYWHERE. Did i get worried it was gonna get annoying? Yes. Did a lot of people really like the flavor text anyway? Also yes. Make a game youā€™d love to play and it might click with people. Also what would be the point of making a game you donā€™t like to play??? NONE!!! SO BE AS SELF-INDULGENT AS POSSIBLE, GODDAMMIT!!!!!!!
also make a devlog post every two weeks with what you did in the last few days so you can see how far youā€™ve come later lol

Hello everyone! Welcome to this monthā€™s devlog!
If you just stumbled upon this, I am Adrienne, also known as insertdisc5! Iā€™m the developer, writer, artist, main programmer, etc of the game. The game being In Stars and Time, which is the next and final game in the START AGAIN series, following START AGAIN: a prologue (available here!).Ā  You can find out more about In Stars and Time here!!!Ā 
LETā€™S GET TO IT. This devlog is all about questions!!! So many questions!!! Iā€™m gonna answer them all!!!
Happy 2023, everyone! Itā€™s the year of In Stars and Time! In Stars and Time will release sometime this year on PC and Nintendo Switch! I hope youā€™re excited!!! In the meantimeā€¦
Nothing much to talk about this month! I am still fixing bugs, playtesters are still playing, etc. Soā€¦ hereā€™s another Q&A (Tumblr asks edition)! They're mostly characters/story based, because that's what Tumblr is all about. No spoilers though, I promise!!!

Siffrin likes to do wood carvings! Isabeau likes fashion, designing clothes, sewing them, that sort of thing. Bonnie likes to cook! Mirabelle and Odile both like to read- Mirabelle is a horror fan/YA type stuff, while Odile prefers non-fiction.
As for their fears, most of them are spoilery, but Odile is really afraid of heights.
Anonymous asks: I am DYING to know what that rope is on Mirabelle's outfit is, it's sometimes visible and sometimes not and I don't know what it's attached to?? I want to draw her but this rope!! Is getting me

Itā€™s a rope that works as a belt! It goes around her waist, not her hips. Itā€™s so her dress isnā€™t all flat and boring

Anonymous asks: What is each party member's favourite season? While we're at it, what's their favourite kind of weather?
Hmā€¦ I think Siffrin is split between winter and summer (they have a good cloak that works for all kinds of weather!). Mirabelleā€™s and Odileā€™s are fall. Bonnieā€™s is summer (coastal kid!). Isabeau hears everyone say every season except spring and picks spring.
They all prefer sunny weather for different reasons. Siffrin because itā€™s easier to travel when itā€™s nice outside. Bonnie because they like the sun. Mirabelle because she likes to read outside under a tree, same with Odile. Isabeau because ā€œbeing under the sun gives your skin a healthy glow!ā€
Anonymous asks: Questions! Do you have a rough estimate for how long the game will be? If this isnā€™t a spoiler, how did the gang all first meet? And if it is a spoiler thenā€¦ whatā€™s each of the gangā€™s favourite colour?Ā 
I don't want to give any numbers just because playtimes will vary drastically depending on the way you play, but I can confirm ISAT is SIGNIFICANTLY longer than START AGAIN: a prologue!!!
For the gang meeting, first Mirabelle went traveling to try to save Vaugarde, then she met Isabeau in Jouvente, then they met Odile while traveling, then they met Siffrin, and then they met Bonnie. The nitty-gritty details arenā€™t really that important so I havenā€™t thought about it much. Most of the details on how they met will be found early in the game, so you wonā€™t have to wait hours to know!
As for their favorite colors (Looks at the game. The game is in black and white) Think youā€™re funny, huh? HUH!?!???! NEXT QUESTION!!!!!

Siffrin was born with this cool hat. Popped right off with it on. And Siffrin is my favorite to draw, with Mirabelle a close second. Bonnie is my least favorite to draw within the gang but I still love them dearly. The King is my least favorite to draw period
inverts asks: why does siffrin wear gloves? what's loop's favourite food? what's the KING's favourite food? teehee
Bunch of reasons, but really the two main ones are 1. Looks cool and 2. Keeps them from biting their nails.
Thank you for the Loop question. No one asked about Loop!!! If Siffrin asked them their favorite food, Loop would say ā€œbananasā€. But is it true? Yes. But is it? Yes, for sure. But? Yes.
The Kingā€™s favorite food are uuuh (I go through my rolodex of foods) carambolas. Yeah
Anonymous asks: what are the gang's favorite hot cocoa toppings?
I donā€™t know enough about hot cocoa toppings to answer this, so have their favorite nonalcoholic drinks instead. Siffrin doesnā€™t think they have a favorite drink but really itā€™s sugarcane juice, Mirabelleā€™s is either tea or orange juice, Isabeauā€™s is probably milk or something, Odileā€™s is tea (but itā€™s gotta be expensive), Bonnieā€™s is pineapple juice.
Anonymous asks: whos the shortest (besides the kid) and tallest of them all?
Within the crew, Siffrin is the shortest (besides Bonnie), and Isabeau is the tallest! The real tallest is the King, of course.

Their sister taught them how to cook, so yes!

Have this map I drew early in development of the countries around Vaugarde. The story doesnā€™t really need me to know about The Whole Map so I didnā€™t think about it. I only figured out two neighboring countriesā€™ names too so I could say other countriesā€™ names for Worldbuilding Reasons (as in, to show Vaugarde is a country inside a world, and not just The Only Country In The World), but I do see Vaugarde as being surrounded with many other ones. Couldā€™ve figured out more country names, but two is a good number. Ka Bue is on the other side of the world- Odile has been traveling for A While. For country sizes here, think European countries!

Rpgmaker is my little cat that stays on my lap cutely and doesnā€™t even scratch me anymore. This is in big part thanks to my programmer who takes care of the really hard code for me teehee (THANK YOU ISABELLA!!!)

I genuinely donā€™t have a helpful answer for this, I donā€™t find it hard to stay motivated to finish things in generalā€¦ The few times I felt discouraged, I just either went ā€œok whatā€™s like A Small Thing I can finish today, so this day isnt a total washā€ even if itā€™s just doing one sprite, or ā€œwhatā€™s one thing that would make me really happy to addā€ like a small scene or something, or just making the chairsā€™ backs rounder for Lore Reasons, and then I do it, and I am happy, and I am motivated
Anonymous asks: what was it like converting the character designs to game sprites? did they transfer easily or was it difficult?
Pretty easy! Outside of Siffrin (who already has a very simple design), I knew I would have to convert them into sprites, so I knew I couldnā€™t go too detailed with them. Even with their first concept art, I made sure to doodle them as sprites as well so I could make sure they would look distinct from one another!

Honestly the main problem was with their heightā€¦ In the prologue, they all are very small, since I used a 48x48 size, and Siffrin has a MASSIVE hat that takes almost half his size, so all the other characters had to be drawn relative to Siffrinā€™s size, which meant I couldnā€™t add as many details as I wanted. Iā€™m glad that for In Stars and Time I found a way to make the sprites taller (theyā€™re 48x96 now, but Iā€™m not using the full height), so now they are all cute and not squished.

roebeanstalk asks: Have you run into any mechanics you've been excited about, but have decided it's better to save them for a future project to keep this one going? Kind of a "kill your darlings" but for game mechanics?
Iā€™m very happy to say that Iā€™ve managed to add all the things I wanted to add to the game! It helped that there werenā€™t that many mechanics I wanted to add in the first place lol. I even had time to add one I scrapped early in development because it wasnā€™t that important! But it made me happy to add it so itā€™s in now!!!!
galaksyz asks: how many siffrins must be stacked on top of each other until they overtake the eiffel tower in height (ok i just wanted to give you the mental image of the Siffrin Pillar)
actual question: once the game is released, what part of fan reactions & creations would you look forward to most/what would you hope for most?
i think it would be awesome to see fan comics or animations, or OST remixes, or YT playthroughs, analysis/essay videos, maybe AUs... if you had to pick just one of those sorts of things, what would it be that you'd like the most?

And I genuinely love every single fan reaction/creation I've seen so far!!!! I have many folders filled with everyone's reactions/creations that I love to look at when I feel down :')
Fan comics definitely have a special spot for me in my heart tho... Those were always my favorite kind of fanarts to make, as a fanartist myself. The comics Iā€™ve seen from the prologue already make me so so so happy!!!
And also, people just writing about the gameā€¦ Like, just about things they like, things theyā€™ve noticed, or theories they have, thereā€™s also been a few and they just make me so happy. My brain goes on a loop of ā€œyeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeahā€. This is why I love the theories channel on the discord so much hehe, I tried really hard to add little breadcrumbs so it makes me happy when people pick up on it!!! And someone made a post that was just a list of everything they liked about the prologue and it made me so happy it felt like I was floating for a week hehe
pixxyofice asks: I am always curious about gamedev struggles. So... how hard is it to fix bugs for this game in particular? With the time looping I bet it would be hard to figure out maybe.
Uhhh and also what are each member's favorite colors?
Not that hard! I havenā€™t done a lot of Big Weird Code inside of rpgmaker, so any bugs are usually because I messed up a switch or variable, so itā€™s just a matter of figuring out the problem and changing one (1) thing. As for finding out thereā€™s even a bug, thatā€™s what QA and playtesting are for!
Bugs related to the time loop mechanic have (FOR NOW?!?) all been taken care of, so the bugs now are mostly related to choices, since some choices appear/disappear depending on where you are in the story. So sometimes I get a playtester like ā€œhey Adrienne, i don't understand this choice i'm getting hereā€, and itā€™s because i messed up and it shouldn't be here yet. OOPS!
As for their favorite colors (I look again. The game is STILL in black and white. I try to run towards you but I'm held back) lemme at ā€˜em, LEMME AT ā€˜EMā€“ (a few minutes pass, I calm down) Ok. What's the last question?

Bird Tails
Previous post on feathers.
I see lots of art of winged people with no tails. Which I admit somewhat bothers me. I think it happens because people arent sure how to add a bird like tail to a person, or they dont think its necessary. But a birdā€™s tail is actually a super important part of flying. It helps create extra lift, itā€™s used for turning more precisely, slowing down to land, and birds that can hover in place use their tails to maintain their position.

The tail adding extra lift is especially useful for a winged humanoid, because even if you alter their anatomy even more to add the hollow bones and air sacs that birds have, humanoid legs can be kinda heavy. So having the extra lift near the legs would be pretty useful.
Just like wing shapes, different tail shapes also serve different purposes. Lots of bigger soaring birds have a fan shaped tail, and lots of very small birds that fly fast and turn fast have the split tail, which kind of resembles a fish tail.
The tail feathers also anchor on the bone and are very symmetrical, usually there are 6 or 7 feathers on each side of the tail, but it does vary between species.

- Mirabelle, The Chosen Heroine: Chosen by the Head Housemaiden, She first believes that the loops were the work of The Change God. A silly idea if you knew what she knew but a pleasant idea nonetheless! Besides, this way, she may be actually able to prove herself! This blessing would somehow give her the change she needed! At leastā€¦ Thatā€™s what she thoughtā€¦ So why are they still here? What more does she need to prove? Maybe, the Head Housemaiden would know what happened to the worldā€¦ Oh, if only there is a way to ask Siffrin what she said to him?
- Isabeau, The Beloved Warrior: You know itā€™s funny, he always thought that defeating the king would be more impactful. Like in those books you read as a kid! The hero goes on this incredible journey, growing stronger, falling in love, all that jazz! But boy, these Loops took the wind out of his sails! Like, he barely tryā€™s to confess to Sif anymore (not that he feels any less about them). However, now knowing that beating the king wouldnā€™t stop the loops, the next best thing is to try other ways! Now he doesnā€™t like to brag, but heā€™s a pretty smart guy. Siffrin has something to do with whatā€™s happening, as much as he doesnā€™t want to admit it. Maybe, there is a way to help them help the others! It just might work!
- Odlie, The Wary Scholar: Well, this turns out to be quite more than she signed up for. Not to say that she entirely regrets meeting any of them, they are quite the enjoyable lot to be aroundā€¦ However, it seems these Loops are taking a toll for the lot of them. Fortunately, she is ready to find out what exactly is going on. Luckily, she has taken the time of taking notes, oh she loves her notes! Although, there is a part of the puzzle that at every angle doesnā€™t quite fit. Siffrin. As much as she doesnā€™t want to admit it, they are in the middle of all of this Somehowā€¦ The fact that they donā€™t remember the loops, the way the king talks to them, even when he talks to the Housemaiden. The otherā€™s try tell Odlie that itā€™s probably nothing, that Siffrin is in just as lost as the rest of them. But she just canā€™t let this go. She will find out why this is happening to her family, whether Siffrin is guilty or notā€¦
- Bonnie, The Pure Hearted: Now, they may not understand what is happening and why all the adults are scared. But that is okay! The party snack leader is here to keep everyone safe, especially Frin. Frin canā€™t remember like the rest of them, so Bonnie has to make extra sure that heā€™s okay. Making sure he avoids all the tears, not to hit their hip against that counter, not to eat the pineapple and all that stuff! After all, itā€™s the least they can do. After what they did toā€¦ Anyway, they already somehow got Frin to let them hug him and sometimes he even call them ā€œBon Bonā€! So, the otherā€™s say that Firn and the king might be from that country that everyone forgot or something. Maybe, if you can get the King and Frin to talkā€¦ Maybe the King will help them! Like, Whatā€™s the worst that can happen! :)
- Loop, The Starstuck Guide: Itā€™s Loop! The incredibly helpful and informative guide to this party! The only one that seems to know all about the loops. The party is unsure about what Loops wants out of this, and all the advice they give is weird/confusing! Also, they are kind of mean? Like, they try to comfort the party the best they can. However, when it comes to Siffrinā€¦ They donā€™t say anything out front about Sif but they do say things about him. Like pointing out all of his deaths or mistakes, lightly insulting him and making fun about how forgetful he is. Itā€™s not great! Like who do they think they are. They just donā€™t know Siffrin like the rest of the party doā€¦ However, there is something familiar about this stranger.
- Siffrin, The DAMNED Traveler: ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦.. Itā€™s all their faultā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ just you waitā€¦ā€¦

ALRIGHT, I ASKED FOREVER AGO, BUT WHO WANTS TO HEAR ABOUT MY ISA LOOPS AU??
Heads up this contains a lot, and I mean A LOT of spoilers for In Stars And Time. Including: = Act 6 spoilers, including main mystery and secret encounter = Minimal Act 5 stuff = And a bunch of extra stuff that happens through Act 3 and 4. SO BASICALLY ALMOST EVERYTHING, FINISH THIS GAME COMPLETELY BEFORE READING (ESPECIALLY THAT ACT 6 ENCOUNTER, IT WILL LITERALLY BE THE FIRST THING I MENTION UNDER THE CUT)

Initial Concepts:

I feel it's important to show these sketches because they were the first ideas I ever had. I wasn't even entirely sure I wanted to make an AU at this point, I didn't even know how I'd approach it. But I started sketching and it's been on my mind since- SO! Isa is stuck in the timeloop. I know what his wish is and he DOES have a Loop equivalent! The grumpy dandelion guy is Roboro (it/they/he). Their name is a very small play on Ouroboros and they call Isa "Seedling". However, this post is not about them, as I'm gonna talk about it and Isa's dynamic in a separate post. In short, Isa is his normal loud self up until Act 3, right? They beat the King, they reach the end, and whoops, the loop isn't broken. So now, what happens is that Isa starts getting his brains out. He starts thinking more analytically and tries to problem solve.
The more stuck he gets in his head, the less he's able to perceive his friends as real people, and more like them holding him back. Because even if Isa explains that he's smart, that they shouldn't be surprised if he says something, shock of all shocks, reasonable- They'll forget it the next loop.
So Isa is stuck with trying to portray his confident, loud, supportive facade- Which is fine! It wouldn't be the first time! But it progressively gets more and more frustrating, as he tries to find answers and simply looses the energy to pretend to be stupid.
TL;DR: Isa in the timeloop, unlike Siffrin, becomes more distant and cold rather then something more akin to Sif's mania.

I imagine Isa didn't have this encounter the same way that Sif did. Yeah, frankly, Isa is pissed with the sadness- But that's not why he goes through with this.
In this moment, Isa is trying to kill two birds with one stone. He's trying to get through this quickly, as well as reassure Mira that they can do this! If he shows how strong he is, then she'll feel safe right???
Poor Isabeau forgot that whenever he shows that he thinks ahead, he scares people. How could he forget that? How could he forget that he's inherently---
Family Quest:

I still think Odile is the one to call out to him (same with sus quest).
The hangouts I'm still figuring out, cause I don't think they'd too similar to base game- But, fun fact, at the end of this run, everyone agrees to keep travel together!
Isabeau brings it up, can't hurt if you can fix your mistakes right? And everyone agrees. The relief on Siffrin is the most palpable thing Isabeau has ever seen.

Thanks to @the-bitter-ocean for prescribing tarot cards to Isa (THEY ALL FUCK SO HARD) and for the RAW ASS LINE
If interacted with in act 5, predictably, Isa tears it apart. He doesn't need the divine judgement upon him, he's faced everyone's perception his entire life.
However, he tears it methodically. Tears it once in even pieces, twice, three times, and one of the pieces once more. In a way he isn't even getting his emotions out, it's like he's actively trying to tear it apart so it stops nagging him, like he wants to shut it up. Though, the Judgement card symbolizes rebirth, absolution and inner calling. In Act 6 he'd be able to look at it and find comfort and confidence in the card.

And lastly, I have the Act 5 mirror picture. I haven't quite figured out how to make the normal ones work yet, however, I couldn't let go of the idea that Isa would not want to be in the picture.
The idea of seeing himself at all makes his head hurt and his stomach squeeze. The memory haunts him as he stands to the side and says the word. He didn't think the mirror would catch him.
AAAAND THAT'S ALL THE ART STUFF FOR NOW!!
I still have quite a bit of it to post, especially about Roboro, but I'm gonna leave it here for now.
I still gotta figure out the hangouts and potentially the dagger equivalent- but I have ideas for Bad Touch, the glass equivalent, and some extra little things that didn't happen in Siffrin's loops.
I needed to yap about this, because I've been slowly stacking up ideas and writing and I needed to share it at some point- If anyone read all this and has questions and stuff I fully welcome 'em!!
