fuck exercise for being legitimately good for helping depression like yeah I know you're providing me with the endorphins I'm desperately lacking but do you have to be so unbearably smug about it

Just going to throw out -JKR was objectively not an especially good writer. My thesis in 2007 was on that so that isn't new. Grabbing a zeitgeist isn't the same as being talented. Absolutely not defending either writer in any case but just noting, JKR being catchy and tropey doesn't mean she's a good wordsmith, because she isn't.
i think this is interesting because it raises the question of what a good writer is, which in my opinion is not solely to do whether or not someone is a wordsmith (although that can be a large part of it & is used in a lot of 'objective' models of good writing). i also think its different from a kids perspective vs from an adult perspective. I remember reading the chamber of secrets as a kid and being genuinely hooked by the mystery. is it the kind of thing i'd pick up now? no, but i don't think an adult audience was ever really intended and i would say her writing is about on par with other middle grade fiction. i've only read one book from gaiman and it was neverafter which wasn't middle grade but seemed YA adjacent and didn't think he was necessarily a great wordsmith either. anyways tl;dr everyone has their own opinion on what is good writing i was more just commenting on reaction of people within fandom spaces (i'm also totally willing to acknowledge that there have been people who have thought rowling was bad for years! i just don't think it was as much in the cultural forefront until everything went down.)
#also people in the last post made a valid point that the reaction against rowling's writing developed over time#and that it's been less time sense the stuff about gaiman came out#but i still feel like there was a bit of that kind of reaction very soon after the rowling shit#anyways reiterating i don't support either!#i will always support trans ppl & stand w victims#just thought it was interesting#sorry for getting into tumblr-pilled discourse i can't help myself#neil gaiman#jk rowling

it is honestly kinda wild seeing the reaction to two different cancelled and wildly popular authors (J.K Rowling & Neil Gaiman). I don't support either of them but it's a bit weird how people were so quick to discredit all of Rowling's work but still uphold Gaiman's genius.
#@ that one twitter post where they called Gaiman's writing objectively good....#and everyone was saying how Rowling's writing was never good#i just have to beg to differ#i want to make it clear i don't support either of them#neil gaiman#jk rowling#discourse#sorry for contributing to useless discourse it just kinda bugs me

Say it with me boys: it's "separate art from the artist" as long as they don't profit from it - so go ahead read Lovecrafts books but FUCK Neil Gaiman.
#exactly!#he is still alive & can still profit from people's support#so it's a different situation & needs to be treated as thus

i hate how "being a girl's girl" has replaced feminism. I hate that enforced conformity has replaced genuine compassion for and solidarity with other women. I hate how women call each other "pick me's" for not conforming to femininity or for daring to critique something other women like. I hate how we just keep finding new socially acceptable ways to bully other women for being unattractive or outspoken or difficult or complicated or weird or ambitious or for not performing femininity. I hate those front facing camera "comedians" whose whole thing is making up a straw-woman to make fun of. I hate the obsession with "girlhood" and clinging to being a girl instead of a woman. i hate "the girl version of the roman empire" and "girlhood" and it's just consumerism and I hate the characterised of girlhood as passivity, niceness, sweetness, helplessness and frivolity and I hate the revival of gender essentialism even as a joke!!!
