Please-Clarify
Three years ago the base of the volcano Teide left an everlasting impression on me, and that is precisely where these series have been born. To tell the truth, the idea to remain minimalistic and to stick to creating only a few gorgeous landscapes was ever tempting, but, being a photographer, I dismissed it as being petty. Dadaist and surrealist art practices have always appealed to me, and, ultimately, they became the key idea to this project. Man Ray uses various techniques in photography to create bizarre, absurd and abstract images. Technological progress supplies artists with more and more extraordinary tools for materialization of their fantasies. So when I was taking my first pictures for this project, I could already envision viewer's reaction and had a general idea about the kinds of (possible) questions I might be facing:
– Such a lovely landscapes! Where was it taken?
Which is why I tried to influence and change viewer's behavior: "Please Clarify" – is an experiment with a synthesis of analog and digital photography as a real, actual reflection of existence as well as artificially created reality.
The important part is that the virtual segment of scenes is created based on the actual physical and environmental parameters.
Furthermore, the purpose of the project and, in particular, of each image is to change the context and viewer's perception of what is happening, provoking and encouraging different reaction, raising different questions:
- Why? - What's going on and what kind of manipulation is it?
The scenes, filled with objects of inappropriate content and application are meant to create confusion and cause genuine, piercing sensation, usually experienced by a person after an illusionist's trick. To cite Comte de Lautréamont: “As beautiful as the chance encounter of a sewing machine and an umbrella on an operating table.”
