@blacklistcr // found Mr. Sol.
Tumblr media
“You have a most intriguing reputation.”
Solnaer was seated in his leather chair, one leg settled across the other as he leaned back into the cushion. His dark gaze didn’t rise from the phone settled in one hand. The other draped along the edge of the armrest. He had all the calm of a lion. Waiting, calculating, curious. Few humans had come so far into his criminal network to meet him. Most had found their deaths a long time ago, but this one-- this one was interesting.
He’d made it far enough into the circle that Solnaer was intrigued. Whether that boded well for the human or not was still to be seen.
“You must be so curious... Another underground organization, one you’ve never heard of, suddenly reaching its claws into...well, everything.” Solnaer finally looked up, his eyes flashing red like a trick of the light. “What is it you think you’re going to do about that?”

“Litarai, Solnaer. Dathei edeina ii melaicha roto.” Sorry, Solnaer. That I ask you to destroy and do these terrible things
“Ena. Nin kisihnathei. Nin yaidu vo chiada.” Don’t be. They pray for me. They understand why.
Even though the Vadya have their own language that they speak in with one another, Solnaer always feels most comfortable talking in Alsalian as that was the language that was beginning to come together when he was in his tribe. It would have been different at the time, but they’ve long since moved on to what would be modern Alsalian. Valden knows he prefers it, so he often speaks to him in it when he feels what he has to say is important.

                           BOOK STARTERS VOL.32     ( WICKED )    ( GREGORY MAGUIRE )
❛ Nothing is written in the stars. Not these stars, nor any others. No one controls your destiny. ❜
❛ People who claim that they’re evil are usually no worse than the rest of us. ❜
❛ Happy endings are still endings. ❜
❛ We believe in all sorts of things that aren’t true; – we call it history. ❜
❛ Does the devil ever struggle to be good again, or if so is he not a devil? ❜
❛ In the lives of children, pumpkins turn into coaches, mice and rats turn into men. When we grow up, we realise it is far more common for men to turn into rats. ❜
❛ Girls need cold anger. They need the cold simmer, the ceaseless grudge, the talent to avoid forgiveness, the side stepping of compromise.  ❜
❛ Love makes hunters of us all. ❜
❛ There is much to hate in this world and way too much to love. ❜
❛ You confuse not speaking with not listening. ❜
❛ As long as people are going to call you a lunatic anyway, why not get the benefit of it? It liberates you from convention. ❜
❛ The eye is always caught by light, but shadows have more to say. ❜
❛ Not everyone is born a witch or a saint. Not everyone is born talented, or crooked, or blessed; some are born definite in no particular at all. ❜
❛ We are a fountain of shimmering contradictions, most of us. ❜
❛ The wickedness of men is that their power breeds stupidity and blindness. ❜
❛ I know you don’t want to hear this but someone has to say it! You are out of control! ❜
❛ Even at the very worst - there is always choice. ❜
❛ Maybe the definition of home is the place where you are never forgiven. So you may always belong there, bound by guilt. And maybe the cost of belonging is worth it. ❜
❛ Cross a man and you struggle, one of you wins, you adjust and go on – or you lie there dead. Cross a woman and the entire universe is changed. ❜
❛ That was such a wonderful time, even in its strangeness and sadness. Life isn’t the same now. It’s wonderful, but it isn’t the same. ❜
❛ I don’t care for approval, and I don’t mind doing without. ❜
❛ It’s where I live. A permanent state of bereavement. This is nothing new. ❜
❛ Always the bridesmaid, never the bride. Always the godfather, never the god. ❜
❛ The world unwraps itself to you, again and again as soon as you are ready to see it anew. ❜
❛ Evil is an act, not an appetite. Everyone has the appetite. If you give in to it, that act is evil. The appetite is normal. ❜
❛ How many haven’t wanted to slash the throat of some boor across the dining room table?  ❜
❛ Even God used silence as a strategy. ❜
❛ I learned failure early and mastered it. ❜
❛ It isn’t whether you do it well or ill, it’s that you do it all. ❜
❛ This is why you shouldn’t fall in love, it blinds you. Love is a very wicked distraction. ❜
❛ Wisdom is not the understanding of mystery. Wisdom is accepting that mystery is beyond understanding. That’s what makes it mystery. ❜
❛ Wrong takes an awful long time to be proven, in my experience. ❜
❛ Such brightness, as you know, decays brilliantly. ❜
❛ I take responsibility only for the future, not the past. The past can’t hurt you the way the future can. ❜
❛ Tell me to mind my own business, tell me to go fuck myself, to piss off, go on, say it, but don’t tell me nothing’s wrong. ❜
❛ The truth isn’t a thing of fact or reason. It is simply what everyone agrees on. ❜
❛ One can’t make peace with another by force. ❜
❛ I am a forgettable leaf on a tree. ❜
❛ That’s all I want; — to do no harm. ❜
❛ I only believe in the opposite of luck, whatever that is. ❜

“What is that draws you to me, Valden?”
Solnaer peered down at the other Vadya, his hands lingering just around Valden’s throat. His red eyes bore into Valden’s gold ones, pinning him where he had fallen in their spar. As always, Solnaer put him on his back. And just as always, he was teasing him. Teasing him in the way only the two of them could; with the hint of violence. Their breaths echoed in the upper levels of the dome. The two suns shown brightly through the clear window and beyond their home, a field of magnificent purple flowers. Serenity despite their existence.
Valden the Judgment and his Iron Fist of Destruction.
“Maybe you ought to ask yourself the same, Sol.”
He didn’t move. Valden remained splayed out beneath the victor. Both of them knew, Valden could remove himself if he wanted. Solnaer leaned his weight forward, kneeling almost onto the other’s chest. The strands of his obsidian hair ticked Valden’s jaw. Solnaer studied him, wanting to squeeze on that throat and maybe... maybe...
Killing him would release him from the chains that bound him to their infernal duty. Even as he wanted to agree with it, Solnaer felt every step forward was three, four, five steps back. A losing battle. But it wasn’t Valden’s fault. No, he did his duty as Solnaer did his own. He eased back, saw Valden’s intake of breath, knew he had been thinking it too.
Did he want it? Did he want it also to end?
“I know why. I don’t think you do.” Solnaer hummed, dragging his thumb along the jugular vein. “You pass judgment. I am your consequence. But who punishes you for your actions? Who is judgment?”
He felt Valden swallow. Felt the tension beneath him. Those gold eyes slipped away. It wasn’t so much teasing now, was it? Solnaer drew his hands away from Valden’s throat. He swiped a lock of hair from Valden’s brow and smirked. He got to his feet and held his hand out.
“It’s okay. It’ll be our secret. I won’t even tell Eleste.” The smirk lingered
Valden took his hand and rose with a grunt. He dusted off his dark blue sparring robes. A faint scoff.
“Sol, why would you be fit to judge me? Only the Spirits can judge our actions.” Valden stepped away now, putting distance between them. Feeling self conscious, perhaps. Solnaer let him put that distance. He stared out at the flowers.
“Don’t be foolish, Valden. I am the only one fit to judge you.”

“There is purification in destruction,” Solnaer says one night while they sit on the ledge around the extrados. For miles there is nothing but forest. They have just laid waste to an entire country for the first time. Solnaer is calm. Valden trembles.
“You think death is purification?” Valden’s head is bowed, his words tremulous. “Who are we to say whether they live or die?”
“We were chosen for that purpose. That is our only purpose. If you cannot make a decision, then who is supposed to? The Spirits? They believe it is us who must make those rules. You.”
“And we purge to purify?”

Eleste was often one of his most vicious opponents in spars, despite her dislike of them. It’s one of the reasons why he was half in love with her, even though they never did have any kind of relationship.
With Valden it was easy to fall into that passionate, short-and-quick romance. Solnaer didn’t expect anything to come of it and had no real feelings for him aside from amusement. He was certain Valden felt... a little more than that, but he ignored it, preferring to pretend they both felt the same way. That it was just for fun. Valden eventually would go on to commit to a relationship with Eleste.
At one point or another the Vadya all had some kind of intimacy with one another--it was to be expected when there were no others who could understand their particular roles in the world. Solnaer was one of the few who took a liking to any of their followers. The Vadya were set upon a pedestal, made to be ones who ruled without really being rulers in the strict sense. They were gods--they tried to nudge the people in the right direction, passed judgment, had to be higher than them. It wouldn’t be right to mingle with them as if they were all the same. Or at least, not so intimately.
Nothing good could come of it.

Solnaer liked Valden because he was the only one who would fight him in a spar. They did so pretty often. He fought with Eleste a few times, but she never really enjoyed it.
Valden on the other hand as the Vadya of justice--he could appreciate a good spar. A good fight. Valden, the person he wielded the hammer and Solnaer the hammer himself.

So Solnaer is very old and was around on Praxon before Praxon had definable 'countries' and were just a bunch of nomadic tribes whose territory fluctuated depending on how they felt with another tribe.
So two tribes could be chill and they would just be like yeah cool you can come do your shit in our territory too, all good. Which likely resulted in mixing of blood lines and traits which was why some Veruna have more Ildrat traits and some Ildrat have less magic than others.
Solnaer's tribe was always at odds with someone. His father was the tribe head and he was head of the small hunting group that also amounted to their security should they get attacked.
Solnaer's twin brother Jastfaer was less keen on being in battle but he followed Solnaer around like a puppy and Solnaer loved him.
Anyway, Solnaer's father was really combative and despite being told they should make friends with the others due to their territory having been hit hard by storms and so animals and plant yields were shit he was like nah I'm not into that.
Which pissed Solnaer off. His mother, the previous head of the hunt, said their father would kill them all soon enough.
And he did. Another tribe sent the wolf-like creatures, the Thrites to kill the tribe. Solnaer and Jastfaer were the only survivors. Filled with such hate in his heart, Solnaer decided he would kill them all or die trying. Jastfaer followed despite his disagreement.
The two of them did, indeed, kill that tribe and almost died there but the Eternity Spirits had been watching. They chose the two of them, and Solnaer became the... failsafe if all went bad despite the Spirit's best efforts.

Solnaer is the type to let you do whatever you want so long as he can do whatever he wants. Outside of cheating in a relationship. In a regular setting where hes not trying to consume the entire universe, that's probably pretty okay. But you know if you're a-ok with him dissolving the universe you would still have to hold his interest long enough.

Things Solnaer actually really hates in no particular order:
Stupidity
Repeating himself
Unnecessary violence - haha more on that at some other point
Murder of children
War
Deceit / Deception
People who talk in circles
People who don’t say what they mean
Uniforms
Wolf-type animals including dogs
80% of people in general but especially the type who are stupid
