We are now living in a world where being stressed is just a normal thing and being depressed is sometimes being a topic in a funny conversation. If you say that you are experiencing depression, you will be mocked like you are just asking for attention. Some will be irritated by the words that you use to express your feelings. But how come that this serious matter doesn't receive a serious attention? This is the reason why most of those people who thinks that they are experiencing depression is afraid to tell that they need help.
A judgemental society can make those people to suffer more because instead of thinking how they may seek for help, they will have another problem because they will be thinking what other people will say about them. The next topic that I will discuss are the reasons why most of us are experiencing too much stress or DEPRESSION. One of the main reason is the PRESSURE that we are feeling if we don’t succeed to reach whatever we want to achieve. Thinking that those people who believe in you will be disappointed because of the things that you've done or the things that you failed to do will definitely create a sadness inside your head. And this sadness may force you to stop being productive because you are losing interest to whatever you want to achieve.
The next one is BULLYING. This is the most unacceptable reason why people are experiencing depression. Those people who are trying to feel strong are making someone feel that they are weak or even worthless. Bullying can cause intimidation and intimidation can make someone to be afraid to face other people. It’s just a simple cycle, a cycle which can cause someone to destroy their lives or even end it. Nobody has the right to make someone feel bad and you will never have that right until your very last breath.
If someone close to you shows the sign of depression which can include changing of the way they talk or the way they act. Try to talk to them. This may looks like a simple thing to do, but believe me! This means a lot to them. Making them feel important and that they have someone like you who is willing to help them will definitely give them the will to live and their life a life that is worth living. A simple act of kindness can help them to escape darkness. Darkness that can give them thoughts that will destroy their lives.
Help each other. Make them feel that it is true that no man is an island. Nobody in this world is living without anyone by their side. If you are one of those people who feels like they are worthless, just always remember that we are created by a worthy individual. God never made a useless thing in this world. You have a role in this world and a simple problem shall never be able to get that role away from you. Live your life to the fullest, because the second chances that you can have is countless and the good things that you can do in this world is endless.

In our society today, mental illness is prevalent among young adults, like you, like us. According to mayoclinic.org, mental illness refers to a wide range of mental health conditions like disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behavior. Examples of mental illness is depression and anxiety.
It is rarely talk about it because we are not comfortable to speak about our problems or we are afraid to speak about it. Also, we might judge us as weak person, treat it like a joke or too negative about it. Even if it is our family or our close friends, we don’t want to share about the problems that we are facing today whether it is internal or external. Some people tend to ostracize themselves to the society because they can’t handle the pressure bearing inside them whether it is physical, psychological or physiological. It is a serious condition that we need to spread awareness about mental illness and discuss on how we handle carefully to our daily life. Mental illness can vary to person to person, depending on the situation whether in school, family and many more. It is not a one-time event that causes mental illness but a series of events accumulating over the years of self-suffering or self-blame. There many symptoms of mental illness like changing moods quickly, he/she rarely talks, sudden outburst of anger and many more. The symptoms of young adults include sadness, irritability, feeling negative and worthless, anger, poor performance or poor attendance at school, feeling misunderstood and extremely sensitive, using recreational drugs or alcohol, eating or sleeping too much, self-harm, loss of interest in normal activities, and avoidance of social interaction. These symptoms can also lead of suicidal thoughts because of overthinking, pressuring themselves and thinking there are useless.
There a lot of varieties what causes teens to be depress like social media is a primary source of anxiety and pressure for adolescents. Teens become depressed when they compare their lives unfavorably to the people they follow on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Moreover, scientists have found correlations between teen smartphone use and depression. Excessive use of technology damages relationships, education, and extracurricular activities. Life events, these include bereavement, divorce, work issues, relationships with friends and family, financial problems, medical concerns, or acute stress. Personality, those with less successful coping strategies, or previous life trauma are more susceptible. Genetic factors, having a first-degree relative with depression increases the risk. Childhood trauma. Some prescription drugs, these include corticosteroids, some beta-blockers, interferon, and other prescription drugs. Abuse of recreational drugs, abuse of alcohol, amphetamines, and other drugs are strongly linked to depression. A past head injury. Having had one episode of major depression, this increases the risk of a subsequent one. Chronic pain syndromes, these and other chronic conditions, such as diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cardiovascular disease make depression more likely.
According to ABS-CBN depression is the most common mental health problem worldwide, and in the Philippines, figures reveal a surprisingly high number of cases among the youth. The investigative and research group there are 300 million people who are suffering depression, worldwide and it is the most common health problem that can lead to suicide. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15 to 29 years old around the world in 2015. There are 788000 suicide death globally in 2015. There are 10.7 per 100000 in global rate suicide. Among Filipinos, there are 3.3 million or 3.3% of total population suffers from depressive disorders. 3.1 million or 3.1% of total population suffers from anxiety disorders. According to the global school-based student health survey from January to march 2015 that among high school students, 17% of high school students 13-15 years old said they attempted suicide at least once. 12% said they seriously considered attempting suicide. 11% have made plans on how they would commit suicide. Social media envy is a moderate significant prediction of symptoms of depression among Filipino high school students. According to suicide.org, a teen takes his or her own life every 100 minutes. Suicide is the third-leading cause of death for young people ages 15 to 24. Approximately 20 percent of teens experience depression before they reach adulthood, and between 10 to 15 percent suffer from symptoms at any one time. Only 30 percent of depressed teens are being treated for it. We have to alert of the warning signs of suicide like talking or joking about committing suicide. Saying things like, “I’d be better off dead,” “I wish I could disappear forever,” or “There’s no way out.” Speaking positively about death or romanticizing dying (“If I died, people might love me more”). Writing stories and poems about death, dying, or suicide. Engaging in reckless behavior or having a lot of accidents resulting in injury. Giving away prized possessions. Saying goodbye to friends and family as if for the last time. Seeking out weapons, pills, or other ways to kill themselves.
Please, if you know someone have this kind of symptoms or disorder like depression especially it is a serious case. Just give them time and space to reflect. When talking to them we have to be careful in making remarks that might offend them and just listen to their stories. And especially, be there for your love ones. When if it is worse, send help or call a specialize doctor to handle the situation. As I said, we must spread awareness about mental disorder because there so many people killed themselves. As I said, mental illness is prevalent among young adults, like you, like us. We must be aware that mental illness is widespread and it’s increasing every year. We must be sensitive about mental illness and do not take this lightly because it is an issue that can become severe when we least expected. Don’t blindly tell them, that they can do it. We have to listen carefully and not lecture them.

What are Mental Health Issues?
Martin, Carl May 9, 2019
Have you ever thought of yourself having mental health issues? Some people think they do but most often than not it is self-diagnosed, there are also those who would use the terms like depressed, and anxiety in social media with little regard for what they mean and to those who suffer from said mental health issues. Here we are going to define what are mental health illness. disorders and breakdown common misconceptions about them.
First of all, Mental Health Illness and Mental Health Disorders are different although used interchangeably. Disorder is a disturbance that affect the normal function of the body or mind, most mental health illnesses end with disorder, like bipolar disorder, depressive disorder or anxiety disorder, however “illness” is a disease or a period of sickness that affect the body or mind, therefore if a disorder cause considerable damage to a body overtime it will be diagnosed as an illness. Do note that not all disorders are diseases but are still categorized as an illness. According to the fact sheet of the World Health Organization, Mental Health Disorders include the following: Depression, Bipolar Affective Disorder, Schizophrenia and other psychoses, Dementia, Intellectual Disabilities and Developmental Disabilities including autism. The said disorders are among the few common ones but currently There are nearly 300 mental disorders listed in the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). This is a handbook used by health professionals to help identify and diagnose mental illness. According to Mayoclinic, Symptoms of those who are diagnosed with a mental health illness can vary, depending on the disorder, circumstances and other factors. Mental illness symptoms can affect emotions, thoughts and behaviors. People suffering from illness may experience the following: sleep or appetite changes, mood changes, withdrawal, drop in functioning, problems with thinking, increased sensitivity, apathy, feeling of disconnection, illogical thinking, nervousness, unusual behavior, suicidal thoughts, and extreme mood swings. There are varieties of what causes mental health disorders, usually they can surface due to a combination of biological, psychological and environmental factors. Biological factors are linked with the abnormal function of the brain due to nerve damage or defects and may be cause by genetics, infections, injury, prenatal damage or injury during birth, substance abuse and poor nutrition. An example of a mental illness due to genetics is schizophrenia, those who are born into a family with a history of schizophrenia are prone to developing the disease by themselves. Psychological disorders may be due to childhood trauma like sexual or domestic abuse, loss of loved ones, neglection, and emotional abuse. Environmental factors are stress inducing situations that may trigger mental health disorders like lost of loved ones, divorce, social or cultural expectations, insecurities and moving places like switching schools or jobs.
There are lot of misuse of serious mental health issues, like people saying they are OCD or jokes that uses the word “autistic” as the punchline, this can be very upsetting to patients diagnosed with mental health illness and their families. It may be due to a lack of education around what it truly means to suffer from a mental illness, and why these words matter. Regardless, actions that discriminate people with mental health issues are highly stigmatized even if used as joke. There are also misconceptions about mental health that are often due to lack of information or honest mistakes and of them is that many people perceive those with a mental illness as individuals with a collection of negative traits. It is often difficult to recognize that behaviors associated with mental health conditions vary and are often not personality traits, but side effects of a mental health condition. Several other mistakes include: People with Mental Health Problems are weak and/or lazy, Mental Health Issues are uncommon, and Mental Health Issues cause a person to be violent.
As a conclusion, we must be aware that mental health issues are widespread and is common among other people, we must adapt sensitivity for those who suffer from such illness and accept them instead of fearing and isolating them. Furthermore, let us not take lightly of Mental Health Issues as some of them are really severe and may offend those who are diagnosed with it and at worse it may become a tipping point for them.
