Will Mary murder Mycroft?
(Before reading, I hope everyone’s taken the time to appreciate the alliteration in the title. #theclubcan'tevenhandlemerightnow 😎)
I was looking back at my tumblr notes and noticed rowanthestrange gave this theory in response to my meta Mary Poppins & the ‘wind changing’; Mycroft’s death & the ‘East Wind.’:
Mary is going to shoot Mycroft because, in HLV, she shoots the coin through the Queen’s head. And, as we all know, Mycroft was (jokingly) established as the ‘Queen’ in ASiB.
I think this theory is really plausible. I love symbolism like this, and it also reinforces the idea of Mary being a parallel of Irene. I talk about this aspect in ’Mary & what she didn’t need to say?’ but the parallels essentially boil down to:
Mary and Irene both work (ed?) for Moriarty.
They both conform to the ‘in love with the mark’/ hit(wo)man with a heart trope. They fall for their targets: Irene for Sherlock, and Mary for John. Love is/ will be their downfall.
Irene tries “to play the Holmes boys” and very nearly wins until Sherlock solves her passcode. I predict Mary will “play the Holmes boys” and win. It’ll look like Sherlock is a goner until Mycroft steps in, sacrificing himself in the process.
What if Sherlock’s shooting is actually foreshadowing Mycroft being shot? Sherlock says that Mary “failed to make a kill shot” but that’s not true. Sherlock does die but his fear for John’s safety saves him. Love literally restarts his heart. So, what if Mary once more 'makes a kill shot’ but, this time, the victim can’t be saved?
This will crush Sherlock, but it’s necessary for the story. The one thing we can 100% be certain of is that John Watson and Sherlock Holmes will not die. Sherlock is used to panicking about situations where John is in danger, but the day is always saved just in the nick of time.
This pattern cannot continue because Sherlock needs to successfully complete his heroic arc. Sherlock is partly the story of a great man becoming a good one. He is still growing as a character. And, things have to get worse before they get better.
This is a common pattern in fiction, so I’ll just cite an example I’m most confident with: Harry Potter. SPOILERS AHEAD. Undoubtedly, Harry is the hero, and he makes a massive mistake, unintentionally resulting in Sirius’s death. Harry needs to go through this loss so his character can grow and so he can defeat the villain, Voldemort.
Similarly Sherlock needs to make a massive mistake (like we haven’t got enough of those already 😉) that is well and truly irredeemable, and results in Mycroft’s death. He needs to undergo this loss, grow and learn from it before he can finally take down the villain, Moriarty.
Why must Mycroft die? I love him but there’s many reasons as to why it’s time for 'his last bow.’ For this meta, I’ll focus on this one: Mycroft is the biggest Deus ex Machina there is. It’s far too convenient for Sherlock’s big brother to be the British government. Need access into a top secret military base? No problem! In too deep in a Serbian prison trying to destroy a madman’s network? Don’t worry, I know just the guy who’ll bail you out!
In fact, I’d say Mycroft 'rescuing’ Sherlock in The Empty Hearse will foreshadow the circumstances of Mycroft’s death. Mycroft canonically dislikes 'legwork’ but, when Sherlock is captured and tortured, he pulls off the biggest legwork possible in order to ensure his brother’s (comparatively) safe arrival back in London. I think Sherlock will again be in danger, forcing Mycroft to do more 'legwork’, and it will sadly be the death of him.
I started this meta with some symbolism so I’ll end it with some. I think there’s more to the shot of Mycroft and Sherlock playing chess than just playing with the audience’s assumptions before revealing that they’re playing Operation.
I know next to nothing about chess, but I do know the Queen is the most powerful piece on the board. Now, doesn’t that scream Mycroft 'British government’ Holmes? So, if Mycroft is the Queen, to me it follows that Sherlock is the King. If the King is 'threatened with capture’ (death?), and that threat cannot be removed, the 'game’ is over: checkmate. This is something the Queen cannot afford.
Conclusion: Mycroft (the Queen) will sacrifice himself in order to protect Sherlock (the King).

to all the people saying that twelve loved clara more than river because he didn’t find a loophole to save her:
twelve didn’t find a loophole for his wife (whom he loves dearly) because clara taught him a lesson. he just about broke the universe to save that girl, and he knows that tearing apart time and space for those you love is not the answer. he has learned that a happily ever after does not mean forever.
so, please, stop pitting these two women that the doctor loves very much against each other.

Dear anybody who calls Caitlyn “Bruce”, because that was her birth name, Do you call Marilyn Monroe “Norma”? Do you call Rihanna “Robyn”? Do you call Tina Fey “Elizabeth”? Do you call Whoopi Goldberg “Caryn”? Do you call Audrey Hepburn “Edda”? and so many more celebrities by their birth name? Im going to guess you don’t since you respect their choices to be called by something other than their birth name because they don’t feel it fits them. Caitlyn is not a Bruce. Caitlyn is a Caitlyn. It doesn’t matter that she has been known as Bruce for the past 65 years. Now she wants to be called Caitlyn. Call her Caitlyn.
