hey everyone!! sorry abt my extended absence but college and work has been SUPER busy and i haven’t had time for zant lately! i’ll try to get to replies and other stuff i owe soon!

IN HIS SPARE TIME, zant entertains himself by making tea, reading twili poetry, and of course performing horrifying experiments on his shadow beasts to improve them in battle. the twilit assassins (the weird shield face things with the caduceus symbol on them in the cutscene where he attacks hyrule castle) are the results of these -- but more specifically, they are the former members of the royal family zant captured. in addition to being long-armed, much moreso than the normal shadow beasts, they have a stronger grip, sharper instincts, and a thicker hide than standard. zant keeps them as demented trophies of his conquest, deeply amused by the servile nature of his former employers.

BUUUUT in the post game he enjoys cross-stitching, reading hylian poetry, and practicing his ancestors’ magic.

INSOLENT QUEEN:

         ―  with every step he takes forward, she is forced one step back. the action turns her gut  ‒  she is not weak. not in the face of spineless traitors and not in the face of anyone. yet, she is completely on the defensive. every step she takes, the connection between her bare feet and the cold ground near silenced under the thunderous thrum of her blood, drives hot fury through her veins, twisting and twirling like an ugly ink.

            “  you desire nothing but power,  ”  she all but spits, voice cold and hard with anger. her voice echoes into the stormy clouds floating above them. the unfeeling gaze of that twisted mask is taunting.  “  how can you go on and on about salvation when our people don’t need saving  ?!  we are content in our ways  !  ”

            the wind howls. it nips at her feet and the hems of her robes and chills her skin. zant has always left something unset deep in her. now he has torn that thing completely away, leaving her feeling vulnerable and unstable. she knows what it is she feels when she looks up to where his face hides, but she dares not give it name, because fear is unbecoming of a queen. she can feel his newfound, horrible power rolling off him in waves. 

             “  i will be dead before i work with you  !  ”

        “ ON THE CONTRARY, MIDNA -- IT IS YOU WHO DESIRES POWER. ”

        His words are punctuated with the sharp click-clack of his polished gold shoes taking another series of steps towards her. Behind his mask, he looms over her, even if they are of the same height. The putrid helm is mere inches from her face, and Zant himself stands not much farther. As his proposal hits the air, viewing Midna’s face, hearing her defy him, and seeing her features contorting into disgust fills the usurper with nothing short of RAGE.

        ‘ WHY OH WHY MUST EVERYONE MAKE EVERYTHING SO DIFFICULT?! ’ he simmers in his thoughts. Zant shakes with barely restrained rage, hands clenching tightly into fists behind his long, bulky sleeves.

        “ Our people have been FORCED to grow content, thanks to you and the family! You will not allow them the chance to retake what is rightfully THEIRS. ” He says, one sleeve shooting up to point beyond them to the side, towards the stone outcropping on which, long ago, the gateway to the world of light would form. Long ago. Certainly never in Zant’s lifetime. But it will open again. He will make sure of that.

        “ They are not happy here, Midna, they’ve grown ACCUSTOMED TO MISERY! ” Zant hisses from behind his serpentine adornment. “ Have you grown so COMPLACENT in the royal family’s favor that you cannot see that simple fact? ”

zant is a solid 6′8 without his helmet on -- but by comparison for the twili ( men, that is ), he’s below average height. like everything else about himself, this makes him insecure, and as such, he prefers to wear his helmet to make himself look taller than he actually is

LORD GANONDORF:

oh, how majestic this castle was!

each and every detail of it was intricate beyond belief, the craftsmanship behind the long stone hallways, the drapery, every nook and cranny – the riches of the hylians was undeniable in their work. with resources plentiful, they had poured efforts into the luxurious living of their nobility, allowing them to sit and observe their kingdom like pampered housecats. the throne; oh, the throne, it was most exquisite of all.

HUGE, large enough to swallow hyrule’s monarch easily, with soft, red velvet cushioning and a polished gold frame.  when the residual effects of twilight melted from his body and he rejoined the realm of light, hyrule’s throne was the first thing he made for.

it had been designed for their rulers, but it fit him perfectly.

ego beyond bolstered, even zant’s insufferable pride was not enough to knock him down from the feeling of ecstasy of claiming what was rightfully his.

‘ surpassed? oh, yes, certainly. ‘ ganondorf reclined, finding a comfortable position upon hyrule’s throne, crossing a leg over his knee. a grin split his lips wide, teeth bared as he smiled at zant’s approach. his mood was willing in humoring zant, though, loose ends could not be left untied. ‘ have you been monitoring the whelp, to see where he may try to take the princess imp? ‘

        “ OF COURSE, MY MASTER. OF COURSE. I HAVE NEWS THAT WILL PLEASE YOU EVEN MORE. ”

        The Twilit Messengers depart from their master’s side, shuffling off to hide in some corner, away from the sight of Zant’s GOD. They do not deserve to be in his presence -- their lord has told them so. Zant walks forward, unabated and with arrogance swelling in his chest. PRIDE at being praised so highly puts a skip in his step as he moves.

        “ THIS, master, is the real good news. The boy will be of no concern. Not while he remains TRAPPED as a blue-eyed beast. A mere animal cannot oppose your might, my lord, ” Behind his mask, Zant’s lips curl into a smile. It is a knowing smirk, one that strains the corners of his face and makes him go rigid with tension. He is almost giddy about it.

        Every angle dealt with, every base covered, every threat eliminated. Zant was proud of himself; not like that was unusual. But today, today he’d done something GREATER than merely ‘well’.

        “ A curse, my lord. A curse that keeps him restrained to his lesser form, even within this harsh light. Using something of my own invention, of course. ” As always, he is unable to resist flaunting his own intelligence.

        “ Without Midna or Princess Zelda’s guidance, he will surely perish. I trust this pleases you, LORD Ganondorf? ”

        “ YOU MADE A WISE DECISION, EVEN IF YOU CANNOT SEE IT. ”

        The Twilit King looked out and over the Kingdom he now owned. Another province, fallen to his reign. Another swathe of light blotted out forever. Another collection of light dwellers, submitting to his rule. Meager spirits could not possibly HOPE to defeat him--and what could this princess do?

        She could not oppose him. She WOULD not.

        “ I ASSURE YOU, my dear Zelda. I am a man of my word. Your people will be unharmed--so long as you understand that I am the rightful ruler of Hyrule now. Unfortunately for you, the era of the light dwellers has come to an end. ”

        He turns on his heel, helmet looking over his shoulder at the pitiful sight. Despite its unsightly brightness, and its infestation of Hylians, Zant could not deny the beauty in this world. The beauty in Hyrule. The beauty that HIS people were denied. Forced to find beauty in the eternal darkling light that dusted the horizon.

        No longer. This world would be theirs. This world would be HIS. Now Zant understood--to rule only one throne would be to never truly rule at all.

        “ There is beauty in twilight, you know. A beauty I can’t expect a light dweller to be able to see. ”

        “ LISTEN TO ME, MIDNA; IT IS UNWISE TO DISREGARD ME SO QUICKLY. ”

        FORWARD he steps, helmet looming over his fellow Twili. His robe flutters in the wind of the Twilight Realm, a foul stench carried on the lingering breeze. There is no telling what dark thoughts dance behind the grotesque metal mask. Perhaps that is why he selected it to begin with--a way to hide his wicked, cruel thoughts.

        “ Do you not realize what we could accomplish together? Defying me is not in your best interests, my dear Midna. I desire only to save our race--I am far from the monster you believe me to be. ”

        Oh, how LONG he’s waited for this moment. How long he’s desired to say these words to her--to SHOW her how truly misguided she was. And, like he’d always expected, she was stubborn. She was resistant. Of course she was. Like the rest of the wretched, spineless royal family, Zant knew her. She clung to power like a life preserver, content to spin forever in darkness if it means order prevails.

        But not him. Never him. HE is so much different. Of course he is. Of course.

        “ ALL I do, I do in the name of our PEOPLE. You’d deny them salvation? Condemn them to this miserable existence?! Do you even HEAR yourself, Midna?! ”

        “ MASTER. ”

        Soft shoes against softer carpet sound throughout the expansive hallway of the THRONE ROOM, atop the highest tower in HYRULE CASTLE. At his side walk a pair of shadow beasts, the servile creatures marching in lock-step with their heads bowed. They do not dare to look the Demon King in his eyes, nor do they seek to earn the ire of their MASTER.

        “ I have done as you asked. Midna and the OTHER will trouble us no longer. ”

        Fondly he remembers casting Midna into the blinding power of the Light Spirit, and even fonder he remembers the Shadow Crystal he fashioned to force the hero into his bestial form. Permanently. After all, how could a mere beast of the earth hope to defeat the Twilit King and his GOD?

        “ There will be no one left to trouble us now. WE will be victorious. ” Zant had always been crass in proclaiming his victory, and why should now be any different? He PERSONALLY dealt with the thorns in his side, removed any threat to his god’s rise to power. He has won.

        “ I trust you will find I surpassed your expectations, my lord? ”
