When you are away from home for an extended period of time, you don't want your envelopes and packages piling up in your mailbox and exposed to potential thieves. You want the US postal hold mail request back your mail.

Postal Pointers: It is easy to ‘hold’ mail when vacationing
Going on vacation and need to put your mail on "hold"? This is a simple task by following one of these three processes:
- Present online at: www.usps.com (select Manage your mail in the blue bar above, then select Capture mail)

Mail Hold Request is not required for PO Box, as mail deposit will be allowed for up to 30 days.
Upon completing the request to hold mail online, a confirmation page will be displayed with a confirmation number to verify that your request has been accepted.
Be sure to print this page or copy your confirmation number for future reference.
Mail waiting requests sent before 2 a.m. Monday through Saturday can begin on the same postal business day.
Requests made in person or by calling 1-800 must be submitted one business day in advance. You can submit a mail hold request up to 30 days in advance. Only one hold is allowed at a time.
Mail hold requests must be made for a period of at least 3 days. The maximum duration is 30 days. All mail, regardless of name, will be held for the address entered.

Change of Address Checklist: Who to Notify When You Move
Ready to change direction? In addition to the obvious basics like purchasing boxes and packing supplies, renting trucks, or hiring professional drivers, you also need to make sure you notify the right people and places about your move. It's better to do this first than later so you don't have to deal with potential problems like missing bills or services. You're not sure where to start? Post Office

Telephone, cable and internet
