DIY 5 Minute Fixes

Some home repair projects are so quick and simple that, even if you don’t know your way around a toolbox, you won’t need to bother your father-in-law or your best friend or any other handyperson you know. And you don’t need to dedicate all your spare time to home repairs. These home repair projects are easy enough for anyone to do and take only about five minutes out of your day. You may even be able to get these repairs on a commercial break during Sunday afternoon football or between Netflix episodes of your favorite show.

 Stop a Running Toilet

 You don't need to call a costly handyman to fix a latrine that won't quit running. You can fix this irritating issue yourself in under five minutes. Toilets run continually because the chain becomes twisted and shortened, keeping the flapper from closing securely. To solve your toilet running issue, you need to prevent the toilet chain from becoming kinked. You can do this for next to nothing and about five minutes of your time.

 Simply lift the tank top. Disconnect the toilet chain from the arm and run the chain through a plastic drinking straw. Leave a little bit of the chain free of the straw so it can move freely and reattach to chain to the arm. The plastic straw will keep the chain away from getting snagged and twisted, so the flapper closes completely, and your toilet stops running.

 Clean Your Faucet's Aerator Screen

 If the water flow in your bathroom or kitchen faucet is spraying at weird angles, it may be that your aerator screen needs a decent cleaning. The screen’s function is to filter out time particles in the water, so it is normal that the screen may get clogged every once in a while. Luckily, cleaning the aerator screen is a simple and fast job.

 You should be able to twist the aerator off the finish of your fixture by hand, but if it gives you any trouble, you can use a pair of pliers to remove the aerator. To avoid scratching the finish on the faucet, you should wrap a rag around the fixture first. Another bit of advice, before you start, lay a towel in the sink or put the plug in. If you accidentally drop the screen, it won’t be lost down the drain.

 When you get the aerator screen is off, simply clean the particles from the screen by rinsing it with water or using a brush. Remove as much dirt and grim as you can so that the water can flow through it unrestricted. To put the aerator screen back in place, just screw onto the faucet and tighten it securely. The water should be flowing freely again.

 Keeping Cabinet Doors Closed

 It is frustrating when cupboard door won’t stay shut. You can repair a cabinet door in just a few minutes by installing a magnetic cabinet catch. It is a quick and easy job … and an inexpensive one, as well. You can find magnetic cabinet catches at the hardware store for less than three dollars.

 To install the magnetic cabinet catch, just screw the magnetic base to the cabinet. Then line up the metal strike plate in the right position and screw it to the cabinet door. It takes roughly five minutes, but your cabinet door will stay shut.

 Sticky Vinyl Window

 Vinyl windows are meant to easily slide open and shut. From time to time, however, you may struggle to open your window. That is because dirt and gunk can collect in the track of the window, causing it to stick. Clearing out the dirt might work, but many times, you need another trick. A simple fix is to use dry PTFE lubricant spray on the sticking points. Then wipe it off with a dry cloth. There will be enough lubricant left on the vinyl to allow the window to slide open without any problem. Make certain to use PTFE lubricant rather than an oil-based spray. The oil will simply attract more dirt which will make the window stickier.

 Secure a Wallpaper Seam

 Sometimes, wallpaper comes apart at a seam. Not only does it look bad, but it has the potential to get bigger and even more unsightly. Fix the seam before you end up with a more serious tear on your hands. Hold a warm, moist cloth over the seam to reactivate the wallpaper paste on the back of the wallpaper. In just a minute or two, the paste will rehydrate and become tacky again.

 Take some wallpaper seam sealer, or basic white glue, and insert it into the opening. Work the sealer behind the wallpaper and smooth the paper back to the wall with a roller. Clear off any excess glue that may seep out of the seam.
