Consent means having the right to say YES or NO, and the responsibility to ASK FIRST.
CONSENT: To make a mutual, voluntary, informed decision between clear minded, of age participants before ANY and EVERY sexual act. Sounds simple enough right? Consent is a mutual decison, a question- do you want to do this with me? Its Not what you're wearing. Its Not "oh well they wanted to because why else would they get so drunk". Its Not "well they've been with so many other people they obviously wanted to". I don't know about you, but i was never taught about consent in school. The way i learned about how important it is to ask first is through reading articles about assault victims voicing their pain. Reading about how someone's dignity and bodily autonomy was taken from them because they were "drunk anyway" or were known for having several sexual partners so "she would have said yes anyway" or simply because their choice of clothing was "provocative" so they were "asking for it". In school we were never taught to be comfortable with our bodies or taught to respect one another regardless of the way we dress or who we've been with. As a teenage girl, the message I received from society, school, and my peers was that being comfortable with your body= being promiscuous. And being promiscuous meant that you had "no self respect" so people will treat you as such- in other words if people think you're "a sure thing", your lack of consent wouldn't really count because if you don't respect your body, why should other people have to ask first? Can you see how messed up that is? That society teaches you to be ashamed of sex. That if you aren't ashamed your right to bodily autonomy doesn't have to be respected because you're "asking for it". But Now i know. I know that being ashamed doesn't mean i have self-respect. I know that being ashamed to even talk or think about sex is ridiculous because if we pretend it doesn't exist or put it on some high moral pedestal it makes it so much easier for rapists to get away with with their crimes. The shame we've been taught is what causes us to just accept half baked excuses like "she was wearing such skimpy clothing- she was asking for it" How about instead of assuming someone is asking for it, you just ASK FIRST? We need to teach ourselves, and generations to come that no matter what you want to do with someone, YOU ASK FIRST. It doesn't help we teach girls to cover up- YOUR CLOTHING IS NOT CONSENT. It doesn't help we teach girls that being open with your sexuality is morally wrong and that being "promiscuous" means that you'll be less respected as a human beinG- just because you are sexually active or have had several partners doesn't mean you're a "sure thing". CONSENT CANNOT BE ASSUMED. We need to be telling young people that its their body, and therefore their choice! At the end of the day no matter who they've been with or what they wear; they have the power to say yes or no. And in return they have the responsibility to ASK FIRST.

One man’s junk, another’s treasure...
Not too long ago I went rummaging around the treasures for sale at the Voortrekker Monument Antique Fair with my family. What a treat it was to discover so many old objects, with plenty stories hidden beneath the film of dust they’d developed over the years. If you’re like me and love antiques and spending an hour or two walking around a market, you’re in luck ‘cause the next fair is just around the corner on the 21st March!

PRETORIA CBD MORNING SHOOT
The soft morning lighting, quiet streets and the flutter of pigeons taking flight. What a fun adventure it was exploring the Pretoria CBD with Dennis Ngango a few weekends back. Here are some of my favourites from the shoot - taken predominately in church square and at the Union buildings in Pretoria.

UCC PHOTOSHOOT
On Saturday at the crack of dawn, actually slightly before dawn had actually cracked, we were up and ready...most of us...for a quick team shoot! Hoping that we looked at least half awake, we headed to University Road in Pretoria where Natalie De Canha took some awesome, morning street shots of Dennis, Sebastian and myself. The shoot was a ton of fun, accompanied by the BestMed running race in the background and trying to dodge the few cars on the road to get the ‘perfect’ shot, making for an adrenaline fuelled shoot - well at least for me and my slight road crossing phobia. We’re super excited about the photos and all that’s in store for Up and Coming Current! Here are some of our favourites from the shoot!

MARKET @ THE SHEDS
As of recent Pretoria seems to have exploded with a wealth of new and exciting things to see and experience - I had previously rarely ventured into the Pretoria CBD, but as of recent there have been multiple events held there that have caught my eye. One such event that I decided to check out was the 012 Central market@theSheds, held in the centre of Tshwane.  The space was filled with gourmet food - including some of South Africa’s best sparking wines - live music, art, fashion and design - a broad showcase of local talents in an urban, contemporary and vibey setting. Be sure to catch the next market that will be held on the 27 February and follow them on Facebook so that you never miss an event.
Here are a couple of shots I took while wondering around the market.
The UCC team - Sebastian, Dennis and myself -  had a group photoshoot this weekend, so keep an eye out for the photos that will be appearing here in the near future!

Spontaneous musical adventures.
If anyone knows me, they know that I’m a lady who likes her every minute of every day to be planned and scheduled, so when I was spontaneously given a free Mumford and Sons ticket last weekend I surprised even myself by jumping at the opportunity. And yay to messed up schedules, the performance was totally mesmerising scoring top marks from all angles from my side, not even the rain managed to dampen the mood. Check out some of the photos I managed to snap on my phone at the show.

#InspiredYouthSA
South Africa’s high profile role models are signing up to motivate the country’s youth through the ‘Inspired Youth’ programme that the UK based Greg Secker Foundation is launching in Cape Town and Johannesburg in late February and early March.
TV presenter Katlego Maboe, award winning YouTube personality Theodora Lee and chart topping musician Jimmy Nevis are the first three speakers confirmed for the opening event in Cape Town on 27 February.
They will be joined on stage at the one-day inspirational workshops by renowned entrepreneurs, sports heroes and health experts in presenting thought-provoking options, personal insights and Q&A sessions that provide young people, regardless of background, with the strategies and confidence to achieve their full potential and realise their destiny.
Katlego Maboe, the host of the Expresso Show and Strictly Come Dancing SA on SABC3, continues to rise to new heights as a role model the country’s youth aspire to emulate. From singing our national anthem for the Springboks to acting as Goodwill Ambassador for HOPE Cape Town, his exceptional presentation skills and relaxed style leave his audience hanging on every word.
