This is a friendly reminder to never, ever publish your book with a publishing company that charges you to publish with them. That is a vanity press, which makes money by preying on authors. They charge you for editing, formatting, cover art, and more. With most of these companies, you will never seen a cent of any royalties made from sale of your book. A legitimate publishing company only makes money when you make money, they will never charge you to publish with them. If a company approaches you and says "Hey, we'll publish your book, just pay us X amount of money," tell them to go fuck themself and block them.

Random ways of twisting the Chosen One trope I thought of when I was washing my hair:
The villain is the chosen one, destined for greater goodness. And because of that, every evil act he tries to commit ends up helping people instead.
The chosen one never showed up, and the villain actually won. Fifty years later, some old man on an isolated farmland learns that he was actually the chosen one all along, and tries to compensate for his lost years by embarking on a quest to save the world at age sixty-three.
There's an entire magical organisation dedicated to sending the right prophecies to the right people, and our main character just got accepted for a job intership as a prophecy deliver.
A pregnant woman learns that the child inside her will risk their life on a dangerous quest when they turn sixteen, destined to either end the world or save it. So she decides to finish the quest herself instead, so that her child can live a normal life.
The prophecy specifically states that the chosen one has to be a man, so MC transitions into a girl in order to dodge the call. Or vice versa.
The chosen one dies at the very beginning, killed by one of their friends, which then takes up their identity. Will they be able to convince the populace that they're the one mentioned by the prophecy? Will they even have a chance at defeating the villain since they're not really the chosen one? Will they inevitably end up becoming the mask and losing sense of who they are? Who knows!
Being the chosen one is an actual job with salaries and benefits, but it's so awful no one wants to take it. But when MC's debtors knock at their house, they have no choice but to sign up for the job in hope of a better life.

A Review of Neanthadral Opens The Door to the Universe
Mild Spoiler Warning & Trigger Warning for Discussion of Suicide & Abuse
Tumblr media
Can you believe it? I literally finished it under 24 hours, like all four hundred pages under a damn day (well technically, I started it yesterday at like seven pm and finished it at four pm today). That was how addictive it was, I just kept reading through it. Flipping through it. I couldn't believe I thought my sister was ridiculous for buying this.
Unlike most YA novels I've read, our protagonist (Cliff Hubbard, AKA the titular Neanderthral) narration is entertaining. He's self deprecating, but he isn't pathetic. He doesn't really put himself down for attention, he's just shaped that way.
Before the story started, his brother, Shane, committed suicide and that pretty much made his life worse. Then, his life took a turn for the... greater weirder when one of the school's assholes Aaron Zimmerman got a concussion and told Cliff God came to him with a list. A list on how to fix the school.
I was never one for religious books, or books with religious themes. I'm just not interested. But this one handled it well! (And most of the supporting cast are err... atheists, so that's also unique. One of the main characters turns agnostic by the end, no elaboration on that.)
Cliff is huge, as in GIANT huge (that's where his cruel nickname comes from), but don't let that fool you. No matter how much his dad tells him to join the football team, he's basically a nerd at heart. (Although he can beat an asshole up easily. I'm not sure if he needs the football team as much as the football teams needed him).
I didn't really get most of the references, but I was so invested in Aaron's and Cliff's bromance. Their friendship went from 'Yeah, I only went along with his List for the jokies' to 'I would DIE for Aaron (well he never said that, but you can assume that)'.
They act like straight teenage guys, you know, ass, boobs and girls, but they also got a lot of chemistry together. Honestly, they're one of the few bromances I don't find myself shipping romantically. I just love them.
I forgot to elaborate on his list, but they were basically pointers on how to make their school better;
Put an end to Niko (one of the bullies obviously)'s bullying
Call the JTs (group of crazy Christian teens) to repentance
Remind Mr. Spinelli (an asshole teacher of theirs) why he chose to teach.
Show Frankie's gang (notorious gang of drug dealers) a better way
Find and stop HAL (a hacker)
Yes sir, I busted the book out!
Of course, it's left ambiguous on if Aaron did see God. Weirdly, the book also implies that Shane had a hand in transporting the message to him? The book does lean towards it being the result of his brain damage, but personally I liked to think there was a God sending him a message. Not a traditional God in our religions, no, I think a God.
Granted, I am an atheist so I don't have a horse in this race.
But seriously. Aaron got the best character development in this book. He went from a handsome, sexist douchebag to a well... handsome, loveable douchebag. Seriously. It wasn't just the concussion changing him, he really does change for the better. Albeit, he's still a teenager so he got a far way to go in terms of change but this is still better than nothing.
And did I mentioned Tegan, Cliff's girlfriend? I was worried she'd be those girlfriend characters that are only used to further the protagonist's development, but she has her own arc, personality, and hurts.
If I was a straight man, I'd fall for her. That's a queen.
But this topic does touch on some heavy topics. They may be hard to read through. For one example, Cliff has flashbacks to Shane's graphic suicide a few times. So, it might be triggering for any readers sensitive to that.
Cliff's dad also physically abuses him a lot, so that's also another sensitive topic the book touches on. But don't worry, his life gets better from here. A lot better. Everything I discussed in this post is just a tip of the iceberg, the four hundred page novel is a LOT more than that.
Overall, this is one of the few books I'd give a five star. Captivating, emotional, fun story, fun characters, beautiful themes. I adore everything about it. I wish I had read it earlier, but better now than never, right?
Please check it out if you love a YA novel that isn't centered around a romance. It's beautiful, fun, amusing.
And that was all that unmotivater wrote.

How do I make writer friends on here?? PLEASE.
I mostly write screenplays! Currently working on two projects, because I can never be focused on one thing at time (blame it on the 'tism).
The older idea of the two is called SUPER ZOMBIE MAN. It's about a famous rude scientist who gets blown up and the intern who finds him as a zombie. It has pathetic people, homoerotic rivals and a genderfluid Frankenstein-like monster.
The newer idea doesn't have a title yet. It's a fantasy idea set on a historical Earth, with five different protagonists, one of them being a woman of great magic potential, who have to come together to protect her. Stoic wizards, aromantic entertainers, giant bald men, it has it all!!

Some of My Favorite Ways to Describe a Character Who’s Sick
pressing their forehead into something cool or comfortable (this could be an array of things. the table, the floor, someones leather jacket, their water bottle, the countertop)
warm to the touch, or heat radiating from them (could be noticed if someone’s gauging their temperature with their hands, hugging them, or just generally touching them)
leaning into people’s touch, or just spontaneously leaning on them (like pressing into their hand when someone’s checking their temp, or just, like, literally walking up and laying their head on them from fatigue. bonus points if the character is usually feral and the other is scared to engage™︎)
falling asleep all over the place (at the dinner table, on their homework, in the car, in the bathroom — just being so exhausted from doing literally nothing)
being overly emotional (crying over things that don’t usually bother them, like their siblings arguing, or their homework, or literally just nothing)
stumbling/careening/staggering into things (the wall, furniture, other people. there is no coordination in feverish brains. running into chairs, hitting the door, falling over the couch, anything and everything)
slurring their words (could be from fatigue or pain. connecting words that shouldn’t be connected, murdering all of their conversations with the excessive use of ‘mm’ and ‘nn’ in place of words) (this is my favorite thing ever)
being overly touchy (basically like a sick kid — just hold them, please. do that thing where you brush their hair back out of their face, or rub circles on their back, or snuggle them. they won’t care. bonus points if this is also the feral character and they refuse to believe it afterwards)
being extremely resistant to touch (flinching away when they usually don’t so someone can’t feel the fever, not letting themselves be touched because they’re so tired they just know they’ll be putty in their hands if they do)
growing aggressive or being extremely rude (it’s a defense mechanism — they feel vulnerable and are afraid of being manipulated or deceived while they’re ill)
whimpering/whining/groaning (this was in my “characters in pain” post but it’s so good that i’m putting it here too. this shite is gold, especially if it’s just an involuntary reaction to their symptoms)
having nightmares caused by a fever and/or delirium (crying and murmuring in their sleep, or being awake but completely out of it and convinced they’re somewhere else)
making themselves as small as possible (curling up into a ball everywhere they lay, hunching over slightly when standing, wrapping their arms around themselves)
TW for vomiting below cut !!
sleeping in the bathroom floor because they keep getting sick over and over (bonus if someone finds them all weak and pitiful. bonus bonus if they find them there in the morning only to learn they’ve been there all night)
using their hands/other body parts to clamp over their mouth so nothing can come out (like pulling their knees up to their chest and using that, or like, their arm, y’know) (~maccreadysbaby who has emetophobia suddenly gets very awkward about this post~) (~yes i have a phobia of puke and still write this happening to my characters, shut up~) (~it’s about the hurt/comfort okay~)
sympathy pukers (people who aren’t the sick ones but get nauseous/vomit when they see someone else throw up) (~aka me~) (~okay I’m done now~)
dry heaving (it’s gross, but good for making your characters absolutely freaking miserable)
rolling/churning/spinning/cramping/ lurching and all those awesome words that describe what stomachs do when sick (i hate these words with a deep, fiery passion. but they’re good for writing or whatever)

I don't have any cute origins. I just thought of Normani's Motivation and added an un- prefix to flip the meaning.
Tumblr media
Behind the username!!
Fleurtygurl 💚
My username "fleurtygurl" was inspired by a shop I saw when I went to New Orleans. "Fleur" means flower in French. And "fleurty" sounds a lot like "flirty," which I thought was the cutest thing ever... and thus fleurty gurl was born! I will say I'm not a flirty person at all tho, so I kinda like how I have an ironic username.
Does anyone else have a little story behind their usernames?
