Romeo and Juliet
Final Illustration #20
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I started with the bodice for this design and I painted the base of the sun print with gouache paint using a different shade of pink for each stripe. I decided to use puff binder for the center of the sun as I felt as though it would be an interesting way to add more texture. And I once again used fabric to create the sleeves and make them have more of a padded effect.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the trousers I started with hot glueing the fabric down then I painted on top of it with gouache paint before adding details like the veins and some gems. I also painted a crescent moon shape which I added on the waist. For the collar I traced round the outline shape then I painted the lace with gouache paint. I didn’t realise until I came to stick the head onto this Illustration that the collar isn’t actually as visible as I would’ve hoped as it is part of the design that it is heart shaped.

Romeo and Juliet
Final Illustration #19
This is the illustration I chose to do on A1 paper for my Romeo and Juliet designs
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I created hearts for the sleeves by cutting out the shape in fabric the overlocking the edges to stop them fraying. Then I used brusho inks to dye them different shades of pink. I did initially add beads hanging from the ends of the hearts but I did end up moving them onto the skirt as I think it looked better. I also ended up hot gluing on some gems onto the bottom of the hearts to make them more interesting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I then added on some gathered mesh and netted fabric on the shoulders. To do this I sewed both fabrics together with one line then I pulled one of the threads to gather it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I painted most of the bodice with gouache then I used some scrap fabric for the bottom of the skirt. Although the fabric was already pink I did dye it more so it matched better with my colour scheme. I then created an outline of Romeo and Juliet from the film and I added cotton to the bottom which I gathered to replicate how Juliet’s dress looked in the final scene where they both take their lives.

Romeo and Juliet
Final Illustration #18
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the skirt of this illustration I started off by using fabric on the outsides and also on parts of the banners at the bottom. Trying to figure out where to place the fabric was quite complicated and confusing. I painted the center of the skirt using different shades of grey to try replicate how pleats would look on an actual skirt. I also drew on small skulls. However I’m not too keen on how these turned out and I with I had spent a bit more time on drawing the out just so it looked a bit less messy and rushed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then for the bodice majority of the details are painted with a white pencil outline. I used white cotton for the background and I also used some of the tubes I made out off black fabric just to add some more texture.

Romeo and Juliet
Final Illustration #17
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Firstly I painted the bodice and sleeves with gouache paints. Then I add fabric on top to create the banners. This was tricker than I expected because the shapes were quite small so I kept making it too big by accident. I then added gouache on the fabric to add some detail before painting the family names onto them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Majority of the skirt was quite simple to create for this design as it was just fabric which I stuck down then painted to add some depth. My favourite part of this illustration is the wings at the waist. I used gouache paint and I think they turned out really nicely. I always struggle when drawing wings as the shapes can be quite complicated however I think these ones turned out quite well. I did end up adding an outline with white pencil just to make the shapes more clear.

Romeo and Juliet
Final Illustration #16
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When I first started this illustration I painted majority of it grey. I soon came to realise that I used a colour that was way too dark for the colour palette so I had to go over it in an attempt to fix it. However since I had already added all the details to the bodice i could only really change the trousers. But I think this worked out quite well as the darkness fits with the poison and death which the veins on the bodice are themed around.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I created more wadded fabric shapes for the shoulder pads and the rest of the details are painted with gouache paint. Except from the veins which are made of fabric which I folded in half and sewed together so then when I turned them inside out they looked like a tube.
As you can see from the photos I repainted the trousers quite a few times as I couldn’t get them just how I wanted. I ended up using one of the film scene textures from my sketchbook research. I really love how it turned out as I think it was a great way to add a bit more detail as I felt as though this design was a bit simple before hand. For the family name banner I used fabric and then painted the background parts to give the illusion that the pet with the name is further forward than the rest.

Romeo and Juliet
Final Illustration #15
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I created the heart the same way as I did for the last illustration because I think it was really effective how it has the 3D part and then the rest is painted and flat. I also added some gems and I used fabric for the sleeve.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the skirt I used a mix of white cotton and gouache. I used dark and light shades to help create the illustration of creases and folds in the garment. I also added my poison vein print onto the top part of the skirt with fabric tubes which I sewed together aswell as lace to help merge both layers of the skirt together. To finish it off I added more gems coming down from the lace.

Romeo and Juliet
Final Illustration #14
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the skirt I decided to try replicate the pattern I created from the candle scene in the 1996 film of Romeo and Juliet. I decided to use watercolours so I could get the colours to blend nicely. Once I had painted it I glued on fabric pleats to the bottom of the skirt and then continued the pattern slightly onto there so it looked more cohesive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the heart on the bodice I made half of it out of fabric which I added wadding into to make it more 3d. Then I painted the other half with gouache. I really like how the mix between 2d and 3d elements looks it is very effective in my opinion and makes the illustration a lot more interesting. For the sleeve I used hot glue to stick the fabric down. I tried to gather the fabric as best as I could to give a more padded effect.

Macbeth
Final Illustration #13
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I started with the skirt of this illustration as I was quite intimidated buy the bodice as it has a lot of different parts that are all quite detailed. I once again used bubble wrap to create the print on the second layer. The rest of the skirt was done with gouache paint and white cotton.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the frog foot and bat wing I used the same technique as one of the previous Macbeth designs. I painted mesh fabric with red and yellow watercolours. Then used hot glue and black fabric to outline it. I also made the lizard foot the same as the last one except this time I didn’t have access to a sewing machine so I couldn’t put wadding in it. Therefore I just made sure to use a lot of fabric so it would create a padded effect. The other three elements were mainly done with gouache paint and then I added some extra details such as the wool on the feathers to add more interest.

Macbeth
Final Illustration #12
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I actually struggled quite a bit initially with this illustration as I kept using the wrong shades of colours especially on the legs. You can see in the photos that I ended up re doing the bottom part of the trousers 3 times until I was happy with it. Like all my other Illustrations I started with making a base by putting the fabric where I wanted and painted the rest of the areas.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the details I added a mix of ink and painted hot glue to the neckline as-well as a crown on the waist which I painted with gouache. The main part of this illustration is the gems that “fall” from the bottom of the bodice. Before I added in this part I didn’t like how the illustration was looking but I think it really brought it all together. I also included some decorative red ribbon to add a bit more interest instead of it all being the same.

Macbeth
Final Illustration #11
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I started by using bubble wrap to create the print on the bottom and top layer of the skirt. I used a mixture of red white and black. I then made the feather layer. I didn’t really have a plan on how I was going to do this. I ended up using gouache and puff binding for some and then I used a decorative thread that remind me of the texture of a feather for the others. I really love how these turned out I think the mix of textures is very effective. I also added a layer of black painted waves as I thought it looked too busy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the shoulder details I used fabrics. For the lizard leg I used wadding after I had overlocked around the shape. I also dyed it black. I was initially planning on having the whole thing wadded and made of fabric however I realised the shape was a bit too intricate so I made the toes 2d by painting them strip to the illustration.
For the over shoulder I painted a mesh fabric red with watercolours then I used my black fabric tubes which I initially made for my Romeo and Juliet designs to outline the shape.

Macbeth
Final Illustration #10
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For this illustration a lot of the elements where made separately and the put together. I started with sticking down the fabric which I later on painted with different great tones to add some depth. Then i created the hand and crown shape on a different piece of paper. I simply painted them with gouache paints.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Instead of using red embroidery I decided to use red hand prints to create the main part of the blood print. I was inspired to do this because this design is mainly based off lady Macbeth when she hallucinates about there still being blood on her hands. I thought this was a fun way to make the illustration more interesting. I also added some gems and hot glue which I painted over.
And I painted on the cracks and lace with gouache paints.
