Screen printing day 2.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thought that because this is a bigger screen and more has been exposed the screen would not block but again after the 3rd print it was coming out fuzzy and the ink wasn’t coming out the best, so I had to go through the same process of washing and drying them. This took me 6 hours to complete. All I have left to do is heat press them.

Evaluation
I have not yet finished my final piece but will still continue working on that after the deadline to get it ready for my exhibition.
Since the start of the project, I think my skills have developed and I have learnt new things like screen printing and also have improved my communication skills. I have also developed myself as a designer and am familiar in what I want to do for my career which is art that is used for good and progression in society. I chose “The Fall of The Spanish Armada” concept because it intrigued me with its very detailed events and how Elizabeth handled the threat of a Spanish invasion bravely as a woman who was looked down on by society for many reasons like illegitimacy and being un-wed. My intentions behind this project were to re-tell the story of the battles that took place during the attempt of invading England my Phillip II of Spain. When picking out colours and creating the tapestry I did it, so I am not biased as I don’t want to demonise one side and praise another because when it comes to war both sides are wrong.
My research was mainly gathered from online sources and articles that I could find about the war I did have previous knowledge but I still fact checked everything to make sure I am certain of what I am doing. I did go to many exhibitions which is an improvement from last year and my previous 2 projects.
If I was to start this project over, I would definitely organise myself better as I feel like I was all over the place and nothing was in order. I would also blog more of my process as I kept forgetting that I should blog what I was doing.
Overall, I am pleased with how much I have developed as a designer and how my project has been developed. I took part in many workshops and talks which also improved my skills and knowledge. This year has been good there has been times where I didn't like what I was doing or projects that gave me nothing but headaches (AMAZAON) but to conclude I’m grateful for what I’ve gained and will use this in HNC next year.

HND Show (ethics included)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next year I will join HND so i went to their show and i really liked it, not being biased but it has been the best one i’ve been to simply because of how everything was laid out the artists explained the work so i am more aware of their concept. There was a lot of paper used for one of the pieces which could come under as ethically wrong because of the trees that have been cut down. Also another ethical issue could be the excessive power usage like the multiple phones which were constantly on charge or the tv screens that were used drained a lot of power.

These are the pages from my springhouse book, the project got cancelled which is unfortunate because i really liked what this stood for and who the target audience was. The afghan refugees who came to england could have benefitted from this in some way. I do hope this book could still be published but in the meantime i will still finish it off because i don’t want to leave it half complete.

Men who inspire.
Many women are inspirational but long side them i am also truly inspired by...
Muhammed Ali he dedicated his post-retirement years to philanthropy and humanitarianism, pursuits that took him all around the world: to Iraq, to negotiate the release of American hostages; to Cuba, to deliver medical aid; to Afghanistan and North Korea, on goodwill missions with the UN. (https://www.aarp.org/entertainment/television/info-2021/muhammad-ali.html)
Martin Luther King Jr was a man of action with the ability to reach many people through his gift of speech and great leadership in the harsh times of civil rights discrimination to build equality amongst the nation. He was also another individual i studied in history and his story of standing against injustices is similar to how Elizabeth stood up for herself when people would tell her to marry. He used peaceful protests to get the outcome he wanted which was successful.
My project is about the fall of the Spanish armada during the Elizabethan Era and also links in with women empowerment but there are men who have been inspirational and continue you to do so this all links back to the ethics and how designers should include people of all genders, ethnicity and sexuality and not be biased towards one or the other. However i will focus on women empowerment because that is who Elizabeth was and how women today still are looked down upon.

Women who inspire (ethics)
Angelina Jolie is actress who is also a humanitarian that is known for her work in the middle east and her projects that is in support of saving the bee’s. Although a mother of six, Jolie pauses her mom duties to find time to visit developing countries, improve the lives of refugees, get involved with charitable work, create foundations and fund schools in other countries.
She is a women who also inspires me to create my art work for good and betterment of communities. She has been an advocate against war and recently showed her support for the Ukrainian people. Her past has been very controversial and she also faced a-lot of problems but like Elizabeth she came out better.
Jacinda Arden is New Zealand’s youngest ever female prime minister – in 2018, she became the second world leader to give birth while in office. Later that year, she gave a speech at the Nelson Mandela Peace summit with three-month-old Neve in her lap. Plus, she’s clearly exceptionally skilled at multitasking, and she’s been applauded for how well she responded to the Coronavirus pandemic. In comparison to other countries, New Zealand has acted swiftly and strictly. They’ve also done best in delaying of the spread of the virus. The country has around five million citizens and yet, in total, has just 25 deaths. (https://www.marieclaire.co.uk/entertainment/people/jacinda-ardern-popularity-715953)
She is huge inspiration to me as she runs a country with so much other stuff going on like being a mother and looking after her family. However Elizabeth had no child she also had many responsibilities as a queen who led a country these two individuals are so similar but ruled in 2 different time periods when society was different and how women were viewed upon.
Both these women are in opposite fields of work however they both stand on the same ethical view point and that is to help society economically, environmentally and socially to make an impact in the world

J.K Rowling
An inspirational women to most people is J.K Rowling she supports a number of causes through her charitable trust, Volant. She is also the founder and president of the international children's non-profit organisation Lumos, which works to end the institutionalisation of children globally and ensure all children grow up in a safe and caring environment. She is also the author of one of my favourite books “Harry Potter” she has inspired many people using her books and the characters she created. However many will disagree with this statement because she has had many controversies like her on twitter which she said On June 6, 2020, “people who menstruate,” apparently taking issue with the fact that the story did not use the word women. “‘People who menstruate.’ I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?”. This sparked alot of backlash which she then said “I respect every trans person’s right to live any way that feels authentic and comfortable to them. I’d march with you if you were discriminated against on the basis of being trans. At the same time, my life has been shaped by being female. I do not believe it’s hateful to say so”.
She has done many great things and inspired many people but she has had her mistakes and downfalls but regardless of good and bad her work around the world has lifted many people up so i think it is important to research into her and how she relates to my concept which is about the “The Fall of The Spanish Armada” which was commanded by Elizabeth.

Women Empowerment 2022
There was many issues that women faced during the Elizabethan era that not even Elizabeth the queen of England could avoid. Even now many women around the world don’t have the freedom they want but compared to t past there has been many improvements.
What is women's empowerment?
Women empowerment is promoting women's sense of self-worth, our ability to make our own choices, and our right to influence social change for ourselves and others.
Abortion was not common during the past and was also considered a sin also women who have not yet had a child or were married were not respected in society. In todays society its common for a women to not be married or be married its completely our choice and we are not looked down upon. However in some places abortion is still illegal or seen as a bad thing such like in Texas it is illegal long as a fetal heartbeat is heard.
Aside from Elizabeth there has been many other women who have inspired me from journalists to humanitarians to singers who have told us their stories.
This topic links in with ethics because women empowerment stands for to understand, criticise, and correct how gender operates within our moral beliefs and practices in society.

For my final piece i will create 2 holes in the corners of the tapestry so i could add rope to them to hang it from the ceiling. I am using rope to symbolise how the crew would use rope on the sail to steer the ship with the help of the wind but rope was also used to out cargo together or even tie up captured Spanish soldiers. I will use the eyelets to give it a clean finish and to prevent the hole from getting any bigger then what it needs to be.
I wanted to get a 50-100 mm thick rope but have decided with a much thinner rope around 30mm thick because i don’t want the rope to get that much attention from the viewer as that is only there to hold it up in place.

Sketchbook Work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sketches of my B-HEARD logo and some notes on the battle of grave-lines and how I wanted to portray the events taken out.
On the right image I drew a symbol which may be printed on the tapestry I’m still considering if I should stitch it on or paint it on since I’m not longer doing foiling and with the time that I have left I might just stitch it on.

Tapestry plan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are some of the sketches I did in my sketchbook of what I visioned my tapestry to look like. I drew the ships in the places that need to be so I can plan how much space is required between them. I also used mini diagrams of certain areas of the tapestry this is so I could get a up close visual of what I want to put in that area.

Screen Printing shirts for exhibition.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When we started to print, we first did it on the test shirt and it came out perfect, so we moved on to the main shirts. When I printed on the 3rd try the screen was getting block because we used thick ink so the yellow could stain more on a black shirt. The only way we could get the best prints that had good quality was for us to print twice and then wash the screen. This was so annoying to do because when we washed the screen, we had to wait 20 mins for it to dry in the dryer. We spent 7 hours and finally we completed the front and side print, but we still have the back of the shirt to finish.

Exhibiton
Tumblr media
We went to an exhibition in the Birmingham library which was about how my city became so diverse and the struggle people went through to get to this point. It was very intriguing, and I learnt a lot of new stories through photographs. We also managed to get our own photographs in front of a backdrop.
This link to my work because since 1588 England has developed a lot from more women empowerment and how wars are fought differently like we know have advanced weaponry which isn’t a good thing.

Here is some of the sketches I did for my tapestry. When I created these sketches I had no idea of how I will stitch the boats and what colours to do or even considered any mistakes that I could make. I have made so much changes to my original plan because I made a lot of mistakes and some of my ideas couldn't be created because of time and resources. My idea of foiling typography wont be apart of the project because of the fabric I’m using will not print it but I do still want to experiment with foiling in the future.
