Ok, so I saw this and thought "AO3 can't possibly run smoothly on the 3DS," because why would it? So, I tried it myself, and…

…it's glorious. I honestly wasn't sure it would even run, but it loaded just as fast as a regular computer or phone, runs very smoothly, and it actually looks good. But we don't want to stare at the homescreen the whole time, so let's see what else we can do.

Look, it's me! Signing in was very easy, and although my username didn't quite fit on the page, everything else looked great. Now, time for a real challenge.

This is "But can it run Doom?" by gifbot, and it's exactly what you'd expect. On a normal device, it allows everyone currently "reading" to play Doom together (kind of like a "chat plays" stream if you've seen those). But will I be able to run Doom on my vanilla 3DS?

Unfortunately, no. This was a bit too much for the beloved handheld console. It couldn't even load a still image of the game. (It did load the control panel thing, but I forgot to take a picture of that.)

It works just fine for reading, though. Shoutout to SpaceStoutland for writing "Leaving the Arcade," the only fic on AO3 for Nintendo Badge Arcade. Again, it's very smooth, and the default font size is actually readable. It almost feels like AO3 was made for the 3DS. 10/10 experience, would recommend.

The exact model shown here is a New 3DS XL (New is the marketing term, not condition), but I would assume it also works on the original 3DS line.

I do have some more things planned for Celestial Shift. I don't want to go into too much detail right now, but the next story will be a oneshot which introduces Moon and Ginger's kids, and after that will be an angsty alternate ending to the first story (which was originally supposed to be 1-2 chapters, but is growing longer). I have more ideas for what's after that, but nothing concrete yet.

A useful thing to know about AO3 tags is that they're wrangled by humans. A human being will read your tag, understand what it means*, and then connect that tag in the backend system to other tags that mean the same thing (if there are any)

that's why, for example, the tags

and a million more versions are all searchable and filterable if you just tag one of them. A Tag Wrangler (the job title of a human volunteer who manages AO3 tags) has made sure that AO3 understands that those are all synonyms, so AO3 treats them that way.

When you're tagging your fic, or searching for a fic, or filtering a tag to find or remove works from the list you do not have to use every possible version of a tag. You just need to pick one - unless using more is a stylistic choice you're making, in which case have at it.

*or research what it means - which is why wranglers really appreciate it if you put (OC) behind the name of your original characters so that they don't have to scour every source they can find to see if it's a named background character in canon.

i had a thought of "do people not know what AUs are anymore?" and then i remembered nobody explains fandom stuff to new people anymore so it is entirely plausible people genuinely don't know what AUs are and nobody has explained it to them, so for today's lucky 10,000:

"AU" stands for "Alternate Universe" or "Alternative Universe" (same difference) and is basically any thought scenario for a fandom that isn't canon and can't fit within the canon universe. If it takes place in the canon universe but something is notably different, that is typically what's known as a "Canon divergent AU," because it diverges from canon.

an AU can be absolutely anything. There's a couple of widespread pan-fandom au scenarios that often get thrown around, like coffee shop aus, genderbend aus, hanahaki aus (hanahaki is a whole thing in itself i'd recommend researching on your own), etc. One you might hear sometimes is "crossover AU" which is when you have characters from one fandom interacting with characters from another.

You can have as many aus as you want. They can be whatever you want and you can do whatever you want in them. It's a sandbox for you to play around in and explore how things would be different or how the characters would act in those circumstances or environments. Maybe they have different relationships with each other. Maybe they behave slightly differently. Or you can just say "Okay, [x] is true. How did they get here? How would things have to be different for this to occur?" which can also be fun.

If you are ever confused about why people ship something that seems completely out of the blue or doesn't make sense to you in the canon setting, there's a good chance they like it in an AU setting! Not everything everybody is interacting with is necessarily the canon! Not everybody wants things to exist in canon and just want to explore playing dolls in a different sandbox and that's okay. And their sandbox might look a lot different than yours, and that's also okay. You have the freedom to make your sandbox whatever you please. Do whatever you want forever. Get funky with it. AUs are fun.

Chapter 22 of The Life of a Star Has Been Published

Chapter 22: Say Nope to the Mope

Preview:

After much deliberation, Sun was left with no choice but to take Becky’s advice.  He had spent the entire day wrestling with the simplicity of it.  Just say hi?  It couldn’t really be that easy.  Sun said hi to every kid who entered the Daycare, and while he considered all of the children to be his little friends to a degree, very few went out of their way to approach him later.  That is, unless they wanted something, like a bag of snacks opened or a band-aid for their paper cut or to show him their newest drawing.  Very few were friends with him like Cassie was.  There had to be so much more to it than that.

What was the first thing he had ever said to Cassie?  His system archived much of his memories for later, the ones that didn’t need to be readily available at a moment’s notice.  Recent things and important things were never archived.  His first words to Cassie were not considered either.

At his insistence, his system retrieved and decompressed the appropriate memory file.

Well, he had welcomed her, like any good Daycare Attendant would.  And…he had reminded her that she needed a guest profile.  Then he introduced her to the cubbies and tried to form a temporary profile for her until the official one was made.

None of that was very helpful.

But he supposed he had started with a greeting.  Maybe he was getting too far ahead of himself.  Maybe…Becky was right.  He need only start with a brief hello, Moon would respond…hopefully, and the rest would come naturally.  Simple!

Sun took the orange crayon in hand, clutching it tightly.  Normally, he wrote notes to the janitors in red.  Because he was usually angry with them.  Orange was…hopefully a happy color.  Well, everyone knew that yellow was the happiest color.  That must have been why Sun was yellow.  But it didn’t show up so well on paper, so…

After a few more seconds of hesitation, Sun scrawled two large letters on the page that had been sitting on the table before him for the last ten minutes.  “HI”  Staring down at the single syllable, he began to wonder if it really was too simple, just as he had originally believed.

What if Moon didn’t know who it was from?

“FROM SUN”, he added to the bottom.  Along with a drawing of a sun just the way the kids drew it, with little lines radiating around a circle to signify the rays.  They didn’t resemble his rays, though.  Drawing a second sun, he added triangular rays around this one.

Longish post with Celestial Shift spoilers below

I was playing ACNH when I realized that there were yellow and blue suits, which reminded me of Sun and Moon's party outfits. So, I went to Photopia, set up the party room, and took some screenshots of the boys.

They don't look quite as good as I wanted them to, but this was as close as I could get it. Just pretend those lighter skin patches connect into a crescent shape. At least the suits are pretty much exactly how I imagined them. But I couldn't just stop there, of course, so I made Vanessa, Gregory, Chloe, and Ginger.

These ones were a little harder, because I only had concrete ideas for Sun and Moon's outfits when writing. Vanessa's dress had to be based off of Princess Quest, of course, and you know Gregory's rocking his Freddy Fazbear sneakers. I wanted Chloe and Ginger's dresses to complement their respective guys, so Chloe's is red(ish), and Ginger's is green. There was also a purple dress that looked good for Ginger, but you can't just have a character wear purple in FNAF without someone (me) overanalyzing it. Also, Chloe's hair is supposed to be darker than Vanessa's, but her exact hair color isn't in the game.

After that, I did Henry and Charlie Emily, and the Afton kids.

Unlike the living guests, the ghosts got to choose their own party outfits. While some chose clothes from when they were alive, others decided to make new ones (y'know, with ghost magic). Since he's the Adult Supervision, Henry's wearing the fanciest suit I have in the game, while Charlie's is just indulging the headcanon that green is her favorite color. Mike thinks his contrasting jacket is super cool, and C.C. and Elizabeth's outfits have bits of their canon outfits (C.C.'s striped tie, and Elizabeth's... almost everything), plus some Baby pigtails for Lizzy.

Then the MCI kids.

Gabriel, Jeremy, and Cassidy's outfits are basically the same logic as Sun and Moon's (just matching the color of their animatronics), while Susie's is based on her dress seen in Fruity Maze, and Fritz is dressed as a not-quite-Foxy pirate because he's silly like that. While Cassidy wasn't shown in Celestial Shift, it seemed wrong not to include her with the others. In this au, the other ghosts made a deal with her to actually let William die if they got the chance to try and kill him again, since he would only find yet another way to break free and kill more kids. After realizing they were right, she reluctantly agreed, but she's still mad she can't give him Ultimate Custom Nightmares anymore.

Speaking of, here's bonus William locked in another room (Cassidy snuck in there and gagged him after he and Mike finished talking).

As per the deal, Cass gets to give him one last round of her "Living Hell" to get the last of her rage out before he goes to actual hell (the afterlife works like this because I found it convenient and funny). That's what she's doing for most of the party, which is why she isn't mentioned.

The real-world reason she wasn't there is actually that I just didn't want to deal with her at the time. She was originally going to be at the party and have a line referencing UCN, but I cut it because all of the lore and theories around her were confusing to me. Fortunately, I'm learning that I don't have to (and really can't) make this AU perfectly canon compliant, so now Cassidy is here.

Most of these aren't completely accurate (Sun and Moon's skin, almost everyone's hair, etc.), but they were very fun to make. Since premade clothing items have better textures, I tried to do this without custom clothes (I did use custom designs for face paint and the walls' checkered trim though), but I might make different, more story-accurate outfits in the future.

Although you might not be able to tell here, these human Sun and Moon designs are inspired by/based on some of @shandzii's older art.
