On Pain

It’s been almost a week since that time you told me you were not yet ready to be attached. I still feel the pain, but it’s slowly dying down thanks to my friends who have always been there for me to make me forget. It’s helpful to be surrounded by them, actually. On top of that, I started compiling my notes into one document. It sort of made my brain think of other things.

Normally, I would think of the pain first. I would remember how you told me that you felt everything was going too fast. I would remember how I cried in my friend’s car, not knowing how to express how I’m feeling. I would remember how I cursed you in my head in every way possible. I would remember how I would randomly remember all the things we planned, and how everything crumbled just because you did not feel the same way anymore.

The pain made me remember, but it made me forget as well. I forgot all the good things because of the pain.

Maybe I should start remembering you as the person who comforted me when I went through a bad relationship, because that’s where everything started.

Maybe I should start remembering how you would randomly hit me up with a message asking me if I’m okay just because you saw me tweet something out of frustration (when in fact, it’s just my tired brain talking).

Maybe I should start remembering how you would ask me to send selfies so you’d feel better, and I’d ask you to do the same because it would make me feel better, too. (”Selfie, please.”)

Maybe I should start remembering how I would rant about things that frustrate me and how you would tell me to calm down, and to be the better person. (Remember during exam week, when I told you that I walked out of the library because people were being noisy? You were a lot of help that time, and it kept my emotions grounded.)

Maybe I should start remembering how you would comfort me at the end of a bad day, and reassuring me that everything will be okay. Maybe I should start remembering the times when I’d cry to you and you’d tell me that I should redeem myself. (”That’s okay. Just do your best again, okay?”)

Maybe I should start remembering the lovely things you said to me. (I can’t specify one because all the things you said to me were lovely, even though they weren’t true.)

Maybe I should start remembering those plans of seeing each other. (”Let’s go to La Union the next time I visit you.” “Will we still be able to meet during my Bar review?”)

Maybe I should start remembering you as the person who accepted me for who I am, despite my flaws and insecurities. Maybe I should start remembering you as the one who made me show my biggest and greatest smile. (”Your smile is so pretty.”)

Maybe I should start remembering you as the person you were before the pain and the separation.

Maybe I should start remembering you as the one who had my heart. (”Mahal kita.”)

Probably in another universe, the stars would align perfectly. In time, love. I know you would still have to find yourself and that’s okay. There’s still a little bit of hope in my heart, and I know you had good intentions. I’ll still pray for you and wish you all the best. Remember, before we came into each other’s lives, we had goals for ourselves. My mind would go back to the one thing you told me: “Focus.” I would tell you the same thing.

I’m just here, and I’ll still be here.

He points out all the products lined up on his bathroom sink. Pointing it back at him, he blushes, “There’s another routine I do; I make sure to do it everyday - I do this more religiously than washing my face.”

Using one hand, he pushes his boxers off and the camera catches a glimpse of his limp cock. “I wash my dick.”
