Yes exactly this. True change will never occur under capitalism for one simple fact. It will never be profitable to help people. That's what profit is for. That's its use. We use profit to help people. It costs money, and so long as the ruling class hoards it, we can never invest it into making society better. Capitalism is the death of society. As someone who has done like, so many drugs, it's accurate. That's exactly how it is. You get the power up, and the side effects, which you can cancel with other drugs in the short term. You don't have to take them. You can stop any time.

But will you? It helps. When you struggle to get out of bed in the morning, drugs can help you get over that hill. You learn to ration them for when you need them most, portioning them. The addiction? Passing those skill checks you couldn't otherwise. Feels damn good, and you get addicted to that power most of all. Chemical addiction sucks, but it's nothing on being able to do things you couldn't otherwise, and then trying to give it up.

in Disco Elysium I was expecting there to be some kind of “addiction mechanic” that would add a long-term downside to taking drugs, and was surprised not only by the absence of any such mechanic but also that the benefits of drugs greatly outweighed the cost. anyways fast forward to the late game and I was downing three bottles of pyrholidon and smoking an entire pack of cigarettes before attempting any check, and it was only then I realized there was in fact an addiction mechanic

This attitude used to be the norm and we really need to get back to that. We aren't a board of executives trying to make and maximize profitable content. Our only job is to enjoy the thing as much as we can enjoy it. That's it.

I feel like too often in the phandom we downplay the show or are like "yes it had a lot of issues but you can still enjoy it despite that" or "you dont even need to watch the show, the fanon is a million times better" and can I be real?? I hate when we do that. I like the show and I think its a Good Show. I would not be here if I thought the show was bad. I would not recommend other people watch it if I thought it was bad.

The most I'll warn people is that the show can be a bit dated in some of its writing choices but like thats it. Otherwise the show is goofy and corny and thats what makes it good.
