Esau 'Mark' Kessler

loving kind-hearted easy going gentle-spirited uber-talented creative tenacious devastatingly handsome dear friend father fiancé

At 6:50 am, Sunday, December 14th, our dear friend Easu Lafcadio 'Mark' Kessler lost his battle with esophageal cancer and went home to be with his Savior.

Mark was diagnosed this spring when he began struggling with eating and keeping food down which resulted in excessive weight loss. With his fiance, Dana, and other dear friends and family by his side, Mark spent several months in a blur of treatments, biopsies, scans and operations. As a self-employed graphic designer, he had less than ideal health insurance and eventually reached the point where he was unable to work at all.

Thanks to the generosity of so many, this site has been instrumental in helping ease the financial burdens Mark faced this year. The needs now center around funeral costs and other related expenses. Please continue to share this site and thank you again for your compassion and willingness to give.

As always, prayers for Dana, Mark's children and family and all those who have loved him best are greatly appreciated.

30TH ANNUAL QUIKSILVER IN MEMORY OF EDDIE AIKAU INVITEES ANNOUNCED

This winter, big wave riding celebrates a special milestone with the 30th annual Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau at Waimea Bay, on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. Quiksilver is pleased to announce the list of official 2014/15 Invitees and Alternates on this very special occasion.

The event honors Hawaiian hero Eddie Aikau, whose legacy is the respect he held for the ocean; his concern for the safety of all who entered it on his watch; and the way with which he rode Waimea Bay on its most giant and memorable days.

The competition has only been held a total of 8 times: it’s inaugural year at Sunset Beach, and then seven more times at its permanent home of Waimea Bay. The Eddie was last held on December 9, 2009, won by California’s Greg Long.*

Highest energies ever recorded in Berkeley Lab’s new “tabletop” compact particle accelerator 

By Kate Greene - Using one of the most powerful lasers in the world, researchers have accelerated subatomic particles to the highest energies ever recorded from a compact accelerator. The team, from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (Berkeley Lab), used a specialized petawatt laser and a charged-particle gas called plasma to get the particles up to speed. The setup is known as a laser-plasma accelerator, an emerging class of particle accelerators that physicists believe can shrink traditional, miles-long accelerators to machines that can fit on a table.
