Bird #59 - Happy Year of The Snake! Great Blue Heron (LC)

This is a bird blog but I'm a big fan of snakes too hehe. And photos of herons wrangling a snake are all gorgeous.

Usual bird facts: Great blue herons usually make bulky nests on trees, but if there aren't suitable trees around they will occupy anything from cacti (ouch) to beaver mounds to just settling on the ground.

And also happy birthday to this blog! We've come so far since Jan 1st 2024 :] Here's to many a bird this year as well!

Spotted garden eels spend most of their life half-buried in the sand! They make mucus-lined burrows with their tails, which allow them to withdraw into the sand when threatened.

These little eels even feed from the comfort of their burrows - the passing currents bring em' all the zooplankton they need!
